AIBU to object to my neighbour's Christmas decorations still up in August?

AIBU to think that my neighbour should not still have Christmas decorations up (it's August at time of writing)?

My neighbour does not only have a Christmas tree up, but also has a MASSIVE projector, projecting large snowman onto their house 24/7. In my opinion, it is utterly absurd to still have these up. There are also green and red fairy lights flashing on the strobe effect all day every day.

I don't even know what action to take. This started in December 2025.

Advice needed.

You didn’t think about complaining until halfway through August? Were you not bothered from February to July?

lordbaddingham · 15/08/2026 21:26

This is bonkers! They've been projecting a snowman for seven months and nobody has mentioned it?

I hate putting up Christmas decorations so much. It is my worst job of the year. This is because:
I hate tat and mess
I hate having to go in the loft.
they are rubbish decorations and I never have the money to replace them.
It’s an extra job at an already busy and stressful time of year.

If someone offered to help me I would be over the moon. So maybe after this Christmas you could offer to help them take them down and put them up the following year? They may still be up as the neighbour can’t face taking them down and having to put them back up.

Every year I consider not putting them up but I feel guilty for my adult children who visit so put them up but I really hate it.

It's a light projector

No point in taking it down now, only 132 days till Christmas!

Valid point 😂

Morepositivemum · 15/08/2026 21:58

Ok, they’re still alive - maybe you just have to grin and bear it.

TON618 · 16/08/2026 18:53

They might as well stay up now

Shinyhappyapple · 16/08/2026 19:16

Maybe they are just really early for next (this) year ? I’ve heard some shops have some Christmas stock in already.

Are we seriously the DECORATION narcs now? FFS. Does this shit never end? I think we're safer in Korea!

I don’t understand your post. What do you mean ?

MargaretThursday · 16/08/2026 19:38

I think that's a wonderful idea. There's so much to do in December I always find it hard to make time.
I think I'll put mine up next weekend.

I still have my Xmas decorations up from Xmas 2023. My dad put them up for me. The day he was due to visit to help take them down his housemate found him dead in bed. I haven't been able to bring myself to take them down since then.

Try not to judge people, you never know what's going on in their lives. They may have a reason for wanting them up that you just don't know about.

I am so sorry.

Valid question. I had a friend who died in her house all alone. This was during Covid so not much mixing of people and she was an alcoholic so communication was sometimes sporadic. Her neighbours called the police after realising her Christmas decorations were still up in March. She was estranged from her family and recently lost her job. It will always be on my mind.

How awful. Poor woman.

I wondered too. However I lived in Korea for a couple of years and it was very safe, probably the safest place I’ve lived, so factually it is correct!

Oh I’m really sorry to hear this ☹️.

Sometimes the ‘sporadic communication’ is the only way people can cope, but it looks like a terrible combination of the job and Covid etc.

So many people living within communities but completely set apart from them unfortunately.

That would annoy me so much.

But maybe there is a reason.

I worked with a little girl who was terminally ill and she wanted a birthday every day for as long as she had left. I knew her for two months 😢

So whenever I see stuff like that, I do always wonder if there is a reason

Maybe the reason is they are nut jobs or lazy

Or maybe it’s something else 🤷🏻‍♀️

This.

One of my employees did something very similar. His wife was Christmas obsessed. She was given x months to live, and they had a tree up the whole time and Christmas dinner every Sunday.

Leaving decs up all year round is lazy. Actively switching them on every night in August suggests something bigger could be going on.

Lararoft · 16/08/2026 21:35

I was in Sainsbury earlier & saw some jute bags for life for sale at the checkouts with actual Christmas scenes on the front - like wtf it’s August and it’s over 30c are you for real Sainsbury??

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 16/08/2026 21:39

It must free up lots of storage room in their loft.

#goals.

worldshottestmom · 16/08/2026 21:41

The tree, while mildly infuriating, is their business. The projector??? No no no. That would have been mysteriously broken months ago.

I would have raised this with them in February tbh

My mum was in B&M on Friday and they were putting Christmas decorations out in place of the toys. Utter insanity. I love Christmas, but I love summer, too. We don't need Christmas in summer. This level immediate gratification isn't doing anybody any favours.

Many people have been genuinely wondering about this, so I thought I'd say:

This neighbour is definitely alive

How old is the neighbor? Could they be declining?
