My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

absolutely batshit and so so so much of a red flag he hasn’t switched it off.

Bizarre 😳 I have 5 adult sons and it would not occur to me to track their location! Why does she need to know where he is all the time? He's an adult man! The fact that he is quite comfortable with this would worry me to be honest!

It's the same with all computer facilities, if it's available use it. That's what happens. It's insidious. I would question whether I wanted to meet anyone socially if lots of people, who weren't with us, could see where I am, who with, what I'm doing. This is surveillance and not for any good reason at all. We are meant to be a free nation. Potentially we are being spied on and recorded all the time: 1984 has arrived late.

In what kind of emergency can trackers be needed really?

Elderly parent with dementia who can go missing is one thing, but normal teenagers and adults?

When would a tracker be of any help?

TheSunnySwan · Yesterday 14:56

Run don't look back him and and his mum are strange

FlorenceLawrence · Yesterday 15:00

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I would just find this funny, not ick. Maybe I would find it irritating over time - I don't know. Part of me finds it sweet that he's tolerant of his over-anxious mum.

DD18 and I share our locations via Life360 - she suggested it because she worries about me! I'm now wondering whether we'll still have it when she's 31 ha ha.

However I would absolutely not let your own phone be tracked! Nip that in the bud right now.

Religious reasons (Christian denomination).

I was unmarried with no kids in my 30s. I wasn't living like a bloody teenager.

Which denomination? I can't think of any like that! Including the one I'm part of.

Hmm yes, this post reads very weirdly. You've noticed 4 or 5 times in the past week when you've been together a year? And the way it's written is very strange and unnatural.

And it makes zero sense why she would want your location.

Did you use AI by any chance?

His Mother sounds very controlling, but if he is ok with it you will have a problem changing their behaviour, it's long established and you will probably get push back from them both.

And it can be hacked, which is worrying. I don't like apps knowing my location either.

One time it helped me was when I was utterly lost in a city and my maps app kept crashing!

I shared location with DD and said "Where the fuck am I?! I need to get to XYZ!" and she sent me directions. Not an emergency as such but it was a lot quicker than other options!

But we only share localtion via Whatsup when needed, not all the time.

99bottlesofkombucha · Yesterday 15:06

When my kids get to that age I’d probably totally love to know where they are! But calling like that and checking in is totally bonkers. I’m hoping my kids grow up healthy independent adults so I expect the second time I tried that kind of stalking they’d turn off tracking. You need to say to him I understand she likes knowing where you are but she needs to not actively stalk you??. I’m really uncomfortable knowing if I’m out with you she will call to check on us because she’s watching where we are. I will not be sharing my location wiht you because of your mums stalking behaviour.

So you've been with him a year and this is the first time it's happened yet it seems to now be happening a lot?

This is a very good point.

What has changed in the last week for his mother to become such a presence in your life?

You've been unaware of the tracker for a year - was he not answering her calls in front of you, was she not making these calls whilst he was with you - something has changed. What?

coolcahuna · Yesterday 15:10

Wow. No not normal ! My 19 year old has just travelled around the world and turned off his location halfway. Tbh it was causing me anxiety looking at it !

Jollyhockeystickss · Yesterday 15:13

Your message doesnt make sense you say she tracks him 24/7 so why after a year have you only just noticed!

FairKoala · Yesterday 15:14

I think it is normal to have locations turned on but not normal to call everytime you see your adult children go somewhere different.

TheIdlerReturns · Yesterday 15:17

If this isn't a wind-up this sounds super creepy and controlling. Is his DM on her own and needs to live through her son? I wouldn't tolerate this OP, however nice DP is. If you continue you'll be going out with DM not him and need to account for yourself with every move by the sounds of it.

chillyputsomesockson · Yesterday 15:17

I don’t let my DH track my location never mind anyone else! I’m not going anywhere I shouldn’t be, I just don’t like the idea. I like to be able to be wherever I want to be without having to explain to anyone!
It’s be a no from me OP!
If he doesn’t mind his mum tracking him then that’s up to him. But at the point you live together he needs to have a conversation to say she can’t just turn up if she sees he’s home.

Yeah, I don’t believe the original post is real.
If the mum has always been tracking him, how can it have gone from nothing noticable to OP over the last year to suddenly the mum referencing it multiple times a day?

Also, the thing OP said about the mum suggesting that OP shares her location with partner (so the Mum can see if they’re both together) doesn’t make sense.

This is what I've been saying since the first page
I think it's a wind up

familyissues12345 · Yesterday 15:24

Ooh no, I wouldn’t like that! I have DS (22) on find my friends, look at it rarely, and would never dream of then questioning him about why he’s somewhere etc

FOJN · Yesterday 15:27

"I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”"

Actively tracking him and messaging him is really intrusive but the real problem here is that he's so passive because, "it makes her happy". You boyfriend has no boundaries with his mother and doesn't sound like he has any intention of introducing any.

Imagine he accompanied you to a hospital appointment, she'd be in the phone wanting to know all about it. It's not just his privacy being invaded, it's yours too whenever you are together. It would be a hard no from me.

Even if he turned the tracker off it seems like harmony in their relationship is contingent upon him doing what makes her happy, do you want a life where keeping her happy is his priority?
