My local train station is currently burning down

thehardestpartis · Yesterday 10:44

Reportedly due to children being on the station at 5:45 this morning and setting fire to an equipment cabinet.

AIBU to ask where the hell are the parents?! This will cause chaos in the town, reduce holiday maker visits and just generally worsen an already run down town.

The parents should be punished for arson with intent to endanger life, as should the children.

I am genuinely curious what kind of life these kids must have to be up so early to make trouble.

Late evening, I get it (I don't approve, obviously, but I get it)
that early? I don't know any child who is up.

They've probably been out all night.

When I was a kid some local kids burned down a Tesco superstore 😱 it’s def not new

..and always a spate of school fires..that was one of the children…it’s not new. Just unpleasant

Happyjoe · Yesterday 11:26

We've had 7 wildfires around here, deliberately started. I don't know what's wrong with people, kids and parents. The country has gone to the dogs.

MajorProcrastination · Yesterday 11:27

At 5.45am I'd guess most of the parents would be in bed? And the children have snuck out. Doesn't mean they're great parents or shit parents.

Bloody heck, where was this?😫😂

Oh my goodness, this has come as a shock. We have just booked a cottage in Paignton, in August, thinking it was part of the Devon ‘Riviera’. I have now read the tripadvisor reviews and very few have anything positive to say about the place. My two DGC, who are coming with us, are autistic and very anxious and I was hoping for somewhere quiet and tranquil.

springvegetables · Yesterday 11:27

Gutted! I used to work in Brixham and we were always in Paignton. Beautiful part of the country. Hope it can be rebuilt quickly

Tabarnak · Yesterday 11:28

Terrible incident.

But I am guessing that 'reports' means local word of mouth? Best see what the police and emergency services say before speculating and putting it all over the internet?

Local news says it was out by 8,31.
Fire at Paignton railway station extinguished as major disruption continues

I hope they can quickly minimise the inevitable disruption.

It depends where you are. The outdoors is lovely.

the towns are shitholes though, just stick to Brixham harbour or Torquay harbour.

Edited

It was still going at 9:30!

Local reports are coming from the people who work there and have seen CCTV.

Shit ones, generally.

Down here it’s so rife. Parents who don’t care about education, kids running wild all hours of the day. You get it on the buses from about 7am, and then again at 4pm onwards. They’re vile.

we have troubled kids around, who hasn't, but they are known to be around late. Parents clearly don't care to give a time for home, or don't want to see them.

Thankfully, they are all invisible in the morning and don't restart trouble until midday.

If they started to be around at any time of the day and night bullying and assaulting people, it would become unbearable. What a mess

It is no worse than other towns with such issues. There are quiet places and lovely beaches. Paignton Zoo is great. The Goodrington beach park and pond area. Splashdown QUaywest pools. Adventure golf seafront. Torquay Dinosaur WOrld. Pennywell Farm.
You WILL have fun

ElizaSchuyler · Yesterday 11:32

That's awful. I've used Paignton station several times when I have been on holiday in the area.

The school holidays have only just started. We need the weather to change.

What has the weather got to do with it? Parents need to parent and not let their kids be vile brats. There’s no excuse for this behaviour

Blaming weather instead of blaming the parents is wild

They probably won’t even be charged

@OhMelons please don’t blame gentle parenting for this. Gentle parenting doesn’t mean no consequences (although that’s a common misconception).

I’ve called 999 once in my life when a group of children had got into a building site and were climbing the scaffolding. I wasn’t worried about them causing damage, I was worried about them dying… police wouldn’t come out.

It’s not always as simple as blaming the parents.

glitterpaperchain · Yesterday 11:50

Maybe if we hadn't spent the last decades closing down all kind of support services for parents and youth, we wouldn't be seeing so much youth crime

Jenkibuble · Yesterday 11:50

AWFUL !

As PP have stated, gentle parenting results / no or poor consequences will result in adults who are the same.

Which is why prisons are bulging !

Where I live, you can tell the kids are off , but its just cycling erratically (wheelies on busy roads) . Early days of course !
6 weeks to go !

Gentle parenting is the cause though. It’s just a fact.

If 11-15 year old were doing arson at that time in the morning - not a time most parents let their kids roam - I'd expect SS and the police to be asking questions of parents or care givers (with no idea who the suspects are do we know they are in the care of parents at all?) and take any action they can.

Persoanally only parents I know whoes kids might be out those hours were already known to SS and there was a lot going on in the families and with the kids.
