Old boss not happy with work I’m doing for free

i know I’m not but I need to get this off my chest because it’s been driving me crazy over the last 24 hours!

My fixed term contract came to an end 6 months ago. I agreed with my boss some work I would continue doing, and projects I would stop. Despite putting up these boundaries, she has continued to chase me on a variety of things.

For context, the project I said i would do is non urgent, an idea I came up with, and that she and others benefit from when it’s completed. They’ve been difficult throughout, including backtracking on the original plan which meant I had to go back to the beginning to rework it. As they are not paying me, they don’t seem to value my time at all.

Due to the fact I have a new paid role and am on another fixed term contract, her work is low priority and so I’ve been slow to progress.

one of the leads asked if I would meet and present what I’d done so far. I said I did not have anything to present but we could chat about where it’s up to and try and come to an agreement on the reworked version.

the meeting was hostile, they were clearly unhappy with me and also seemed unhappy with the project itself and unenthusiastic. Despite this , they were pressuring me that it needed to be done quickly, though not saying by when or giving a reason.

I explained that I couldn’t do it quickly, but they were welcome to find someone else who could and I’d step down, and I was happy to pass on materials. They suggested that ‘we see where we get to’ and I carry on working on it but if it’s too slow someone else will take over. So basically, i do more work for free until they persuade someone else to take over, then I lose all credit.

this kind of behaviour and culture is totally normalised in my industry, but I’m actually flabbergasted about how rude they were 😅 it feels like it’s impossible to truly quit previous roles and you are chased about things forever!

Bingo, I feel like I’M the difficult and problematic one for not working faster on it, or starting an idea I couldn’t finish.

There are easier and less stressful ways to get publications, but now I’m struggling to extract myself without causing problems.

well done for leaving!

can I ask what your area was/what you moved into? I work in health data science and am exploring options, as you can imagine!

Data science? Double fuck that.

Honestly this sounds absolutely mad! Don’t know which is worse, agreeing to work for free or them being so ungrateful.

I’d get AI to draft you something long winded and vaguely passive agressive where you say how much you’ve enjoyed coming up with the concept and getting it to this stage but now you feel it’s time to hand on the project to someone with more short term capacity who can give it the time and resource it deserves. Make it sound like you only ever agreed to get it this far, and give them some guff like a project plan. Say that this is the product of your work and make it clear that you will not be doing anything further or meeting to discuss. Tell your new boss in a lighthearted matter of fact way.

Then immediately become very busy on lots of new and important work and either ignore emails for a good few days and reply with a couple of sentences referring them back to the handover email, or tell them that you are now at capacity with project X and they would need to speak to your new boss to release you from this formally first, and agree some sort of salary share.

Shedmistress · 23/07/2026 20:06

What exactly are you getting out of this?

caringcarer · 23/07/2026 20:16

Stop doing it then. You are an idiot for working for free for this ungrateful ex boss.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/07/2026 20:23

That’s where you say you’re not doing any more work for them. End it now.

NigellaAwesome · 23/07/2026 20:29

Wow, how ungrateful! I like @Heronwatcher‘s draft

I’m sorry, making a living in academia is quite impossible.

You’ll have lots of transferable skills and lots of options as a scientist. I was in humanities but I’m now a very happy lawyer and nobody expects me to work for free.

Nobody outside of academia would accept these conditions, just look at the responses on your thread. You too can quit the madness of doing highly complex and highly valued work for exposure.

GCAcademic · 24/07/2026 00:12

Knew this would be academia.

Giraffehaver · 24/07/2026 00:18

Tell them you don't work for them or get paid by them so they can sod off. CFs

Igmum · 24/07/2026 08:16

Oh dear I’m an academic. I assume this is publications? It’s very common to work on these at the end of a project and is a career advantage for all members of the team - and if you’re on a temporary contract this would be a big step to getting a permanent one/getting your next temporary one. I haven’t heard of teams that both expect you to do everything and are this miserable about it before. Realistically your specialism sounds highly transferable and most universities aren’t in a good way at the moment so moving on might be a very good idea.

TheMimsy · 24/07/2026 09:09

@Pieofpumpkin can you not write a letter explaining that. Because of old bosses feedback and attitude (worded nicer perhaps) you feel you are all at an impasse now and what you feel is the best thing for the project and a timely completion in the direction and to the parameters that they want is that you hand over all materials and project plans now. With that in mind please find my upto date notes attached and I wish you all the best with it.

immediate. No leeway or wiggle room. This is an untenable relationship with them and zero appreciation or respect.

you have better things to be working on and supporting free or paid.
