There’s a deadly virus - would you sacrifice yours or your child’s life to create a vaccine?

I’ve been watching a really good series and this scenario came up.

Theres a deadly virus, catching the virus means certain death as well as the extreme likelihood that you’ll infect large numbers of people before you die.

You find out that your child’s is immune and is the key to creating a vaccine, but in order to do so your child would die during the operation.

Humanity and civilisation as we once knew it is finished due to the amount of people who have died and the humans that are left are merely surviving and trying to avoid becoming infected. But some people have created small communities and are living the best lives they can.

Would you be willing to sacrifice your child’s life in order to create a vaccine? Or what about your own life?

So what if I believe the end of humanity might actually not be a bad thing?

That’s for you to decide. Not sure what it has to do with me?

I wouldn't sacrifice my kids. I'd sacrifice myself only if I knew that someone else (their father, aunties, my friends etc) would survive and be able to look after them.

If my kid was the one from the last of us, then yes. She is very annoying.

Depends which child and on which day 🤣

Given the drop in birth rates in many countries, more and more people are in fact fine with their DNA not continuing though.

The thread subject is “would you sacrifice YOUR child” ..so your point isn’t really relevant.

My own life? No brainer, absolutely.
My child? For my 12 year old I would ask him what he wanted to do and I would live with that choice, as much as I would want to say no.
My 8 year old? No way.

A 12 yesrw old?? Surely a kid cant consent?

Sunshineandgrapefruit · Yesterday 19:10

No. Appreciate this is hypothetical but kids are off limits and if that is what humanity has come to then it's no longer humanity.

Fair enough.😂😂

I just came here to say that The Last Of Us is one of the best stories I’ve seen, and loved watching it reimagined from the game!

Part 1 that is, I was less impressed with part 2. But season 3 should be interesting, playing as Abby! 😄

To answer the question, I’d probably do what Joel did 😅

No. The rest of society could die for all I care.

Would your child agree though? Especially if they were the last one standing?

It has to do with the question. This is a 'discussion' board.

Penkie · Yesterday 21:34

No.

underthehawthorntree · Yesterday 21:35

Surely everyone will answer the same thing- yes of course you would sacrifice your own but never your childs. Series must have been written by a man.

I would sacrifice myself FOR my child. Nobody else. And if it was a bio thing like you had to be closely related I'd kill my ex and the grandparents first. I would never sacrifice my child for anyone. And I wouldn't sacrifice myself for anyone other than my children. Because I'd be making my children motherless and they need me.

I would literally burn the lot of you for my children.

Before I had kids I would have sacrificed myself for anyone child, cfir anyone really, I've put myself in potentially lethal situations to save animals. As soon as I got pregnant I became the second most important person in the world. Because I'm the most important person to the most important person in the world.

Mamma283838 · Yesterday 21:38

I wouldn’t sacrifice my child. And I wouldn’t trust anyone else to look after them either in that scenario so I probably wouldn’t sacrifice myself either.

All right Cersei, calm down 🤣

And tbh I think humanity becoming extinct would be a good thing so I certainly wouldn't fight to stop that happening. I was gutted at the end of the day the earth stood still when he stopped the robot bugs from eating everyone. I'd have loved to see the aftermath when all the animals were returned and the earth was healthy.

nonnoandgranny · Yesterday 21:41

oc not.

It has to do with the question. This is a 'discussion' board.

The question is “What would you do?”

What sort of discussion were you hoping to get out of quoting me and just stating that you might feel the opposite?

That isn’t a discussion.

If you’d given reasons for it or asked why I felt that way given X, or similar, there might have been a discussion to be had. But I can’t reasonably tell you you don’t feel the way you do and the way you feel has no bearing on the way I feel.

WonderingWanda · Yesterday 23:28

I would sacrifice my own life to.save my child but would never sacrifice theirs.

No. Appreciate this is hypothetical but kids are off limits and if that is what humanity has come to then it's no longer humanity.

Or you could argue that someone laying their life down (or that of the most precious person to them) to save others is the very definition of humanity.

zebrazoop · Today 03:39

Nope. My kids need me alive

dancehysterical22 · Today 03:56

No

OlympicProcrastinator · Today 05:06

The world would burn before I sacrificed my child.

Id expect the same from any other parent too.
