to not thank our cleaner?

Our cleaner comes once a fortnight. She's OK - not amazing but saves the rows in our house about cleaning so worth it!

She posts on social media a lot - I've no objections to this at all, but I've noticed that her other clients seem to thank her via socials every time she does their house. They like all the photos, share them and say how grateful they are etc. I've never done this!

I found her via a friend, our mutual friend dropped my keys off and I pay her online. I've never met her - think my husband might have crossed paths once or twice if he's popped home when she's been here.

I like the anonymous relationship - I'm busy and think of the whole thing as just transactional. I was chatting about this with a friend who thinks i should thank her every time!

You pay her you don't need to thank her constantly. The other clients are weird.

Grandmistress991 · 16/08/2026 11:51

If it is on socials it might be because she is advertising her business to get or maintain clients. Alternatively she may have a different ( closer, friendlier) relationship with them for whatever reason then its reasonable that you wouldnt do that if you only got her through a friend if a friend.

Also, some people, as sad as this sounds, might use it as a kind of boast that they've got a cleaner and want to put it on social media for all to see about how fancy and wonderful they must be to have a cleaner. 😆

Im assuming you thank her in person, which is good manners. If anyone provides you with a service, paid or not, its just nice to say thank you.

Softcream · 16/08/2026 11:53

I thank my cleaner if I see her in person, I don't post on her social media though.

AnitaCam · 16/08/2026 11:54

The thanking posts are probably fake.

Lucyccfc68 · 16/08/2026 11:54

I have a cleaner and I say thank you as she leaves. If I don’t see her when she leaves, I send her a text to say thank you and confirm I have sent her payment.

I specifically asked her not to put any photos of my house on social media. This means I don’t have to publicly thank her and no one else knows I have a cleaner.

Morepositivemum · 16/08/2026 11:55

That’s her way to be seen so she can get more clients. You don’t have to as long as you say thank you in person!!

HelpMeGetThrough · 16/08/2026 11:56

Your “thank you” to her is paying her, nothing else is needed.

NorthEastNancy · 16/08/2026 11:59

I don't thank her in person either 🙈 I've literally never met her. I send a double wage and thank her at Christmas but that's it - i think I've maybe been a bit lax!

Does she put pics of your house on SM? I would find that intrusive.

7238SM · 16/08/2026 12:02

I'm confused I've never met her You've never met your cleaner? Didn't you or DH show her around, show her what to clean etc?

What is she putting on social media and what photos? Of people's cleaned houses? That's just odd.

She does - I'm not too bothered by that though

No - literally never met her. She was recommended by a friend who passed on my keys. She sent over her insurance documents etc and I pay online.

I just said "clean as if you live in the house" and I knew from her previous posts what she covers in a general clean.

NorthEastNancy I think double wage and a thank you at Christmas is fine! If I cleaned ,I would rather have a bumper payday once a year than thank yous all the time!

WHAT! I wouldn't allow this at all! Are there every family photos on view? Even so, there is no way I'd want internal pics of my house, electronics, TV's etc to be viewed online by anyone!!!

NuffSaidSam · 16/08/2026 12:20

You should thank her if you see her in person or if you have cause to message her. I wouldn't get involved with the social media aspect though.

And I cannot believe you don't mind her posting your house on social media!! That is insane to me!

SpottyDeckchair · 16/08/2026 12:21

The thank you business is ridiculous - surely noone has time for that sort of stuff?

But what is not clear is, is she posting pictures of your house online? That would be a huge invasion of privacy and overstepping of what is acceptable.

Twoweeksinaugust · 16/08/2026 12:21

I imagine the huns are out in force.
I pay my cleaner cash so leave her an envelope that I write thank you on. I sometimes leave her a box of chocolates or something. I'm not even friends with her on SM so I'm certainly not thanking her on there.

I think you’re good allowing this so you’re already letting her use her home pics to advertise- you don’t need to get involved gushing too. The pics can speak for themselves.

I have friends who will do a thank you post for everything. So if they put a ladies day pic on for example, they’ll thank the women who did their hair, nails, lashes, the shop they bought their dress and shoes from etc. They’re copying celebrities who do it and don’t seem to realise the celebs are doing it as part of a deal where they’re getting paid/ getting freebies in exchange for advertising.

rubyslippers · 16/08/2026 12:22

So someone you’ve never met has keys to your house, and posts pictures of it on social media
and you’re worried that you’re not thanking her 🤯🥴

Fransgran · 16/08/2026 12:26

I thank mine when I see them and do the double wage thing at Christmas. I haven't a clue if they have a social media presence but would be very displeased if anyone posted photos of my house, pre-cleansing or after.

The only thing I would add is that if she’s a good cleaner, good cleaners are very hard to come by and it’s worth putting in the effort to keep her. You don’t want her throwing you over for a better offer.

You might be aware of the Saki observation: “The cook was a good cook, as cooks go; and as cooks go, she went.”

If she’s good, you want to make sure to keep her.

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 12:27

I thank my cleaner because she does an amazing job and does the things I can't really do myself anymore. I see her in person twice a week. I bring her Belgian chocolates back from holiday. Give her a Xmas and birthday bonus. If you have a good cleaner treat them nice or they might leave and you might not get such a good replacement.

Starrylawn · 16/08/2026 12:27

What! She posts pictures of your house online? That is appalling.

Softcream · 16/08/2026 12:32

She should at least have asked your permission before posting photos of your house online. Fine if you're not bothered but she really should have asked.

Grandmistress991 · 16/08/2026 12:53

Cant believe there are people who think just paying someone is a 'th@ank you'.
