Surely I’m not being unreasonable to think this BBC 1986 Forty Minutes programme is bloody marvellous?

Feeling nostalgic I stumbled upon this YouTube video entitled The Englishwoman’s Wardrobe from the 80s. Interviewing women from a lady who gets designer items from jumble sales (I miss them) for 20p to Selina Scott having the Emmanuels tailor a silk suit.

After having a pretty shit time recently it really cheered me up! Even Thatcher is interviewed in front of a rail of her outfits whilst telling the interviewer how she keeps her pussy bows stiff 😂

Loved this, thank you!

Never thought I’d be listening to Margaret Thatcher telling us her husband prefers her pretty clothes! The 19 year old looked like she belonged on the cover of a Culture Club album. Also laughing at the Bognor Regis glamorous granny competition and the bored kids sat on the floor eating crisps! I love any programme about fashion back in the day.

On my list, thank you. There a few 'Look at Life...' on TPTV worth viewing. I often find gems on BFI or YouTube and there's a few archive programmes on BBCi too, so worth checking.

Love watching the fashions of the day especially 60s for sharpness
70s for the wtaf factor .

Finally got round to watching. Thanks for the recommendation.

I think I could go down a very deep rabbit hole on the BBC Archive site Smile

Margaret thatcher came across as a really sensible lovely person , that surprised me . She's right about keeping your clothes stored properly and tailoring them .

Yes, I thought so too, definitely showed a different side to her!

Loved it. The glamorous grandma, the woman who wanted to be cuddly, Margaret Thatcher.

Loved the voices too, it feels like we’ve lost that.

I'm irish but I agree there used to be a certain rte TV accent too , it just doesn't exist anymore

I watched it thanks to this thread and found it so interesting. Nowadays a program on fashion would largely focus on young women but there hardly any in this!

Aiming4Optimistic · 17/08/2026 09:23

I went out yesterday and bought two early 80s inspired blouses yesterday, because of this programme - have decided I miss 80s fashion!

I’ve just checked my Next app and there is a fair isle cardi with a pie frill collar and I had a similar one in 1981. Very Diana.
However, I realised due to my menopause boobs I’d end up looking like Hattie Jacques in it.
It’s very pretty though.

Aiming4Optimistic · 17/08/2026 14:07

@PetulaGordenoI found 2 blouses with flat panels on the shoulders (kind of shoulder pad shaped but flat) and flowy sleeves. One has a polka dot pattern. Put me in kind of Princess Diana in her nursery teacher phase.

Thank you OP. Looking forward to a watch. I think the people on the style and beauty board would love this!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/08/2026 14:20

I do love BBC Archive and 40 minutes. Absolutely fascinating.

Thanks for posting this OP.
Really enjoyed the programme and have shared the link with a few friends.

I feel like I’ve started the equivalent of a 1980s chain letter now after sharing this 😂

I’m looking for other, similar, things to watch. There’s always lots of gritty, slightly depressing 80s stuff but I want more gentle and glamorous nostalgia!

Thanks for this - I've shared this with my wider family who watched it and loved it!

86 is about peak 80s as far as I'm concerned. Note how much more common short hair was for women at that point!

The Thatcher part is fascinating, my mum met Mrs T a few times, due to being a Tory party member, and always says she was surprisingly feminine in person, unlike the 'macho' persona that was often joked about.

As it happens my mum also met Selina Scott a few times as she was a regular at a weekend classical music event my parents attended every year in the 80s and 90s.

Bimblesalong · 18/08/2026 18:29

What a brilliant watch that was. I loved a good jumble back in the day.

Try BBC Archive 1983 a Package holiday in Benidorm if you haven’t already watched it! Not glamorous but definitely fun and nostalgic!

Mollymaid64 · 18/08/2026 20:44

I quite enjoyed the miners documentary in this 40 minutes series. It wasn't depressing. Showed the lads on a night out all dressed in white shirts, black ties and white socks. Aah, the nostalgia of my teenage years

Giftwithpurchase · 18/08/2026 21:12

I watched this a while back and loved it went on a similar rabbit hole and have devoured anything vaguely related on YouTube! Something about it made me very emotional. I feel like we’ve come so far with acceptance but also regressed at the same time. I often lean in to Maggies advice about only wearing an old tried and tested outfit for any occasion you’re remotely worried or uncertain about. Apparently she was really torn apart by the press for saying she bought her undies from M&S - at least we’ve move on a little from that level of sexism (have we?!)

TheKindnessProject · 20/08/2026 07:16

Many thanks OP!

ViciousCurrentBun · 20/08/2026 07:28

Thanks op, will watch later.

As an eighties teen it was all about mini crinis for me.

If it was smell-a-vision you'd have picked up Old Spice, Kouros and Brut 😁
