Unfortunately, I do not have:

  • 4 daughters under 12 who have dedicated their summer holidays to hourly competitions on who can scream the loudest (and associated rehearsals)
  • a super charged motorbike that gets started around 6.30 am, revved a few times then left to idle and splutter for 10 minutes before speeding off the estate
  • a partner who walks up and down the street at all hours talking endlessly on speaker phone using his outside voice
  • A dog that never gets walked and yaps constantly in the garden from 6am to 11pm
  • Teenage sons who have tons of mates that drop them home anywhere between 11pm and 4am and play a few tunes nice and loud with the windows down and always give between 5 and 25 pips of the horn to say bye

So please, tell me, how can I keep up with my neighbours? What should be my thing?

Move

ChickenBananaBanana · 30/07/2026 08:49

Giant speaker playing Balearic trance night and day?

shellyleppard · 30/07/2026 08:50

Move to a deserted island somewhere?? 😁😁 I live on a council estate and the sounds of summer for me are.... screaming kids/teenagers. Barking dogs, motorcycles racing along the pavements and someone, somewhere playing music very very loudly while singing along tunelssly.

AutisticMumOf2 · 30/07/2026 08:50

Take up learning the bagpies.

Take up learning the bagpies.

I'd go for this and practice badly and loudly in your garage, with the door open wide, at least four times a day!

Elieza · 30/07/2026 08:54

i think i live on the other side of those noisy bastards from you.

they have no consideration.

i also particularly “enjoy” the youths gaming upstairs with the windows fully open shouting swear words into the headphone’s microphone at full volume.

i “enjoyed” that A LOT during lockdown.

I want to move and am still looking but haven’t seen anything in my price range that i like as yet and still have stuff to fix here first.

Gardenisablooming · 30/07/2026 08:58

Early morning vacuuming.
Wind chimes .
Environmental health about the barking .
Horn beeping is illegal. Non emergency police report .
Radio in the garden. Turn it up when the screaming gets louder..
Turn it down when they go quiet.

Worled a treat training ndn to get his dog to stfu

senua · 30/07/2026 08:58

And aye-und-aye-und-aye will alllways lurve yooooooooooouuuuuu.

InterestedDad37 · 30/07/2026 09:00

Get a drumkit. Practice at night.
If you have children, get them home violin/recorder lessons, and encourage lots of garden practice.
Have a party or three. In the garden.

ComedyGuns · 30/07/2026 09:03

Oh wow - this sounds horrendous - I don’t know where to begin! How many children do they have in total? Do you own your home?

StayGoldenPonyGirl · 30/07/2026 09:03

It is a lovely estate in general but the audacity of a few really grates. We do also have the super loud shaggers but they haven't put on a performance lately so all might not be well at number 23.

Bagpipes a great shout- I don't currently have any but I do have an accordion that I am really bad at...

This multiple neighbours! I'm a terrible sleeper so it's the early morning stuff that really gets me- the rest is mostly noise you'd get anywhere but also noise I'd never make or let my kids make!

My heart literally goes out to you - I’m so sorry.

Join a steel band? Practice very seriously of course, but then invite the group round too

Laurmolonlabe · 30/07/2026 10:28

Either move or get up at 6am toi do the vacuuming and listen to loud music with the windows open- leave the music on or turn it back on whenever your neighbours kick off.

NotAnotherScarf · 30/07/2026 10:34

I have a similar problem with ibiza dance tacks for hours on end in the afternoon. Plus 2am the other day...my wife didn't want me to knock on that door.

So i plan to channel my inner Foul Ol' Ron and talk loudly to my self outside of the offending house "Spying on me. Loud music to send spy waves to the house. Bugger em. I fix that i knows people. I knows people I dos. No more rays in my house....I'd fix they. I've got a lazer"

It works. I recently had a young lady approach me in the pub, I'd popped in for a night cap and to use the loo on the way home she was clearly taking the piss out of the other customers so I calmly told her that none of this had happened yet and it was actually 1955 and I'd heard about a new type of music in America which will be here soon. At that point she quickly sat down.

Chinese opera at full volume.

I can definitely vouch for this. Went to see a show in China. That's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.☹️

Passaggressfedup · 30/07/2026 10:37

The most horrendous sound is someone starting on the saxophone. OMG!

YES!!!! Brilliant

worldshottestmom · 30/07/2026 17:27

Have you ever considered learning the trombone? I think you should start a brass band.

When my old nob head neighbours used to be pricks to me, I used to put on a '12 hour drilling' video on YouTube through speakers; positioning the speakers so that they were facing their wall, on full blast. Then I went out for the day. Once did this overnight when staying at my ex-partners. They soon stopped. 10/10 would recommend.

Projectprincesschaos · 30/07/2026 17:30

You need a project - ideally an outdoor one that included multiple deliveries, dust, people cutting across their driveway, and power tools oh also a deep based radio to song along to

Scotiasdarling · 30/07/2026 17:33

Vu vu zelas. (Sorry don't know how you spell that!)

I actually quite like Chinese opera.

Now Klingon opera on the other hand...

StayGoldenPonyGirl · 30/07/2026 17:55

Thank you for the suggestions!

Blasting the drilling noises reminds me of something funny that happened in my village growing up. One neighbour had annoyed another with a long DIY project, so for a bit of revenge, the other neighbour attached a big square of plywood to the adjoining wall and would just hammer nails into in for 15 mins here and there at times he knew it would annoy them. The other one did get irritated and did similar but with drilling screws in and out of a lump of wood. Was going on few weeks before they both told a mutual neighbour what they were up to at separate times and she broke the deadlock!

I can't do that - my next door neighbour is actually fine - it's just a few others and it's a new build estate with not much greenery so the noises really echo. Thank god the shaggers are having a dry spell.
