Is my maths wrong? (Shop refund)

Big supermarket near me, closed off its changing rooms during COVID. Went in to buy something important that needs to fit correctly (swimming costume for a pool party booked the next day).

I asked a staff member near the clothing if the changing room was open any more, she confirmed no (I think they're now used as stock storage, you basically can't get beyond any barrier at the entrance). She advised of a 100 day refund policy and confirmed if was okay to buy a few, try them on that day, then refund (with all labels and hangers) the same day.

Bought a few costumes in different sizes (size 12, 14 and 2 different style 16s) along with my £20 ISH food shopping. Paid on a credit card and some vouchers I'd got (think something like clubcard voucher or Asda rewards, a specific £value). Total was £69.

Went back within thr hour (hurrah, 1 costume fitted) and attempted the return at customer service desk. 3 returns to process.

They were:
£9 costume on sale
£10
£20

I expect a £39 refund.

The customer service rep says it is a £39.43 refund that I'm entitled to, because I used a £1 voucher it influenced the refund value as it applies to the costume too.

I asked if the 57p will go back onto my loyalty voucher value, she said no.

What would you have done in that situation? What's a reasonable refund value?

A - be happy with £38.43
B - er, you returned £39 of goods so they need to make it right to £39 value even if it's on a gift card
C - £39.43 refund due back.

I won't drip feed, I'll share here that the customer service desk lady insisted on A. I insisted on B and asked to speak to a manager. Management was called who tried to give me a £38.43 credit card refund then give me a £1 gift card (which I explained was too much).

Shops often charge a "handling fee" and keep a few pounds, but it's made clear when you purchase the item. Your choice.

In Ireland this is normal. We have 'rounding' where cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5c.

It wasn’t a gift voucher paid with cash, it was a loyalty coupon which is stated in the context of the post.
What rules do you think exist for this? It’s not a law, of course the shop can set their own policy for dealing with money off coupons.

I got £18 off for spending over £120. The receipt showed a percentage was taken off each item rather than the total at the end. So you probably evened out anyway but I would have taken the gift card

Jesus I left £7 in unreturned change from M&S when I put in £20 to pay for something that was £13 and it didn’t give me any change back. It was lunchtime, I couldn’t hang around for long, the guy in the self service couldn’t fix it and he got a colleague who also couldn’t fathom how to give me my change so I just said forget it, I’m in a rush, and off I went,
I literally cannot believe that op is being so uppity about 57p. I’m not so rich that I wipe my arse with £50 notes but I don’t need to quibble about 57p and for that I’m truly thankful for the peace it brings.

I'm assuming you've made a typing error, because you seem to be getting a refund for more than you were due. If you used a voucher the EPOS would have divided that between all your purchases and taking off a percentage of the items you were returning. If you wanted £39 back, you should have bought the potential returns separately.

I'm surprised they let you return swim wear that you'd taken out of the store and tried on at home. That's quite gross. You can't do it with underwear so why is swim wear different.

Tesco would have done the same - spread the £1 voucher proportionally over each item, so they would have given you the £38.43 as well.

Moral: dont use discount vouchers when you might return stuff!

£38. 43 is correct and I would have accepted that because that's what you paid using the voucher. Which is really just a discount voucher, if you buy something using a discount voucher and then take that thing back you get back what you paid. You don't then get the discount voucher again to use against something else
