What’s your favourite European city to visit?

Just to walk around, take in some nice sights and eat/drink.

I really enjoy Antwerp and Dinant. I find Belgians really friendly and easy to talk to.

I really love Gent - if my Flemish was better I'd happily move there.

In Italy I'm very fond of Lecce.

I love Paris and Ghent. I also had a great weekend in Lille. Barcelona might be my favourite so far.

Places I haven't been to but want to are - Florence, Lisbon, Madrid and probably Krakow.

I met a guy in a hostel in Belgium once who said he had been to every major city in Europe and quite a few smaller ones and he said his No 1 was Krakow and his No 2 was Ghent. Which is why Krakow is on my list.

In the last couple of years I’ve really enjoyed smaller cities. Granada and Gent were both lovely relaxing weekends. The Alhambra is so stunning. We went to Gent in a May heatwave and it felt like a party atmosphere. Enjoyed some very strong fruit beers sitting at canal side bars. My only regret is forgetting insect repellent.

I also like Naples with day trips to Herculaneum and Pompeii and Vesuvius

Copenhagen, always and forever.

Granada. Obviously the Alhambra is stunning (book before travelling because they limit tickets) but there's also the cathedral, the cave houses up the hill, the walk along the river, flamenco dancing and all the delicious Spanish food and drink.

Naples,nowhere else beats it for me.

Venice. I go there every year for the art / architecture biennale, it's just wonderful.

I also love going to Paris, but I'm FROM Paris so I know the city like my pocket and got loads of friends there.

Other favourites are Warsaw and Belgrade.

Definitely Ghent.

Followed by Bruges, then Vienna (especially in Spring)

But above all...Rome

I like the southern european cities like Rome, there is so much to see and do. I hate fighting off the pickpockets and the "tourist tax" though, which for me doesn't make for a relaxing experience.

Northern European cities like Stockhom are a lot less stressful but also far less interesting to me.

Am delighted to see so many votes for Ghent. I'll be there end of next week, together with Bruges, Ypres and Waterloo.

As for my favourite (s) Top of the list has to be Cordoba, although a short stay will do it mostly, combined with Granada it is hard to beat. Next is Bologna, mad place great fun, then Padua, gorgeous underrated little city with train to Venice in 25 minutes. Perfect.

The bigger cities/ capitals are good to see once IMO, but there are so many to see and so little time! Rome is a firm favourite,

Leiden and Utrecht in the Netherlands. Agree with others about Ghent.
