Partner's AI generated woman - silly fun or ick weird?

Biscuitlady1 · Yesterday 23:58

I've had already had some issues with my partner so this is probably extra icing on the cake. We've been dating 18 months.

Today, I was on Facebook and my partner appeared as one of my suggestions. I clicked on his profile. There were a handful of photos. One in January this year was him with a beautiful woman; the other in Feb with the same beautiful woman. I was taken aback because in one of the photos he looked younger than he does now, so I assumed it was a photo of an ex. A few people had 'liked' the photos.

Now, in Jan and Feb this year, we were on a break because of his various mood issues and I had a lot of stuff going on so we weren't officially dating at the time he posted those images.

This afternoon, I sent him a text asking why he had posted the photos this year of him with the woman. It wasn't an angry text, I wanted to know why he was suddenly posting photos of himself with his ex. He replied to say it was an AI generated image from an app where people submit a photo of themselves and then AI generates a partner that would suit them. He said he was bored and just being silly.

I believe that. I find it weird a man in his fifties would do that and then share it on Facebook. Should I laugh it off? Am I overthinking it?

Surely the biggest ick here is using Facebook🤢

I mean it’s cringe and ick but how’s it disrespectful to the op, they weren’t even dating at the time.

Because presumably if this really beautiful woman, even if she is not real, is who he really sees himself as deserving and wants to be in a relationship with, then presumably he feels he is settling for OP.

Matronic6 · Today 07:45

I cringe whenever anyone posts filtered photos so an AI photo with a completely fictional person is another level for me. Massive ick.

Evaka · Today 07:49

Just couldn't be with someone so basic and weird.

BlackCat14 · Today 07:51

I also find it very weird that a man in his fifties would do that. It’s very cringe. He just wants all his Facebook pals to think he has a hot young girlfriend. And was maybe hoping you’d see it to upset you whilst you’re on your “break”?
I also think 18 months in, already had relationship breaks, doesn’t sound too great. Find someone better!

I once asked AI to generate a picture of me with a man dressed in medieval costume - it was for a joke, just something silly I wanted to email someone about 'my friend is rather old-fashioned'

I didn't request any particular appearance, but, my goodness the man it came up with was hot, hot, hot! I didn't save the image but it's seared on my brain with this high-cheekboned hottie smouldering away in some chainmail😃

houseonthehill · Today 08:01

Was he trying to deceive his FB friends into thinking the woman was real, or just mucking about with an AI image tool? Lots of people do the latter, for various effects.

maybethisyear · Today 08:05

I voted YABU because it looks like you are contemplating continuing this relationship
At 18m it shouldn’t be like this. Walk away

ErrolTheDragon · Today 08:20

among the reasons this is distasteful is the idea that this loser thinks a bunch of computer generated pixels is in any way a ‘woman’. It’d make me worried whether he sees women as real human beings or not.

allgoodhere783 · Today 09:44

I know someone who does this and is a very nice person just for some silly fun. I would be more worried about the other stuff, like the mood swings.

Edit: it DOES say something about what they think of the opposite sex though.

I don't meant to be unkind but why or why are perfectly intelligent women, as you clearly are, questioning them selves and the most basic logic? Why are women always thinking that it could be them even when it's a non brainer? I never come to MN to say this, but leave the bastard (for god's sake). What an idiot he is.

Why?

GottaBeStrong · Today 10:25

What are his mood issues?

I think you probably should have stayed broken up.

I wouldn't feel comfortable being with someone who used AI for this purpose and then wasn't open about it when posting - I agree with PP that it seems as if he was trying to present this woman as someone he was actually with.

Disturbia81 · Today 10:32

Pathetic, weird and very ick.

Usefuladvice · Today 10:37

18 months with a break in between, throw this one back OP!

HaperVouge · Today 10:51

God this is the biggest ick I’ve ever read. Imagine all his Facebook friends laughing and cringing because they would clearly know she’s not his partner or even a real person. Makes me cringe so bad

Aluna · Today 10:59

It’s both tragic and ick.

DerangedBillionaire · Today 11:07

This wouldn't be an issue for me as I would have died instantly from second hand cringe the second he explained that he'd publicly posted fake AI photos of a pretend GF.

I would have turned inside out.
OR maybe died laughing.

Mood issues, pretend friends... Is he really better than just being solo OP? Does he make you really happy and is he a positive influence, bringing good things into your one precious life?

Activelife · Today 11:09

On a break no such thing, you are either together or not.

momager22 · Today 11:10

Honestly posting that sort of thing on Facebook is just beyond pathetic and I’d be seriously questioning his intelligence. Massive ick. Get rid.

SunCloudRain · Today 11:18

In terms of that app it sounds like a laugh to see what AI thinks your ideal partner would look like. Then I can imagine sharing those with friends who were also doing it.

So if his posts were in that vein I'd be fine with it, but if he's using AI to generate artifical images with the intention of misleading people then he's grim.
