Aibu? Husbands night out

My husband and I have argued about this multiple times...
Last night he had a work night out. Went at 4pm came home at 1230. I get up for work at 530 and we have 2 dogs that bark when he comes in, will wake me up and as he well knows I have trouble sleeping once I'm woken up. Am I being unreasonable to think on school nights it's not unreasonable for him to come home at a decent time? Also to add the nights out aren't unusual, fairly regular things, he had one 2 weeks ago and another in a few weeks.if it makes a difference we also have 2 teenage kids although they're obviously off school at the moment

YABU. Train your dogs not to bark and wake you up.

2chocolateoranges · 24/07/2026 08:49

If it was every night then I’d say he is being unreasonable but once a fortnight isn’t much.

i do understand how you are feeling though as once I’m awake I struggle to get back to sleep , but it’s not every night.

Lomonald · 24/07/2026 08:49

Have you tried earplugs ? You are being ridiculous, your husband shouldn't need a "curfew" because you can't sleep and you have barky dogs.

Fluffyscrubber · 24/07/2026 08:49

YABU
He’s a grown man, and your children are teenagers so it’s not like by staying out until midnight he’s leaving you to care for babies alone.

piscesangel · 24/07/2026 08:50

YABU. Staying out to 12:30 is really not excessive, nor is having a night out every few weeks. Wear ear plugs?

MotherofGoddess · 24/07/2026 08:50

YABU. 12:30 isn’t that late. It’s a Thursday night so surely you can cope with one disrupted sleep before a lie in at the weekend? Are you saying he can never go on a work night out?

Soon it could be your teenagers staying out past your bedtime, so I would consider a strategy for training your dogs or wearing earplugs!

Cosyblankets · 24/07/2026 08:51

Thought you were going to say you had little ones and you were doing all the work

UniquePinkSwan · 24/07/2026 08:51

YABU and controlling

Velvetandleather · 24/07/2026 08:51

You can’t be serious, you want to give him a curfew like a teenager so your sleep isn’t disrupted. The man came back at 12.30.

pilates · 24/07/2026 08:53

Annoying, but he shouldn’t have a curfew because you have barky dogs.

StrangerOnline · 24/07/2026 08:53

What time would you like him to come back in?
You are being unreasonable, 12:30 pm is not that late.
Sort your dogs out, or try earplugs?

TrishM80 · 24/07/2026 08:55

Yet another reason I don't have dogs.

mumsntt · 24/07/2026 09:20

learn to control your dogs then

LilacMeadows123 · 24/07/2026 09:22

Very unreasonable. Wear earplugs or train your dogs. Not best fair he has to live his life based around your needs

Willowskyblue · 24/07/2026 09:24

Sort the dogs. Presumably they annoy the neighbours too when they bark.
Quies ear plugs are great.

bothydreamer · 24/07/2026 09:29

Is there more going on here? Are you annoyed that he has more of a social life than you?
When my DH is out it's often much later than that but I'm genuinely really glad that he makes time for his friends, something that lots of men aren't great at. Maybe it's time for you to do the same? Might not be relevant, but I sense a bit of resentment.

And yes, train the dogs, bet your neighbours don't love that either!

Backpain2026 · 24/07/2026 09:30

12.30 is not late.

Wear earplugs

Train dogs not to bark

Totally

BauhausOfEliott · 24/07/2026 09:31

You can’t give a grown man a curfew and it’s not his fault your dogs bark and you have sleep problems. Also he only seems to go out once every few weeks which is hardly excessive.

Moonnstarz · 24/07/2026 09:33

Yes YABU, it sounds like you are annoyed at him having an active social life.
You have older children so surely there is no issue there of needing help at bedtime and leaves you unsupported.
The dogs surely need training. Have they always been like this?
Regarding night waking then I think use the suggestions others have given...I have reached the age where I spend a lot of time awake at night (need a wee, then can't sleep) so I get it can be hard, but I don't think you can take it out on him.

modgepodge · 24/07/2026 09:37

Yeah sorry OP I think you’re being a bit unreasonable here. Imagine if a man was telling a woman she had to be back by a certain time on a night out…

Why isn’t it his fault that the dogs bark? Everyone is telling the OP to control and train her dogs, but they’re presumably his dogs too.

SilverPink · 24/07/2026 09:42

I’d get those dogs sorted before your teenagers get to the age where they’re out partying til all hours or you’ll never get any sleep

Retro12 · 24/07/2026 09:45

YABU - The barking dogs are the problem, as it wouldn't matter if he come home at 10:30 and you were asleep, the dogs would still wake you up!

NoisyViewer · 24/07/2026 09:52

Going out every other week when you have teenage kids is not excessive. You my dear are a red flag. Your dogs bark. So what. He isn’t intentionally waking you up. If he was stopping you from going out people would be saying leave him.
