Is 'next weekend' on a Monday five days away or twelve? - AIBU

I went to visit my DD / grandkids last weekend. It's a 200 mile journey each way & I usually stay over for a couple of days, sleeping on their sofa.
I had a WhatsApp conversation with DD on the previous Monday & we agreed I'd visit 'next weekend'. I arrived on the Friday evening as normal only to be met by a confused Son-In-Law who was expecting me the following weekend. As always, they were very gracious & re-arranged one friends visit (I wouldn't have minded either way). We had a great time, took the grand-kids / DD out for a meal etc. etc. I've asked a few friends / relatives & opinion is fairly split.
So, my AIBU is,
if you are speaking to someone on a Monday, is 'next weekend' 5 days away or 12 days away
YABU - it's 12 days away
YANBU - it's 5 days away

‘This weekend’ would be 5 days away, ‘next weekend’ would be 12.

On a Monday, the closest weekend coming up is "this weekend" and the one after is "next weekend"

My husband and I also disagree on this (so I have learned to clarify!) but in my view:
5 days away is ‘this weekend’
12 days away is ‘next weekend’.

Had exactly this conversation today - the coming weekend is this weekend, the one after that is next weekend!

To me, the weekend at the end of this week is this weekend, the one after that is next weekend and the one that's just gone is last weekend, but if I was making arrangements like yours I would always check the actual dates too.

agree with everyone else, it would be “the weekend” or “this weekend” if it was 5 days away. “Next weekend” would be the one 12 days away.

But I would probably have clarified with the date just to be certain!

I always say ‘not this weekend but next weekend’ for this very reason!

I would always clarify with dates in this scenario. Too many opinions. I think also it might be a language thing. In my multilingual household DH would definitely think you were coming the weekend after.

This weekend: 5 days
Next weekend: 12 days

You can argue it either way (although you'd be wrong) but I always clarify by date to save misunderstandings.

I now tend to say 'this coming weekend' for 5 days away and 'the weekend after this coming one' for 12 days, as some fools people do say 'next weekend' to mean 5 days hence. But those people are as wrong as wrong can be.

I agree with the consensus, but I also confirm with dates as well as there is room for misunderstanding.

I'd say this weekend for the one coming (but would also understand next weekend for the same thing), but would clarify with a date. For the one 12 days away I would say "the weekend after next". To me, the one 12 days away definitely wouldn't be "next weekend".

I do agree with majority view but think it’s also contextual. If, on a Monday, DH said to me ‘Are we doing anything next weekend?’ I’d probably think he was talking about the coming weekend rather than the one after.

12 days but I would always include the date as well as people use those phrases differently.

My husband is always telling me off for this - but to me 'THIS weekend' is the one we are about to have, 'NEXT weekend' will happen next week.

So to me you definetly turned up the wrong weekend.
