Do I quit my job?

sodoffbeforemycupofcoff · 22/07/2026 10:17

I started a role last year and was on 6 months probation. 8 months into the role my probation was extended due to instances that occurred between the two months my probation should have been reviewed (6-8 months).
I was told what I need to do to “get there” which I have taken on board and tried hard to do. since the meeting, I have had another (informal) meeting with my manager that I asked for to explain how I feel since the meeting everything seems to be going wrong. I come in each day expecting to be fired and I keep seeing emails with my name on that are “going wrong”. For context this role is extremely high pressure, I work a full day of customer service calls while trying to process sales orders that come through constantly and fast with every particular requirements that we must make sure the item has. It’s like working two full time jobs.
I broke down on my call and said I don’t know if it is my time to just say I quit and be done with it.
My manager did say since my probation meeting I am now meeting my other targets, but it is other things I now need to brush up on. He followed up by saying he didn’t want to see me go and believes I have all the potential to complete probation.
this doesn’t disregard my anxiety and constant fear. I have children who rely on me. I have been looking elsewhere but nothing is coming up that would fit my needs. I am a single mother with high outgoings. I just don’t know what to do for the best.

Honestly id look for something else. You cant spend all day anxious and worrying about mistakes. You'll make yourself unwell. Im sorry you're feeling this way. I've been there

Oldgum · 22/07/2026 10:20

It sounds as though the decision will very likely be taken out of your hands soon anyway.
ie jump before being pushed

nomas · 22/07/2026 10:24

Is there a trusted colleague who does the same or similar job?

Have a chat/coffee with them and ask them if the workload is normal. Ie Are the call taking and simultaneous order processing normal expectations? Or are they trying to make you do two people’s jobs?

Then speak to your manager and say you want a clear plan of what is going well and what needs to be improved to pass your probation.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 22/07/2026 11:10

Life is too short to be this unhappy and anxious. You’ve given it a good go, but it seems you and this company/team aren’t a great fit. Start sending your CV out today and, yes, I’d consider leaving before you are pushed if you can line something else up (though you might want to check whether you claim benefits should you need them if you have left rather than been let go - am out of the loop on whether this affects claiming UC etc).

I’d have a good think about what it is in this role that doesn’t work, though, so you can address or avoid it in the next role. Is it the people? Sometimes that is all it takes. Is it self esteem/lack of confidence in your skills, so would doing some free online courses to up-skill be useful (there are loads on the gov.uk website, plus google ‘free’ courses)? Is it the industry and can your skills/role be used in another?

So at the end of the six months probation period, was it extended then?

The way I’ve read your post looks like you had no 6 month extension/completion and suddenly in month 8 they extended it?

That’s exactly it. The contract says unless it is passed, presume it has been extended.
I had no issues raised prior. They just extended it after 2 months.

I agree. But it’s so hard finding a job now

The first 6 months are the hardest in a new job. It sounds like you’ve made a lot of progress and your manager wants you to stay and has faith in you. In another 6 months you’ll find it all much easier.

It may not be the right job for you, and I’m sure you’ll find another job you prefer but I would be cautious about quitting before you have something else lined up.

ThePeppyOpalScroller · 22/07/2026 13:11

No decent employer would expect someone to do an impossible job. Get out while you have a chance. They probably recycle your role over and over.

Look for something else but don’t quit till you get it.
Pressure will be off as you know you’re going, but you won’t put yourself in financial difficulty.

The thing is there are plenty of people who are doing well. I suffer with ADHD do I really struggle more than the standard person and I get that things I do cause back lash but I can’t live in constant anxiety it’s really getting me down

They were something called “credits” when I was informed they are common and a lot of people get them.
everyone on the team has got them I think the issue lay with it being in my probationary period … well two months after it was due, but yes.

Yes, I never said it wasn’t. It was a mistake that happened between the 6months and 8months mark, as I stated in my post.
i haven’t posted to be told if I’m right or wrong. I made a mistake (like everyone else on the team) I apologised but now I feel like im touching everything and ruining it. It’s causing my huge anxiety which is making my working day worse and quite literally bareable. As the question states, I was asking MN advice on if I should quit.

It sounds as if the job is impossible. You can’t concentrate on customer service and process orders. Look for something else then resign.

Monty36 · 22/07/2026 14:22

If you leave your job with no good reason your benefits are curtailed considerably. You can put your reasons, advisors will ask your employer and then they will come to a decision.

Best to find another job before leaving.

I would also ask specifically what the reasons were for your probation extension. What precisely is it that you need to improve ? What timescales have been given and how will they feedback to you regularly so that you whether you are on track or not ?
Where you given any guidance or training ? Have you missed any? How do others manage this job or are you the only one doing it. I am wondering if it is manageable and if anyone else does it. If not it might not be doable. And the job might require adjustments.

No. One of them got a £3k credit who is a supervisor. My manager got a £53k credit at one point they’re all quite big I wasn’t told what mine was but could imagine it was around £5k.

I was told I’d have a 2 month extension and “don’t worry if I wanted you gone I’d have let you go and not extended your probation”.
then I asked for regular 121 meetings to check in so I know where I stand. I have had 1.
my second one I chased and I’ve been chasing since. My 3rd is meant to be tomorrow but I don’t hold any hope for that.
I am having no regular feed backs or check ins that I am satisfied with. I come in and things pop up out of the blue.
I have been told today (after being told over a one sentenced team message - after hounding him for a response) that I have nothing to worry about yesterday and today I come in to find more emails and things coming back.

Do you trust the manager's word when he says you have nothing to worry about? Do you think he is lying? Or that someone else can make the decision to sack you despite what he says?

Re the emails coming back - are you a perfectionist who expects of yourself that you will never make mistakes? Are you more concerned about these mistakes than anyone else?

With ADHD, I would have thought that a busy job with lots of different tasks would suit you, but if you hate it there is no harm in looking for another job.

Chill out, trust your manager, forgive yourself for mistakes, and meanwhile keep job hunting. Don't quit with nothing else lined up.

I don’t believe him when he says don’t worry if I am honest.
my ADHD definitely helps to an extent and it doesn’t help at the same time. With this role you have to be fast working AND a perfectionist. I have combined type ADHD and it affects my ability to have attention to details. I’m terrible at it. I enjoy a challenge but if the rest of the admin bits and bobs is boring I simply can’t concentrate to do it properly. It’s awful but it is also me and a condition I was lucky enough to be diagnosed with. I just feel like sometimes I’d love to work like the normal person.

What is this? Do you mean Autism and ADHD, also named AuDHD?
Because that is a different kettle of fish; the autism may be the more relevant and debilitating factor.

If you don't trust or believe your manager, definitely keep job hunting.
