To not stick to the hosepipe ban

We’ve been told no more watering our plants or using the hosepipe from midnight tonight. However, since this announcement:

• A local business has confirmed their splash pad will be operational everyday this week from 8am to 8pm. How many millions of litres of water will that use?
• The local water park has also confirmed they will be open. Using more water and wasting more water.
• The local golf course has reassured members that they are able to keep watering the greens, so playing experiences won’t be compromised!
• Local parks will continue to be watered to “provide a green space for everyone”.
• Car washes etc in the local area are still allowed to operate.

I feel like it’s totally ridiculous that all that is allowed to happen, but I can’t use my hosepipe!

I am with you OP. Because:

• Water companies not fixing leaks wastes more water all year around than anything that could be saved through a hose pipe ban for a few days in the summer
• I am still waiting for a ban on bonuses for the overpaid crooks that currently run water companies and prison sentences for them polluting all our rivers and seas
• Water shortages are caused by the lack of investment in infrastructure. I live in England where rain pisses down on us for the majority of the year and water companies should be able to build reserves (if they were not so busy paying their shareholders and directors rather than building new reservoirs)
• it does not make sense for me to use a watering can to carry the same bloody amount of water that I use with my hosepipe as I only have a small garden and I am very careful to only consume the minimum required with my hose pipe to keep my fruit trees, plants and shrubs alive.

Basically I want to see all water companies re-nationalised. In the meantime I will ignore anything they request.

Lots of self righteous people on this thread who don't seem to grasp that the people they need to go after are the water companies, not some home owners putting water in their rose bushes and who prefer a hose pipe because they might have a bad back...

It has nothing to do with being self righteous, but posters remembering standpipes in 1976 who don't want to go back to that.

Using up what is currently a finite source won't make it magically appear if it doesn't rain.

We should hit the water companies, their crooked CEOs and greedy shareholders where it hurts most by not paying for a service we aren't getting.

If a water company wants these business to cease trading while there are shortages then said water company should pay the employees of these companies furlough.

Presumably a splash place uses the same water, treated with chlorine, like a swimming pool would?

Then why bother? I’ve no skin in the game as I’m in Scotland so a hosepipe ban is just a weird thing I hear about from down south. Why not just carry on as you are?

You've got plenty of time for moaning on the internet. Why not use some of that time to get some fresh air and exercise.

If it’s an accessibility issue then I believe you can apply for a disability exemption.

You don’t have to do it all at once.
And you don’t actually need to water all your plants.

Many are tolerant/hardy and can survive droughts. My tomatoes are thriving, I’m hardly watering them at all. The perennial geranium is huge, the hibiscus and roses are covered in flowers. Agapanthus, lavender, cosmos, verbena… all fine.

If your huge expensive garden doesn’t have any hardy plants in it then you haven’t planned it very efficiently and you will have to put the work in to help it survive a drought and a hosepipe ban.

They are businesses as others have pointed out - it is about prioritising the use of water during a potential shortage.

Also I do not think the fact that someone else breaks the rules is a reason for you not to comply. If a neighbour speeds/shoplifts, would you think that was a good reason for you too?

I have said this a few times, but the 'you lot using hosepipes to water your plants to keep them alive, instead of a watering can are soooooooooooo selfish' brigade seem to be deliberately ignoring me.

Basically, yeah, if you use a watering can, you're still using the same amount of water that you would if you used a hosepipe! DUH! It's pretty obvious.... But it takes 5 times longer, so like fuck am I doing that. I also have no hosepipe ban, so can use the hosepipe anyway, which is annoying the self righteous judgemental finger-waggers!

Hose pipe bans don’t apply to businesses, for obvious reasons, people rely on them to earn a living and pay their bills if that’s their employer.

I’m pretty sure you’d not say that if you or your partner worked for them and lost fheir job due to it.

If the area I live in moves to stage 3 drought, then an NEUB might be applied for, which would affect businesses.

I believe this has already happened in Hampshire.

I need to know as I live in Scotland so hosepipe bans aren’t a thing here. Is it all a bit Covid-y down there? Like, what stops people using a hose? Is it just the reliance on snooping neighbours clyping on you? What would happen if you were caught using a hosepipe? Who’s watching for this and what powers do they have?

It's a criminal offence to use one, penalty is a fine.

It's nothing like Covid, hosepipe bans have been a thing in hot dry summers in the SE since I was a child. Most people are sensible with their water usage when one comes in, some dgaf, as per this thread.

The next level restrictions are government issued powers, should they be required.
