Aibu? Husbands night out

My husband and I have argued about this multiple times...
Last night he had a work night out. Went at 4pm came home at 1230. I get up for work at 530 and we have 2 dogs that bark when he comes in, will wake me up and as he well knows I have trouble sleeping once I'm woken up. Am I being unreasonable to think on school nights it's not unreasonable for him to come home at a decent time? Also to add the nights out aren't unusual, fairly regular things, he had one 2 weeks ago and another in a few weeks.if it makes a difference we also have 2 teenage kids although they're obviously off school at the moment

Whilst I totally understand your frustration, he’s not really doing anything wrong. Are you also equally enjoying late nights out? If not, is there resentment there over that, as well as the frustration of not getting back to sleep easily?

For those saying to train dogs not to bark, that’s a hard one to do as you’re trying to train a dog away from its natural instinct to alert to noise. Personally I’d rather not train that out of my dog as it’s a deterrent to theft. However, OP may wish to do this and there are many guides out there showing how to achieve it.

Your dogs need the training, not your partner!

CoralOP · 24/07/2026 10:29

I'm afraid to say if you have teenagers now then they will also be coming in late in the coming years, you can't lock them all in.

Larrythecatforpm · 24/07/2026 10:30

Simple, train your dogs not to bark constantly. Don’t be lazy.

Elphamouche · 24/07/2026 10:31

Get some loops, train the dogs. Neither of us work standard hours, but 1230 isn’t really late.

sittingonabeach · 24/07/2026 10:32

Do you wake him up when you get up?

Ablondiebutagoody · 24/07/2026 10:33

12:30 every few weeks isn't a big deal. Get rid of the dogs if you don't like them.

Pippa12 · 24/07/2026 10:34

I can understand your frustration as once I’ve been woken up I’m not going back to sleep 😬 However, it’s my problem not my DH so I wouldn’t ever give him a ‘curfew’ and 12:30 really isn’t late.

VestibuleWeaver · 24/07/2026 10:35

Yes, YABU. An adult arriving at their own home in the wee hours, once every few weeks, is hardly a big deal. Stop being so controlling.

caringcarer · 24/07/2026 10:58

Why do your dogs bark at your DH? My dogs bark at strangers but not people who live in the house.

CypressGrove · 24/07/2026 11:02

YABU, I'd not be impressed if my DH told me to be home before 12.30 when I've gone for work drinks or out with friends.
Probably best to deal with the dogs waking you now before your teenagers also start coming home past midnight.

This.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/07/2026 11:27

What curfew would you prefer he had?

ColdAsAWitches · 24/07/2026 11:55

Oh please!

BillieWiper · 24/07/2026 12:00

Yeah it's the dogs that are the issue. They need training to not bark when people enter the house.

His night out every two weeks doesn't sound excessive. You don't mention him being annoying, drunk, hungover etc so it's just down to the dogs making noise.

Your kids will be wanting to stay out later than that and you can't just expect everyone to come home early.

BluntButEmpathic · 24/07/2026 12:04

YANBU to feel really unsettled by this (fellow light sleeper here) but YABU to expect your husband to come home early because of it. Training the dogs not to bark would be a great idea. Also, I find a combination of daily exercise and taking magnesium bisglycinate at bedtime makes me sleep much more soundly and be more likely to get back to sleep when disturbed. I think you’re also probably more disturbed because you’re annoyed with your DH which will make it much harder to get back to sleep!

MyLimeGuide · 24/07/2026 12:04

Lol! Obviously YABU

PollyBell · 24/07/2026 12:06

Did you put him on the naughty step? Yes you are being unreasonable he is not a child

I know men need permission to breathe on here but seriously

BlueMum16 · 24/07/2026 12:09

It's the dogs that is the problem.

What happens when your teenagers start going out too?

NoSausage · 24/07/2026 12:24

How will you feel if, when the dogs are gone, he says no more pets?

AmusedMember · 24/07/2026 12:42

There is something else going on... You need to work that out, 12.30 is not late... Train the dogs?!

ClearFruit · 24/07/2026 13:27

YABU. You cannot give a grown man a curfew.
