I am. I’m morbidly obese. I carry it well though so most people don’t realise how big I really am. Im 163cm and 115kg and I need to loose weight for surgery, but I can’t because the tablets I am on make it impossible.

So you are eating 1200 calories a day and still can't lose weight?

KatiePricesKnickers · 22/07/2026 06:42

BurntBroccoli · 21/07/2026 23:09

Is everyone accounting for frame size, muscle mass and overall body proportions? Or just using inaccurate BMI?

No one replying to this thread on Mumsnet who is 5’ 3” and 15 stone is a top broad shouldered athlete.
They are just obese.

Yes. I eat less than that actually. I vomit a lot of my food straight back as I struggle to eat anything. I am taking medication that makes me nauseous, and every single calorie sticks. I have been told it’s related to the medication, my GP has confirmed it, but I still need to “loose weight” to access the operation which will allow me to get off the medication.
Rock, meet hard place.

Zempy · 22/07/2026 07:41

I was 13 stone 8 and 5 ft 4 so I was obese. I gained weight if I exceeded 1350 calories a day so it piled on easily during my late fifties.

I am now 8 stone 0 and a healthy BMI thanks to Mounjaro. Various other health issues vastly improved. I’m so grateful.

Do you want to lose weight or are you feeling strong and healthy?

I don't really like the way some people class themselves based on kg/cm height. My gym released an article showing how some of its healthiest, fittest instructors would be classed as overweight, nearly obese in one case. BMI was meant to monitor population, not individuals, and it worries me that some people won't exercise because they don't want their legs to get big, ie have muscle.
And some people can appear thin, but actually have more of the dangerous visceral fat.

Exactly this!

StonwEd · 22/07/2026 07:44

I'm just under obese. 11st 12 and 5ft 3. That's down from 13 st earlier this year. Not gonna stop until I'm a healthy weight, sick of being bigger. I'm 46 and fed up.

RobinEllacotStrike · 22/07/2026 07:44

My BMI was 41 - morbidly obese.
it’s now 24 / healthy weight range.

58, 5’8”

Lumpycat · 22/07/2026 07:47

Was BMI 31 at 14st 2lb and 5’6”. So was obese last year. Now down to 12st and middling overweight.

People keep telling me I look fantastic and don’t need to lose any more. My personal trainer is a young woman with exactly the same weight and height as me although very muscular. She looks amazing and is super fit. I definitely think I could do with losing another stone.

BMI isn’t perfect. But MOST people with BMI over 30 are very fat, not rugby players.

ACR7 · 22/07/2026 07:51

No but I have been. I’m 5ft 11 and 13stone 7 so still overweight but I’m ok with how I look. Still trying to loose abit more but I feel happy with myself over all

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 22/07/2026 07:58

@TheOpalFox , I was. I had a BMI of 35, it’s now between 19.5 and 20. It’s a horrible word and I’m much happier now I’ve lost weight.

Brightlittlecanary · 22/07/2026 08:04

Op, 30 percent of the British public are obese. A further 36 percent are over weight, so 66 percent in total

I was obese at a bmi 32, I used mounjaro to help me lose the weight, now bmi 20 and maintaining for over a year, and feel so so much better for it, and my blood tests show all healthy, which under scores it.

bmi has huge corridors and works well. Of course we have athletes etc who it doesn’t work for, but the vast majority of people are really not in this category.

perimenopoppet · 22/07/2026 08:09

You will find some very clear graphs here OP https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/health-survey-for-england/2022-part-2/adult-overweight-and-obesity

Around 30% of women are obese. I was for a short time after being healthy or just a tiny bit overweight my whole life, and no one knows I wasn’t just overweight or will really believe it when I now tell them (5’6 and was over 14st) our perception of obese has become skewed. This report doesn’t just use bmi it also compares waist/height ratios etc. bmi may be a crude tool for the individual but that often rolled out excuse isnt so valid at a population level - the change between 1993 and 2008 is horrifying.

However the one happy thing is the advent of GLP1s - I genuinely believe this new chapter in medication and understanding of obesity will gradually bring this back down. Sadly not as quickly as it could if made more affordable but in a decade or two. Like others on here I went from obese to healthy in a matter of months last year and am maintaining. It’s an absolute game changer for perimenopausal visceral fat gain. (Not to mention for those with insulin resistance and all the other reasons).

5ft 6 and 15st 7. Morbidly obese. Bmi 35
I actually just look quite overweight.
Had a body fat analysis done at work. I'm solid apparently. Decent bones, lots of muscle mass. Very little visceral fat- it's all on the outside.
Guy doing the exam was impressed as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar are all fine.
I'm active- 9 miles cycling 2 miles walking a day.
But yes. I'm morbidly obese.

Work in progress.

Jinxy1 · 22/07/2026 08:10

BMI doesn’t take into account muscle mass. A much better indicator is to measure your waist. Your waist measurement should be half your height which I’m working towards. Another 4 inches should do it.

Sartre · 22/07/2026 08:11

I think it’s crazy just 2.5 stone gain is enough to tip someone into the obese category. I think my BMI was 39 at its highest years ago and I really was massive then. I lost it all within a year - 7 stone - and BMI was down at 23.

I’ve fluctuated over the years but most recently my BMI was 30 so had tipped into obesity even though I only had 2.5 stone to lose to be considered a healthy weight again. I wasn’t massive by any stretch. I don’t carry lots of belly weight so that may be why, it’s always distributed evenly. Not much visceral fat either.

Gettingbysomehow · 22/07/2026 08:13

I was until recently. I am 5 foot 5 and was 15 stone and obese. After mounjaro Im 9 stone and normal weight.

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 22/07/2026 08:14

5ft 4 and 108kg
I eat relatively healthy, not the best but far from the worst lots of veg ect, I'm on my feet all day at work I can hit 30k easily
I just can't shift it
If I really try and cut out carbs and when I was able to run, bad knee, I could get to 97kg but it was constant hunger and a pain to find someone to watch the kids so I could run
Id love to try weight loss jabs but I can't afford them

Sparrowsandbudgies · 22/07/2026 08:18

I am 5ft 6 and 15 stone. I know I need to lose weight. Until about 4 years ago I was always very slim, around 9-10 stone, size 8-10 and then I developed a whole load of autoimmune issues including lupus which means I’ve been on steroids for years now - I also have to take them permanently life long for Addisons disease, and the weight has piled on. I actually feel healthier than when I was slimmer but I suspect that’s just because my health issues were untreated then. I know I need to lose the weight but it’s so hard when you’re disabled and the only joy you get in life is eating crap. 🙈

Personal trainer here who leads and participates in many group exercise classes . Obviously like anyone I’m not immune to wishing I was smaller but objectively speaking if a doctor just looked at me they wouldn’t see any concerns but if they weighed me…when I am low 20s BMI I look ill! Muscle mass isn’t accounted for. I work with a very muscular man and he has no excess fat but is considered overweight by BMI.

BurntBroccoli · 22/07/2026 08:27

It would be helpful if you could post what you eat in a typical day. Plus how much exercise you do (or don’t do). How many steps have you averaged (the health app on your phone will probably tell you).

Ah, but they could be! That's enough to fuel all the denial we're seeing.

ValueofNothing · 22/07/2026 08:33

I am, according to the BMI. Early 40s, 12 stone and size 14. I'm short though.

Even when I looked thin and was a size 10 my BMI still classed me as overweight. I was very physically active when I was young and I did ask my GP at the time if the fact I was quite muscular and stocky and have big calf muscles might have tipped me over to the overweight category but she very bluntly said no and that I needed to lose weight.

Weirdly my ideal weight according to the BMI is the weight I was pre puberty, and I was a thin child and thin, somewhat muscular teenager. So I've always found that confusing.

Sparklesbigtoe · 22/07/2026 08:36

I was a year ago. I went from 14 stone, bmi 30, size 16, 5’8” to 9st 12lbs, bmi 20, size 10 in the space of a year on Mounjaro. It’s been life changing. I’m so much fitter now, I got back into team sport, I have so much more energy, I’m not uncomfortable & constantly sweaty during hot weather. And one of the best parts - I don’t have to wear those long tight black cotton shorts every day in summer cos my chub rub is so bad! I can even run in short baggy shorts cos inner thigh chaffing is a thing of the past! I’d honestly encourage you to give WLIs ago. They’ll change your life

Yes, BMI is a blunt instrument and should be used responsibly by medical staff in particular.

I guess it’s cheaper than a scan though.

DilemmaDelilah · 22/07/2026 08:43

I was morbidly obese at 16 st 10 lb and 5' 3" . I have lost 2 stone and am now merely obese. I am looking forward to being 'just' overweight.
