This is quite normal in Europe. Also quite normal for chai in India. You just hold the top bit.

Are they not the double walled glasses? We have those and they never get that hot, get keep the drink nice and warm

I sent my coffee back and asked for a cup with handle, the barista was very put out.

They should have asked me if I wanted to burn my fingers before messing around with the pretty pattern on top, which disappeared when they slopped the coffee into a cup with a handle.

Unfortunately, due to silly c*s like Dave, nige, Boris and the like, we are no longer in Europe.

But that's beside the point. Customers have to be able to pick up a cup and drink without burning their fingers. In response to another poster, no they don't use double wall cups. If they did, it wouldn't be a problem, would it?

Well, we are still in Europe. Even those silly c*s can't move us geographically. But yes, coffee places never use the proper double-walled ones. I want a proper cup unless drinking Turkish tea, chai, or the like. I've been served breakfast tea in glass before. Just no.

I agree op, I'm no fan of juggling a hot drink and trying to drink it without burns even some takeaway cups are borderline.

When this last happened to me I asked for it in a cup. I'm sure they thought I was a silly middle aged woman but It was too hot to drink comfortably so I thought it was bullshit

I have encountered this in the UK (yet) but get very annoyed if given tea or coffee in a normal cup WITH NO SAUCER. Idiotic.

I always ask them to pour it into a cup if this happens to me. Most unenjoyable to burn your hands while sipping your coffee.

My DM refuses to ‘be a nuisance’ and recently sat with pursed lips and a napkin wrapped around her hot glass while I held my cup very happily.

If it’s too hot to hold it’s probably too hot to drink anyway. Unless you want to risk developing oesophageal cancer of course .

I hate dickhead wanky cups for coffee. The top heavy glass cups that are wide at the top and narrow at the bottom (and tall) are the ones I really hate because they tip over too easily. I always ask for a mug. One place didn’t have mugs so I asked for a cappuccino cup. If all else fails I’ll go for a takeaway cup and buy my next coffee elsewhere. Wanking wanky wankers.

Yes it’s an odd idea but common. I like my hot drinks really hot so have resorted to wrapping in a napkin if I can’t hold the top (which is awkward in a tall glass anyway).

I did this in my 20s - I'm 50 now! When I used to go out to coffee places - usually for work meetings and such - I would make a point of asking in advance. I've seen people drop hot coffee all over their laps in meetings and it's not good, especially if it's really fucking hot. Nobody will think you are silly. If they do, then they are very silly.

It's perfectly normal in Europe and in many other countries too. Either wait a little until it's cooled down or use a napkin to hold the cup to drink the first bit. Then you can just hold the rim as it cools very quickly once the liquid isn't touching the glass anymore.

I've become distinctly middle aged of late and ask for exactly what I want. I'm a tea drinker but I don't want 4 cups of tea in a metal teapot which dribbles and pisses over the table. I want one mug please and thank you.

Reminds me of that appalling fashion a few years ago for restaurants to serve meals on wooden boards.
I kid you not, DH once got served a roast with gravy on a wooden board. No lip. The gravy was dribbling over the edge onto the table.

Well no because you blow on it and sip from the top which is exposed to air and therefore cooler, and the liquid cools further in your mouth. Also the glass retains heat after the liquid inside has cooled.

The 2 times I've been given a cup with no handle it was probably to distract me from the fact that it was also tiny. Trendy, pompous shit

Yes, I can’t stand those either. The handle is always too low and the whole thing feels unbalanced. Plus they are horrible to drink from and the contents go cold too quickly. I have asked to change it before, usually leading to disgusted looks from the staff! But these days, when you can be paying well over £4 for a coffee, I won’t put up with it anymore!

Hotel Chocolat by any chance? They gave me a proper cup but my friend one of those daft glasses that she couldn't pick up. I went back and asked for a cup holder. We only got napkins but the girl said, 'oh yes, loads of people say that.' Get the cupholders then? Or just use cups.
I don't even like Hote Chocolat, they just had a new cafe my friend wanted to try!
