AIBU to object to my neighbour's Christmas decorations still up in August?

AIBU to think that my neighbour should not still have Christmas decorations up (it's August at time of writing)?

My neighbour does not only have a Christmas tree up, but also has a MASSIVE projector, projecting large snowman onto their house 24/7. In my opinion, it is utterly absurd to still have these up. There are also green and red fairy lights flashing on the strobe effect all day every day.

I don't even know what action to take. This started in December 2025.

Advice needed.

No point in taking it down now, only 132 days till Christmas!

somanychristmaslights · 15/08/2026 20:26

Is your neighbour alive??

Morepositivemum · 15/08/2026 20:27

Crap, I agree with both of the above. Are they ok in there?

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 15/08/2026 20:27

What you want is a massive eye rolling face projected onto your own house. Possibly with 'Fuck Christmas' written underneath it. 😂

That's a good point. It might be worth checking.

Incredulousaboutlife · 15/08/2026 20:28

If the flashing lights are causing you a problem you should complain to the Environmental Health Department of your council.

Fuck me.

How long did you think it was going to take you to finish writing and hit post? 😂

I still have my plastic pumpkins up from last year’s Halloween… I find them some nice deco, no longer relate them to Halloween. They’ve been given some odd looks but I don’t care 🤷‍♀️

Stompythedinosaur · 15/08/2026 20:33

Perhaps those are their summer decorations now?

Maybe ask for the flashing lights to be turning off, but beyond that I don't think it's any of your business, it isn't harming you.

Better Christmas decorations than a flag up a lamppost or a poster for Reform.

Is your neighbour alive??

Valid question. I had a friend who died in her house all alone. This was during Covid so not much mixing of people and she was an alcoholic so communication was sometimes sporadic. Her neighbours called the police after realising her Christmas decorations were still up in March. She was estranged from her family and recently lost her job. It will always be on my mind.

2026letsgo · 15/08/2026 20:33

I was just going to post you should go with a Halloween frontage. But actually that’s only 10 weeks away.
Go full Easter. A big bunny. Nests with shiny eggs in, bunting etc.
Make a feature of your “street of stupidly “

Changeisstillpossible · 15/08/2026 20:35

@lisaloo88 that's so sad

Nousernameideaaga · 15/08/2026 20:36

That would annoy me so much.

But maybe there is a reason.

I worked with a little girl who was terminally ill and she wanted a birthday every day for as long as she had left. I knew her for two months 😢

So whenever I see stuff like that, I do always wonder if there is a reason

Maybe the reason is they are nut jobs or lazy

Or maybe it’s something else 🤷🏻‍♀️

Only your opinion clearly not theirs! and thankfully it's not up to you how other people decorate their house and garden.

DoAWheelie · 15/08/2026 20:50

I still have my Xmas decorations up from Xmas 2023. My dad put them up for me. The day he was due to visit to help take them down his housemate found him dead in bed. I haven't been able to bring myself to take them down since then.

Try not to judge people, you never know what's going on in their lives. They may have a reason for wanting them up that you just don't know about.

Haha, it's in case somebody stumbles across this post at a reasonable time to have Christmas decorations up

Is your neighbour alive??

Many people have been genuinely wondering about this, so I thought I'd say:

This neighbour is definitely alive

We still have our tree up. It was new last Christmas and has multi-programme combinations and colours, so for now we have the soft white lights on sometimes. We have limited storage space, so decided to remove the decorations but keep the tree itself.

grumpygrape · 15/08/2026 21:01

Have you had a chat and asked why ? Maybe suggested, depending on the reason, the decorations would have more impact if they were switched off for a while and then resurrected in December. Or, if you aren't on good terms you could just mind your own business 🤗

NC9000 · 15/08/2026 21:04

Are we seriously the DECORATION narcs now? FFS. Does this shit never end? I think we're safer in Korea!

flapjackfairy · 15/08/2026 21:12

I would love it ! Every year I say I am leaving the tree up.all year but as it is in a big bay window on a main road I.keep chickening out!

Is your neighbour alive??

This was my first thought.

Are they very rich? Their electric bill must be mental.

Daisy12Maisie · 15/08/2026 21:20

I hate putting up Christmas decorations so much. It is my worst job of the year. This is because:
I hate tat and mess
I hate having to go in the loft.
they are rubbish decorations and I never have the money to replace them.
It’s an extra job at an already busy and stressful time of year.

If someone offered to help me I would be over the moon. So maybe after this Christmas you could offer to help them take them down and put them up the following year? They may still be up as the neighbour can’t face taking them down and having to put them back up.

Every year I consider not putting them up but I feel guilty for my adult children who visit so put them up but I really hate it.
