AIBU to not understand why people dislike seeing feet?

Why do people hate looking at feet so much and against people wearing flipflops, sandles with shorts/dresses.

Yes I get not everyone has 'beautiful' feet (i surely do not - and I only show them off when its absolutely needed, spa, remove your shoes in the house kinda deal) but it's more about the constant 'you can't wear that in the office' 'I don't wanna see your bare feet' comments that fly all around mumsnet. I have never seen anyone ever say anything negative irl at people showing their feet.

I'm so curious as to what the 'gross' part is. We all have fingers and finger nails and palms which surely touch worse parts of everything in the world than our feet ever do - am I the weird one for not caring?

If you don't like something, don't look surely?

IABU - You should know why feet are gross (pls explain)
AINBU - Feet are feet and no different to any other part of the body

I have no issue with sandals, flip flops or even bare feet in appropriate places e.g. beach, pool, park etc. And I do not mind when my husband or guests remove their shoes inside but what really bothered me was when I worked in a shop and a man would come in regularly wearing no shoes. His feet were filthy and I personally could not fathom wanting to be barefoot on a floor that hundreds of potentially dirty shoes has been traipsing across all day.

MandemChickenShop · 14/08/2026 19:44

horrible malformed toes, crusty skin, manky toenails, corns, podgy pink trotters.

gross and disgusting. other than the beach and pool, socks should be worn at all times including with sandles, and proper socks, not those ick inducing ones that stop at the top of the shoes and pretend to be invisible.

mondaytosunday · 14/08/2026 19:51

I don’t either - your man in the shop @ToadRage is hardly the norm.
But I also don’t get needle phobia - I’m a type 1 diabetic and every once in awhile I get the ‘oh I couldn’t do that I have such a needle phobia’. Right. Choice is inject or die, so I’m sure you’ll get over your phobia pretty quick. (I know there are pumps but the vast majority of adults inject).

Createausername1970 · 14/08/2026 19:51

I wear open sandals whenever possible - but I keep my feet neat and tidy, deal with dry skin, have a pedi and my nails painted at the start of the summer.

Not everyone looks after their feet though, and I don't like seeing manky feet.

So it's easier for a company to have a dress code rather than police who can have feet on display and who can't.

Are you being serious here? Why on earth does anyone owe you a pair of aesthetically pleasing feet?!

SadiraOfTyr · 14/08/2026 19:54

I have no problem with wearing sandals. Yes, some people have less then perfect feet but so what? Are we going to say you can’t have bare shoulders unless you have perfect toned upper arms?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/08/2026 19:56

Feet don't bother me but I didn't really like seeing half of a woman's arse cheeks hanging out of her shorts .(and yes I know there's been loads of bum threads lately )

I really wanted to tell her "You can get shorts that cover you , not have more of your arse hanging out than in" but she'd probably have sworn at me .

she probably thought she looked nice .
Maybe "Pop into B&Q , they sell mirrors "

Well this is it isn't it. It's shit to make someone feel crap about something they cant control when all anyone needs to do is control their dislike and turn their head instead.

It's a them problem. But yet we get the 'i dont wanna see it' comments - why look then?

Oh she knew , she kept looking at herself in the shop windows for reflection.!

7238SM · 14/08/2026 20:00

My MIL lets her dogs lick between her toes whilst we are in full view of us 🤢

Its not just toes, I also dislike unkept or dirty finger nails. I have no issue with sandals or bare feet in general, but its the crusty, cracked heels with skin falling off, hammer toes, over lapping toes and unkempt nails I don't like seeing. Also, feet are far more likely to carry tinea. In many cultures feet are considered dirty because they touch the ground, so maybe its a subconscious thought for some people too?

Tell her that is (Excuse my French) FUCKING GROSS

the germs on a dogs tongue - they lick their own arses and genitals have NO Place on someones feet .

I'm a Podiatrist which over 30 years on the clock and this is the only thing that has ever made me physically vomit into my own mouth at work.

Dunno - grew up with a mother who absolutely hated feet, made all her kids wear socks constantly but doesn't have very nice feet herself and always walks around bare foot. It seems peoples judgements are off sometimes.

She used to many years ago use something like a cheese grater to get hard skin off, that was a bit grim to me but it took me a long time being an adult before I realised feet aren't gross - I was raised to think they was

Obviously at work I wouldn't use those exact words , more "Hmmm that's not really hygienic is it " Grin

malform toes and podgy trotters probably more difficult to manage but .....if only there was a way to sort out the rest ....Hmm

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/08/2026 20:15

I don’t love seeing hairy, hard-skinned feet with misshapen toes and badly kept nails in sandals I have to say. Decently kept feet don’t bother me at all.

OP I agree with you in theory that no one should be made to feel uncomfortable about an aspect of their appearance but poorly maintained feet are a bit revolting.

I wouldn’t kick off about it but I would wonder why someone would feel the need to bare their feet in public if they were in such bad nick. Closed toed sandals exist.

I mean, no one can control the shape of their toes though? Idk my best friend had a bunion and 2 of her toes over lap from years of wearing high heels (i think?) but she wears w/e she wants whenever she wants.
She gets pedicures and wears pretty peep toes, and flip flops. Feet are a part of her job so they are in good condition. But not perfect.

I'm not about to go give her a foot rub, I'm not that level of a foot person, but i also, notice and don't care I guess.

It seems a bit sad really but I am so interested in peoples opinions so thank you for the reply!

I don’t mind feet, most of us have them!
Mine aren’t great, just functional really.
I always notice beautiful feet, though…

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/08/2026 20:26

No that’s true. But they can either make sure their nails are short and clean and the feet aren’t covered in hardened skin. Or they can just put them out of sight?

I just sometimes feel people with really manky feet can be a bit exhibitionist about it. Its just not necessary for them to be visible.

Greenfinch7 · 14/08/2026 20:32

I don't know why people mind seeing feet- I like feet.

On the other hand, I find long fingernails extremely gross and creepy, especially when they have been covered in horrible nail polish (all nail polish is horrible to me). I keep my opinion to myself though...

But that's essential (for some every day, but all of us will need needles at some stage for tests/injections/medication).
Having feet out is not. Sandals aren't more comfortable than decent socks and certain types of shoes, and no sweat dropped anywhere/less rubbing. Plus aren't open shoes considered bad if you have diabetes?
OP, I believe you should wear what you want but, I'm with Gen Z on this-my feet aren't be out most of the time, fair enough for the beach etc. 1 in 10 people have a fungal infection/athlete's foot which they think is just dry skin, according to my podiatrist.
TBF a few cultures are against open toes, and wasn't there something about Princess Diana being criticised for it.

I don't really like them tbh, just don't like the way they look even when they're well kept, but with the summer we've been having I really have had to get over it.
