Surely I’m not being unreasonable to think this BBC 1986 Forty Minutes programme is bloody marvellous?

Feeling nostalgic I stumbled upon this YouTube video entitled The Englishwoman’s Wardrobe from the 80s. Interviewing women from a lady who gets designer items from jumble sales (I miss them) for 20p to Selina Scott having the Emmanuels tailor a silk suit.

After having a pretty shit time recently it really cheered me up! Even Thatcher is interviewed in front of a rail of her outfits whilst telling the interviewer how she keeps her pussy bows stiff 😂

Ohhh I love this. I’m only a few minutes in and the joy of the jumble sale has taken me right back.
The 1/2,2,5,10,20 and… 50p tables! The absolute towering heaps of clothes to rummage through! I think the closest thing today are the Kilo sales, which I love too.
I’d go with my mum and I’d be given 20p to spend however I liked. Such fun.

Oh, I saw this a few weeks ago! It randomly popped up on my YouTube. No idea why the algorithm thought that I might be looking for 1986 fashion! That’s when I was born!

On my list, thank you. There a few 'Look at Life...' on TPTV worth viewing. I often find gems on BFI or YouTube and there's a few archive programmes on BBCi too, so worth checking.

Gosh I’d forgotten they used to have to talk in that stilted la-di-da voice on BBC back in the day!

I saw this a while back and loved it. I found myself agreeing with Maggie Thatcher about something too. That's never happened 😂

The BBC Archive Channel on YouTube is full of gems like this and new stuff is added every week. I find that TV was so much calmer, more measured and easy to watch then. If you are a french speaker INA has a YouTube channel as well for a look at French TV back in the day.

I’m reading Jilly Cooper’s Riders at the moment. The Cotswold green welly lady and the glamorous writer who lived in a gorgeous manor house as well as the Ritz going bum cleavage woman could have all been from her books!

I was in my 20s in the 80s and don't recognise much of this at all!
I did wear a pin stripe suit and tie to work for a while though!

It astonishes me just how dated this appears, considering that it was the decade I was born. Things have changed a lot in a mere 40 years! Makes me feel old!

Did glamourous granny actually have any grandchildren? They said she was briefly married, but there was no mention of family. It was kind of sad that her whole life's focus was on her appearance.

I was in my 20's too and none of this resonates with me either. I was dressing somewhere between Madonna and Cyndi Lauper in 1986. Think short lacy skirts, cropped tops, hair in a banana comb and lots of bangles! I worked in a very informal, young environment at the time so I didn't dress very differently in work to be honest.

Apparently, according to the YouTube comments, the wonderfully creative Watford teenager ended up having a shop (maybe fashion related?) and always dressed unconventionally.

Reckon Lady Rothermere aka Bubbles was direct inspiration for her namesake in Little Britain?
