Has vaping caused more problems than it has solved?

Really random thought, but I would be interested in seeing the statistics in how helpful vaping has been.

i get that when it was first introduced it seemed like a fantastic idea & would help people stop smoking cigarettes- however, being a Mum to teens I really believe it has caused a whole new problem & one which is harder to control than smoking.

so many young people vape. I was recently on a night out & every young person around me, in the venue was vaping. I doubt as many young people would have started smoking cigarettes due to how expensive they are, the health implications are more widely known, & You can’t be as sneaky to smoke inside a venue - so could they be bothered to have to leave a venue to stand outside in the cold?

i also think it’s harder for schools to police due to the lack of smell (yes I know there is a smell, but it’s hardly as awful as a cigarette). So it seems more is going on in school toilets.

it has also opened up the ‘black market’ of disposable vapes being sold on the internet - this has also caused problems with some laced with different substances. Also, until recently, they were not sold behind tills, so I’m sure it caused an increase in shop lifting from young people.

so my question - am I being unreasonable in thinking that vaping has caused more problems than it has solved?

The chemical is banned in the UK. Two of those articles aren’t from the UK and aren’t relevant to vaping here
the other doesn’t refer to popcorn lung

You think the vapes sold in vape shops are safe 😂😂 well here’s one for you in Manchester https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/woman-20-claims-vaping-gave-26252710

I had said I saw news articles relating to vapes. It’s irrelevant what country they’ve from. You called me a liar and I proved I wasn’t

Woman, 20, claims vaping gave her 'popcorn lung'

Abby's vaping habits set her back £135 a month

The first and third link are the same case. This was a boy in Canada who was vaping THC and 'used very deep inhalations' from a bong.

The second link is a case of spontaneous pneumothorax and nothing to do with 'popcorn lung'. This is not a vanishingly rare condition and it is possible that vaping increases the risk, along with being young, being tall and thin, and smoking. The boy in the article is young, tall and thin. We are not told whether he had a history of smoking as the vast majority of regular vapers do.

https://www.asthmaandlung.org.uk/conditions/pneumothorax-collapsed-lung

From your BBC link:
While there has been concern about the use of diacetyl in e-liquid, Cancer Research UK said in 2018 there was "no good evidence" that vaping might cause "popcorn lung"

From the ASH briefing I linked to:
28. Diacetyl has been linked to a rare condition, bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as ‘popcorn lung’. It became known as ‘popcorn lung’ because it was thought to be caused by exposure to diacetyl used as a food flavouring in popcorn factories, although that is disputed. The idea that vaping can cause popcorn lung is frequently repeated, but although cigarette smokers are exposed to over ten times as much diacetyl as people who vape, smoking has not been shown to cause ‘popcorn lung’.

Also diacetyl has been banned in UK and EU eliquid since 2016.

I'm not calling you a liar. The press articles are lies, or at least deeply dishonest misrepresentations. But you're not seeing 'popcorn lung' because that's not what's going on for those patients.

i didn’t say they were safe, and she bought them from a corner shop not an actual vape shop
i also didn’t call you a liar
anyone can say they’re diagnosed with popcorn lung, it doesn’t mean they actually have it because it’s a very specific chemical that causes it

the frustration is because smokers are going “OMG popcorn lung, I’m better off smoking” when the chemical that causes it is in cigarettes in huge amounts

I didn’t say I vaped around other people
people make more drama over vape exhale than they do actual cigarette smoke or exhaust fumes

I don’t want to pack it in, it keeps me from smoking

You probably do though.

And you don’t want to give it up because it stops you from smoking. Smoking is a choice. You don’t have to start doing it because you stop vaping.

Says one who used to smoke. You can stop. Nobody can tell you how you have to find your own way. But it can be done.

Think of the money you would save if nothing else.

It would save me about £5 a week, it’s the cost of a coffee
I don’t drink, smoke, fly, go on holiday, eat meals out, go to the cinema/concerts/theatre, have beauty treatments…
vaping is the one tiny habit I have so no I won’t be quitting it until I want to

You're having a go at the wrong poster. It was me who said you hadn't seen news articles 'where users have something called popcorn lung' because that's not what's going on for those patients.

Goodness knows what's going on with the last of your links, as pp said, it's a patient's own claim. If this had really been a case of bronchiolitis obliterans linked to nicotine vaping then there would be a scientific paper on it which would have got a lot of publicity. It's really irresponsible reporting.

Historically a lot of parents have bought cigarettes for their children my friends mom used to give me a packet when I was in high school fgs

My friends child struggled with anxiety she gave her a vape to help despite never smoking or vaping herself

My sons friend vapes more than one actually bought and maintained by their parents its like they WANT their child hooked

Its insane no-one sees it as an issue
