Partner's AI generated woman - silly fun or ick weird?

I've had already had some issues with my partner so this is probably extra icing on the cake. We've been dating 18 months.

Today, I was on Facebook and my partner appeared as one of my suggestions. I clicked on his profile. There were a handful of photos. One in January this year was him with a beautiful woman; the other in Feb with the same beautiful woman. I was taken aback because in one of the photos he looked younger than he does now, so I assumed it was a photo of an ex. A few people had 'liked' the photos.

Now, in Jan and Feb this year, we were on a break because of his various mood issues and I had a lot of stuff going on so we weren't officially dating at the time he posted those images.

This afternoon, I sent him a text asking why he had posted the photos this year of him with the woman. It wasn't an angry text, I wanted to know why he was suddenly posting photos of himself with his ex. He replied to say it was an AI generated image from an app where people submit a photo of themselves and then AI generates a partner that would suit them. He said he was bored and just being silly.

I believe that. I find it weird a man in his fifties would do that and then share it on Facebook. Should I laugh it off? Am I overthinking it?

Was he trying to deceive his FB friends into thinking the woman was real, or just mucking about with an AI image tool? Lots of people do the latter, for various effects.

That I don't know. He said he was just messing around with the app because he saw it online and he was bored. I can't see his posts or any captions on the photos so I don't know if he was purposely misleading people. And if so, I don't know if he was doing that because he wanted them to think that's his partner so he looks good or if he thought other people would realise it was just him mucking around.

You were on a break, so he can do what he wants I suppose. Though posting a pic with a fake woman is really weird. He is obviously trying to fool people into thinking that's his real partner. I mean its one thing to do it fun for privately but quite cringey and immature to post it, without even acknowledging it in the caption. He seems quite shallow. How is he in other aspects of your relationship?

He's kind, he's supportive, he's easy to talk to, he tries his best most of the time. He can be immature at times, he can be self-pitying and sulky. But then I've got a load of flaws too so I don't know if his are problematic enough to leave the relationship.

So you have never been FB friends? Sounds like he may have been acting like a 12 yo one night

I don't use FB regularly - only occasionally if I need to find out info about something locally. I don't post on my page and am not connected to people via FB. His profile just came up in suggested when I logged in.

Lol i was watching AI partners / companions on youtube today, its not just men that do it women aswell.
I think its odd its not an ick to me its just odd.
Some really think they have a real full on partner.

Hiredgun · 19/08/2026 18:49

It’s a bit weird but what takes it to another level is sharing it online in the hopes people will think he’s pulled a hot babe! And he’s a middle aged bloke too. Get out of here.

LizandDerekGoals · 19/08/2026 18:52

The words you used to describe him in this very short thread are:
sensitive to any criticism or anything that might feel like rejection,
moody,
snappy,
Immature,
self-pitying, and
sulky.

Just leaving this here…

cantthinkofagoodusername2026 · 19/08/2026 19:12

Disrespectful to you, and just plain embarrassing for him, a grown man, to be behaving like this. Just downright weird.

pineapplecrushed · 19/08/2026 19:18

Going against the grain here - facebook has a lot of those posts - 'see what you would look like as a woman!' type thing. If it was just one of those then it wouldn't necessarily bother me.

MyLimeGuide · 19/08/2026 19:18

He sounds dreadful.

VeryQuaintIrene · 19/08/2026 19:18

ick weird, obvs.

Pedallleur · 19/08/2026 19:21

In his 50s? Old enough to know better.

Tuesdayschild50 · 19/08/2026 21:20

Its embarrassing from a 50 yr old man why post it for likes .. ffs

NotAnotherScarf · 19/08/2026 21:39

Run like the wind.... seriously fuck odd. I'm a man in my 50s, my friends are in their 50s and if one of us started posting pictures with imaginary women we'd be contacting the guys in white suits... that's just weird. The sort of thing you do when your 15

Ileithyia · 19/08/2026 21:45

Run away. Don’t look back.

mondaytosunday · 19/08/2026 22:13

I agree with @Hiredgun- and can see someone doing this (doesn’t have to be an app ChatGPT will come up with someone) but to then post it? That’s the bit that’s troublesome. I think it’s time you moved on

mishmashmess · 19/08/2026 22:22

Just reminds me of that thread a while back about the most hilarious / cringe things people's ex had done. After being dumped, one posted a pic of himself with his 'new girlfriend' on Facebook. It was a picture of Jennifer Lopez 😂

OtterlyAstounding · 19/08/2026 22:24

Ick weird 🚩

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 20/08/2026 03:40

Vomit

mashpatooties · 20/08/2026 03:51

Jesus. Have you met his blow up girlfriend yet?

JustMyView13 · 20/08/2026 06:44

You have to ask yourself, if this is how things are 18 months in, how do you think things will be in 18 years time?
You’ve had a break, he’s using AI to fantasise about partners, he has ‘ various mood issues’.

You’ve not painted him as a catch.

There are these Facebook games where it turns you into a Viking or vampire, or from the 80s, or says what year you’ll get married or what your kids with a celebrity will look like. They are designed to post the results so your friends play too and I’ve done it a couple of times and not noticed the results would be posted. I didn’t want the results posted, but I didn’t go back and delete it either. Perhaps it was just that?

It could be. I can't see any captions or his posts so maybe that would have explained it. I don't know that he was really trying to trick people. He might not have taken it seriously and expected nobody else to do it. It might be it automatically got posted.... but I still feel it was a weird thing to do because it looked very real.
By itself it wouldn't bother me so much but I think combined with other issues, it is off putting.

I suppose also I'm thinking everyone has flaws and which are acceptable ones and which aren't? I'm in my forties and the men I've dated in the last few years have been immature or lazy or selfish or untrustworthy or all of the above.
