To be absolutely sick of my mother?

I’m so so fed up with my mum and I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable and should have more tolerance for it.

our biggest issue is whether or not I will have children.

For context I am my mothers only child. She frequently tells me that she didn’t want kids and if she could do her life over again she wouldn’t have had any. However, in the same breath she begs for grandchildren constantly.

I am happily engaged and due to be married. She’s taken this as the idea that once we’re married we’ll have kids. I have told her many many times this isn’t the case and neither of us want children.

i am in my mid twenties and I am very career driven. I don’t want to explain my role in case it’s outing but think along the lines of accountant or solicitor. I am very proud of my job but it comes with long hours and little free time. I would not want to reduce my hours to have children. my fiancé works in medicine and therefore similarly has long hours. We enjoy the little time we have together and selfishly don’t want this taken away by anything.

i have also never been particularly maternal. I had some trauma as a child which perhaps has influenced this but either way I have never felt this ‘need’ for children.

when I tell my mum this she gets very angry and says it’s unfair she will never be a grandma. She says that I will change my mind eventually and that then it will be too late and i’ll be sad. She also loves the old “who will visit when you’re old?” I don’t think that’s a good enough reason to have children for one, and I also have lots of other people who I’d like to think would visit me when I’m old.

going back to the trauma mentioned earlier, I don’t want to go too much into it but essentially it was enabled by my mum. She has now ‘moved on’ from it and therefore feels I should have too and that it’s unfair for me to hold onto it apparently.

if I try and criticise anything she goes onto “oh so I’m just the worst mum in the world am I”

Shes recently been on at me for my weight. I’m 5’3 and about 11 stone so I appreciate that I am overweight. However, she acts like I need to join my 600lb life and that it’s going to send me to an early grave. She constantly comments about how much I eat and what I choose to eat and it’s exhausting.

the final thing is that she’s what I would refer to as an “elevenerife” person (you know the old joke, you’ve been to Tenerife they’ve been to elevenerife). Everything I ever do is nothing compared to her and her life. She always has to one up me and it feels like I can never be enough.

The latest example of this was that I told her fiancé and I had booked to go to Fiji for our honeymoon and she said “oh it’s nothing compared to Mauritius, I’ve been to mother and that was soo much nicer! Why on earth did you book there? You’ll hate it and wish you’d asked for my opinion”

she came to our house last week and all she did was moan that it wasn’t up to the same standard as hers. everything was apparently unclean or dirty, despite the fact we have a cleaner who comes once a week and I know our house is tidy.

We have two cats and a dog and she hates the cats. She pushes them out of her way and says horrible things about them being dirty or annoying. She says it’s their fault I don’t want kids and if I get rid of them maybe it’ll make me realise I want a proper baby (and not a “silly cat” that I can’t possibly love that much). She also has this idea that when she’s old she will live with us but keeps making the point that when this happens we’d have to get rid of our cats as she doesn’t like them. Obviously we’d never do that but still!

anyway, all in all I’m getting really fed up of these constant put downs and nags. I’m getting to the point where I barely want to see her and don’t enjoy being around her. I try to have a constructive conversation with her but it never goes well. I’m at my wits end with it all. she makes me doubt myself all the time and I’m just fed up!

OP, it sounds like you’ve been carrying a lot of emotional upset. Can you get some counselling and talk through how to stay emotionally safe around her and how to limit her in your life? There are strategies that can really help.

Francestein · 23/07/2026 10:11

Start calling her Moaning Myrtle. Suggest she speak to her GP about getting some antidepressants. Call her on her behaviour. “I have heard all my life how miserable having me made you and how you wished you never had kids. Why would I do that to myself?”

Loulou4022 · 23/07/2026 10:14

First post nailed it!!

she and my dad divorced when I was very young! She has remarried but he’s worse than her (I already have limited contact with him which is another bone of contention). I do wonder how much of her behaviour is his influence but obviously I can’t suggest that to her

All the more reason to keep your distance!
sorry you have this to deal with

I think I just feel a sense of obligation. Deep down I know she’s not a nice person but she is lonely and has few other people so I feel like I have to be there for her

You don't. She's lonely because she's a horrible person. It's her own fault and you're not obligated to do anything.

Best thing I did was go NC with my mother. Life is more peaceful.

ChaToilLeam · 23/07/2026 10:29

She's lonely because she's horrible. That's her bed to lie in.

If you can't quite face cutting her off, then go and visit her, or meet in a cafe, rather than her coming to see you. Then you can leave if she starts carping. Likewise end calls if she gets critical.

Ultimately you can't change her but you can try to care less.

I have to be honest I don't think any of what she's said/done is all that bad. Maybe the comments about wishing she hadn't had children but the rest are nothing worth losing sleep over.

Having a cleaner once a week in a house with 3 animals really does mean your house is not clean so I agree with her there.

Hello, OP's mum... 🙄

PearsandAlmonds · 23/07/2026 11:21

Your mother and mine are from the same cookie cutter - luckily, now I am well beyond childbearing age so those questions have stopped, but I remember so clearly that she she got so frantic around about the time that she thought we should be getting married and having kids ( she doesn't actually know that we did get married, just the two of us, because she would have been a nightmare)

Like your mum she is very few people in her life and so I wasn't able to go fully NC - after a couple of instances of wild overstepping the boundaries, I went very heavy-duty grey rock for a couple of years.

It was hard work am not going to lie, especially as she was very very good at cranking up guilt/obligation aspects or engineering ways to try to up contact. But I had to remember that I was setting the path for future interactions, and a little pain now would be worth it in the end.

My mother, like yours, was convinced that she was going to retire and then come live with us, and we had to have a very strong conversation, which upset her greatly, but after being noncontact for a while, it helped me manage her better. I got much more skilled at dealing with 'Oh, just break my heart and say I was a terrible monster of a mother' comments or 'don't my feelings matter' or 'others' daughters love their mothers and would do this for them' kind of comments.

I have a very strict set of rules for myself and what I will and will not accept from her, and if she gets started on one of her rants, I suddnly have a work calI or the doorbell is going or somebody has just arrived - I also learned, especially when you're in a relationship do not volunteer your mother any information.

Trust me on this. My mother now thinks I'm the most boring personal alive because I don't share anything with her, I'll chat about the garden, I will chat about the weather, I will chat about certain aspects of the news but she doesn't get to know what I'm spending my money on, any aspect of my relationship or my friendships. I don't even really tell about my work anymore after I found out that she was telling people I was a Judge when she was complaining to businesses and services to get them to do things she wanted in a 'My daughter's is a Judge, you know' kinda way ( at the time I did work in law but definitely not as a Judge!)

This started about 13/14 years ago. It took about two or three years to get the balance right and bed in the boundaries of what I wouldn't accept and manoeuvre around all the machinations - and I've pretty much got it now to a fairly steady place. To be fair, we also moved away from the local area; that was incredibly helpful :D

Gosh this was timely for me. I’ve been getting v annoyed by my parents. This has made me put it into perspective cos they are nowhere near like this. But I do relate to the making pops about the way you live. They don’t do it to my brothers only me - and I’m 51!!! Anyway, I’ve tried everything - hard words, humour, ultimatums (u can’t come round if you do that). Nowt works so now I just ignore and do shorter visits. And I don’t have them at mine at all. I haven’t said that I just am always ‘busy’ if she asks to come over. I just go to them and brace myself and when they start overstepping I always excuses to go. I haven’t the power then.

I doubt she will listen no matter what you say . Just vote with your feet. Don’t let her at yours (make excuses) when she starts her nonsense make excuses that you have to leave. Rinse and repeat. Believe me it will Ava your sanity.

Runaway1 · 23/07/2026 14:59

Sorry she’s so unkind to you. I grew up like this too and didn’t want kids for a long time as a result. When I did become a mum, she wasn’t really that interested apart from to take photos to show off to all and sundry and paint herself as the doting grandmother! There isn’t really a grandparent relationship to speak of, sadly.

Others have given good advice about setting boundaries around conversations around weight/children. And to live your life as you wish, with as little influence from her as possible. As for the guilt, if you find the answer please post it and share it!

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 23/07/2026 15:04

She is acting very immature and you need to put some space between you for both your sakes. She's treating you like the grown up, with her being the child. If she can't or won't keep appropriate boundaries, then I'm afraid you'll have to

Lottapianos · 23/07/2026 15:15

'I also learned, especially when you're in a relationship do not volunteer your mother any information.'

Very good advice, and I'm exactly the same. I tell my parents virtually nothing. It's like that part of the Miranda rights - anything you say can and will be used against you. They just can't be trusted with sensitive information - it will all be dismissed/ minimised / ridiculed/ ignored.

It's very sad and weird to have to put your own parents on an information diet, but you learn the hard way that it's by far the safer option

CheeseyOnionPie · 23/07/2026 15:15

God she sounds like a nightmare. Honestly nothing you ever do will be right or good enough. If you have babies then it will just be whole new arena of stuff she can criticise you about. Enjoy your life with your fiancé and your clean house and your lovely pets.

Fernhurst · 23/07/2026 15:24

She also loves the old “who will visit when you’re old?”

Who will visit when you're old mum? I'm moving to Australia

ginasevern · 23/07/2026 15:35

She'd only push my cat out the way once.

Mary46 · 23/07/2026 15:39

Keep your boundaries.. what age is she. Mine is 80s I stopped telling so much. All negative too. Visits to the minimal

Travsmam · 23/07/2026 16:08

She sounds like my mother in law. A true narcissist who made lives hell. She’s dead now 👍🏻

Trust me, this is a huge issue when she is at our house. We keep them out of the way where possible when she’s there (for their sake). She has tried to be quite harsh with her pushing of them but that was the biggest row and means that she now does move them gently (albeit with horrible words that go with it). I love my cats and I would never see them mistreated in that way no matter how much she doesn’t like them

I'm afraid my choice would be pretty simple, mother or not. I could understand someone afraid of animals or even not a big fan of them in which case the situation would be sensibly and mutually managed. But your mum sounds just plain nasty.

Well I dont have mine at my house for far less than that. Can't you just go to hers? You have more control then and can up and leave when you like. Its way better now I do that.

BananaWhip · 24/07/2026 09:12

Read up on FOG
fear, obligation, guilt. This is what she’s doing to you. Hopefully you’ll soon go low or no contact with her. Don’t invite around to your home if she’s going to be cruel to your cats. She’s abusive!
