Why is it always workers who pay

We will all need to pay for social care.

You are reasonable because why should landlords pay for social care? Also why should people on big occupational pensions to pay more for social care? People tend to have bigger pensions because they’re either contributing a lot of their salary or they worked damn hard to get a good job.

The government needs to take a different approach to this because Scotland get this for free but England pay for it.

i think care homes are raking in something like £300 million a year Profit so the government should be thinking about setting Up council care homes and putting everyone where the government have got to pay for care in these rather than paying massive sums of money to private care homes who are just raking the money in. Most importantly these care homes where people are paying tens of thousands a month are paying those who actually hands in deliver the care absolutely pittances.

I think we all need to contribute to the cost of social care in a fair and proportionate manner.

I think a ten percent tax on all inheritances is fair and easy to implement. I’m sure landlords and occupational pensions will be taxed too

The majority of workers would be better off putting that money away themselves rather than it going in a socialised pot and getting the bare state minimum at the end of it. That way they get full choice of provider that suits them rather than a social care sector with the same failings the NHS has. I have earned little and a lot, so my relative income position is not the main driver about my value for money concerns, I have experienced other systems and I would say that the UK government could learn a lot from looking at at how other European nations manage their health and social care systems.

To be clear I'm not saying instead of workers I'm saying the tax should not only be on workers

I never had an issue with May’s “death tax” to pay for it. Didn’t really see what all the bloody fuss was about over it.

The majority haven’t paid enough tax for their state pension let alone healthcare & social care. Everyone needs to contribute.

I think that anyone who would prefer to enrich a margins -conscious small businessman to send his cash offshore than pay a tax is a lunatic.

Who has a “big occupational pension” in this day and age? The only people who have a lot in their pension are those who earn a lot and who already contribute a lot through paying higher income tax and not getting child benefit, tax-free childcare, personal tax allowance, top-up benefits etc. They will also most likely have assets so will have to fund their own social care when the time comes anyway.

Unpopular but we all need to be paying more tax.
Workplaces need decent pension schemes to take pressure of as people get older.

What occupational pensions are you talking about? Do you mean any pension someone contributed to through work? What about big pensions not contributed to through work?

What I seem as totally unreasonable is that people have to spend all of their savings on care - including selling their home. This has to be capped. My 97 yr old mother is looking at depleting all of her savings on the same level of care as someone who had no savings. I just wish they had gone on a dozen cruises in their 80s. The system does not encourage saving. I know what I would do if I lived in UK. Only problem would be do I choose MSC or Royal Caribbean!

Universal benefits need universal taxation.

£5k personal allowance. Merge income tax and NI, basic rate of 30%. That’s the kind of radical tax policy needed to fund health and social care to the level that the public expect.

I also don’t see why national insurance shouldn’t be levied on people over the state pension age, according to the same income levels as working age people.

As a pp says if you have a big occupational pension you've probably already paid a shed load of tax and will continue to do so when retired and will end up self-funding your care (and subsidising the council funded person next to you) anyway.

Neither did I but it nearly lost her the election when Corbyn dubbed it the dementia tax. Everyone wants someone else to pay for social care.
