To think that Cambridge University’s reputation has been shot to pieces by the revelations about ex-professor Jason Arday?

So - help me with this, the fact of the historic slave trade makes you feel so defensive that you feel the need to mention that black people were involved too. And other cultures/empires.

What’s the purpose of this?

Edited

What’s the slave trade got to do with this thread?
Or has AJ claimed to be related to Martin Luther King?
”I lived a dream!”

Slavery in classical antiquity, the dark ages and the early medieval period wasn't race based, though. You lost a war, you're a corpse or a slave - tough luck.
It's much later that the justification of alledged white superiority bobs up.
Not sure how this relates to JA?

Oh I thought you meant the band The The - worst name ever.

Good band though.

I thought the plagiarism claims were found to be not true? Off to google haven’t seen any updates!

Yes, it's being investigated but apparently his Doctorate is fairly achieved "nothing to see here" according to Liverpool John Moores University.

I think we should wait until things have been proven or disproven before making sweeping accusations. Trial by media is an ugly thing.

It's just deflection tactics when a situation makes them feel uncomfortable. Anything and everything will be thrown at it rather than face a reality. The bloke cheated and just happens to be a POC.

Really? Has anyone suggested that he hasn’t lied and isn’t black?

The whole black people took slaves too derail was from someone agreeing with you!
It's all a plot by museum curators, apparently ...

Not sure, someone was whining about decolonisation.

Not directly, no. Bizarre excuses have been proffered and irrelevant public figures have been thrown into the discussion.

I haven’t seen any excuses. And over-promotion men in general is of direct relevance to the discussion.

Quite. Who sold the African slaves to the Europeans? Other Africans. Not to mention Benin who were major slave traders. Apart from that... Egypt, Greece, the Romans, Portugal..all slavers.

So you could argue that they have their own legacy to reckon with. Just as we have ours. What is it you think you are going to lose by this process?

It's all woke innit!

Or that's the DM narrative at least. One minute you're pulling down statues and handwringing over slavery, the next - oops! - you've somehow let a black professor into Cambridge. Where will it all end?

Funny how your examples don't include anyone on the left. Not that I'm going to be dragged away further from the bottom line of this incident.

Gawd, the Daily Mail reference yet again.

I am not losing anything as my family were from a former colony in Ireland. I'd love to be a victim and get a job in Cambridge just on the basis of being a victim.

LarkspurBlues · Yesterday 22:05

Ex-academic here and the main thing I think is that there are so, so many white professors with completely fakes personas and lives, and stolen, spurious work with made up facts who are not being investigated but should be. Boy are they keeping quiet now though.

By the back door it turns out which makes sense doesn’t it as he wouldn’t have got in through the front.

Yes. Exactly.

Yes, I wasn't as keen personally on Dream Count as Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie's earlier novels but there are scenes which give an interesting insight into perceptions by some African-Americans that Nigeria don't acknowledge their own participation in the slave trade enough.

YourAmplePlumPoster · Yesterday 22:09

I think you will find that people who have migrated here and done well aren't prepared to slag off the country. But we're talking about the older generation who migrated here.

@LarkspurBlues maybe now they will be. Do you know anyone whose work is plagiarised? If so why wasn’t he/her reported for it?

Why? Why is this so tolerated? Very depressing.
