AIBU to not understand why people dislike seeing feet?

Why do people hate looking at feet so much and against people wearing flipflops, sandles with shorts/dresses.

Yes I get not everyone has 'beautiful' feet (i surely do not - and I only show them off when its absolutely needed, spa, remove your shoes in the house kinda deal) but it's more about the constant 'you can't wear that in the office' 'I don't wanna see your bare feet' comments that fly all around mumsnet. I have never seen anyone ever say anything negative irl at people showing their feet.

I'm so curious as to what the 'gross' part is. We all have fingers and finger nails and palms which surely touch worse parts of everything in the world than our feet ever do - am I the weird one for not caring?

If you don't like something, don't look surely?

IABU - You should know why feet are gross (pls explain)
AINBU - Feet are feet and no different to any other part of the body

Some people have manky faces. What are we going to do make them wear a mask? Make everyone wear masks incase someone has a manky face?!

Feet are gross but you just have to suck it up in hot weather.

I don’t really understand flip flops outside of the pool or beach. They aren’t particularly comfortable, and definitely aren’t work appropriate.

XenoBitch · 14/08/2026 22:19

I don't like feet. Never have. They look like weird elongated hands with stubby fingers to me.
I don't care if your skin is baby smooth, and you have spent ££ on a pedicure... I still hate them.

Gettingbysomehow · 14/08/2026 22:30

I obviously dont care what they look like because Im a podiatrist but I do think people should take better care of them because we need them to carry us for our whole life.

I mean, no one can control the shape of their toes though? Idk my best friend had a bunion and 2 of her toes over lap from years of wearing high heels (i think?) but she wears w/e she wants whenever she wants.
She gets pedicures and wears pretty peep toes, and flip flops. Feet are a part of her job so they are in good condition. But not perfect.

I'm not about to go give her a foot rub, I'm not that level of a foot person, but i also, notice and don't care I guess.

It seems a bit sad really but I am so interested in peoples opinions so thank you for the reply!

Feet are part of her job!?? The mid boggles

I cannot understand why people with fungal nail infections, long overgrown or dirty nails, and skin that is peeling cracking off, hard and often ingrained with dirt are not ashamed to have their feet on display.

Catza · 14/08/2026 22:34

I don't mind feet. Do I think beautifully kept feet are more aesthetically pleasing? Sure. But so are beautiful faces and I have never thought to tell anyone to cover their spotty/wrinkly face as it is "gross".
I am more baffled by teenagers and young adults who insist on wearing socks at the pool and the beach (saw people swimming in them too!). I would much rather see feet, however manky, than dirty white socks that they can't bring themselves to take off.
Do I keep my feet in decent shape? Not always. I am currently sitting here with chipped nail varnish and an eczema flare-up. Am I going to wear sandals tomorrow? You bet! Because my comfort is more important than strangers' offended sensibilities.

HeddaGarbled · 14/08/2026 22:38

The acceptable face (foot) of body-shaming.

tillyandmilly · 14/08/2026 22:44

My sisters both wear closed shoes trainers in the summer - they would never show their feet ! I wear sandals in the summer but i look after my feet - what makes me feel ill is people with dry cracked heels - no excuse buy a foot file or see a podiatrist and moisturise!

Fungal toenails
long toenails
claw like toes

urgh!!!

I have none of those things so will go on showing my feet.

NewNameW · 14/08/2026 23:04

I do agree flip flops aren't comfortable but I guess that's the same for high heels or trainers, the more you wear something the more comfortable it becomes or you get used to it.

I prefer sliders myself if I go to the beach but flip flops are more the norm I think.

That’s 2 AIBU threads about feet tonight, weird

Haven't seen the other thread but I wonder if we're both triggered by the same post

I don’t like actively dirty feet particularly, but the “ewwww” reaction to perfectly normal parts of the human body and the obsession with meeting beauty standards (obligatory manicures, no hairy toes, etc) is very unfeminist.

Ill wear what I like to the office and if you judge me for not having manicured toes, then … I won’t notice or care ;)

I have no problem with wearing sandals. Yes, some people have less then perfect feet but so what? Are we going to say you can’t have bare shoulders unless you have perfect toned upper arms?

Ideally yes. There are some absolute states walking about in this heatwave.

You think they don't already know?

Round here they are blissfully unaware (coastal area)
IMO women over 50 shouldn't have loads of wobbly white flesh hanging out of anything unless they are doing a promotion for Greenpeace.

Suck it up?
Did I really read that?
Fergie's revenge, it seems.

Oh bog off. Some of us have got important and useful things to spend our time and money on.

Feet are a feminist issue

How do you feel about men of the same age and body shape?

And what is the “promotion for Greenpeace” comment about?

Would you go to your dentist and say "Yeah , I really CBA buying a toothbrush , it goes against my feminist issues"
No of course you wouldn't

Cheap "Beached Whale/ Harpoon" dig I reckon.

But that's essential (for some every day, but all of us will need needles at some stage for tests/injections/medication).
Having feet out is not. Sandals aren't more comfortable than decent socks and certain types of shoes, and no sweat dropped anywhere/less rubbing. Plus aren't open shoes considered bad if you have diabetes?
OP, I believe you should wear what you want but, I'm with Gen Z on this-my feet aren't be out most of the time, fair enough for the beach etc. 1 in 10 people have a fungal infection/athlete's foot which they think is just dry skin, according to my podiatrist.
TBF a few cultures are against open toes, and wasn't there something about Princess Diana being criticised for it.

Fitflop sandals are the most comfortable shoes in the world. I haven't worn socks since about April.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 15/08/2026 01:41

At the other end of the spectrum, I had to change a profile photo of me where I was hugging my knees so you could see my bare feet, because I kept getting friend requests from weird men whose friends lists were full of photos of women’s feet!

See I think it’s a health issue. Cracked heels can easily split further and I’ve had one before that was incredibly painful then takes ages to heal. Same with toenails if you get hard skin down the side or ingrown ones
you need your feet every day!
i use a cheap urea foot cream every night before bed and it takes seconds to keep my skin on my feet healthy

OohOohOohWahAhh · 15/08/2026 02:55

If other peoples feet are randomly on display as I’m going about my day, I just don’t look. I had a childhood fear of shoe shops for some reason, the smell alone made me run out. Doesn’t bother me now.
My problem is my own feet. I hate them and I won’t go barefoot in my own house. I’ve loved DDs feet since she was born and she certainly hasn’t inherited my hang ups as I’ve never broadcasted them.

Do men wear sandals or other open shoes in the workplace? If they do they shoulf be equally told to stop

How is it a feminist issue? Or does anything ever effecting a woman need a feminist label slapped on it for added effect?

It doesn't only apply to the workplace though - it's the park, the beach, the pool, holidays, etc etc.

Men who wear flipflops, sliders, sandals or just bare feet aren't expected to have nail varnish, a pedicure, to moisturise their heels, or be hairless.
