AIBU to wonder why Burnham attracts so much negativity?

Why is there so much negativity towards politicians and Burnham in particular? Burnham hasn’t really done anything yet but so many on here appear to hate him.

I agree that politics has been a shambles recently but what’s the alternative?

Personally I feel a degree of optimism that we may have a PM that actually turns things around for us.

I really dislike the way he's come to power. The undermining Starmer, the MP "agreeing" to step down, the abandoning what he promised to do for Manchester.

I hope he'll be a good PM, but I don't like "him".

I’ve no opinion on AB at the moment.

But on the steps of 10 Downing Street he said yesterday that there has been 6 PM in ten years , the 7th since 2016.

Yes Andy ,but you’re also to blame for that too..

Paul2023 · 21/07/2026 16:35

Trouble is, they could have brought in Andy Burnham a year before the GE. They’ve done it too early in my opinion.

Andy B now has three years to get Labour voters back and steer them away from other parties- such as Reform or Greens

If Andy B doesn’t deliver by the next GE, there’s a good chance those voters will be so fed up they may go to other parties.

If Labour don’t deliver , they can’t blame it on Starmer because he’s now gone. Andy is Labours ace card and they’ve played him too early.

He has a ten year plan. That only works if he wins the next GE.

'Sunak was unopposed in the leadership election'

He was the chancellor! He had current, relevant experience. This imposter Burnham manufacturered the whole thing with his backstabbing pals. He's gone from metro mayor to the top job even wheeling out Angela who resigned in disgrace only a few months ago.

I've no idea how the media are not obliterating this upstart.

Who is he <in nikki Grahame's voice > springs to mind.

the80sweregreat · 21/07/2026 17:19

I tend to agree that the whole thing was a stitch up from the start. I know this is how it goes , but it feels wrong. On the other hand, Sir Keir Starmer looked the happiest I’ve seen him in ages yesterday. Probably glad he isn’t working with the back stabbers any more!

Yes he knew they'd all turned on him and was pleased to get away.

How long will grinning Andy last until the next one decides to oust him for their own gain. I bet Rayner has a plan..

the80sweregreat · 21/07/2026 17:25

The country wouldn’t accept Angela Raynor I’m afraid.
I do think that wouid be a step too far really.

the80sweregreat · 21/07/2026 17:25

Rayner rather , sorry

It's not undemocratic. I hold no brief for Burnham and I am sorry Starmer went, as I think he has been unfairly blamed for some things and vilified for his personality, but he did make some catastrophically stupid decisions - e.g. appointing Mandelson, scrapping the winter fuel payment without a good PR strategy to point out that it wasn't means tested, a lot of the recipients didn't need it and poorer pensioners would still be getting it.

Burnham was an MP under Blair and Brown who served as a Minister and Cabinet Minister before 2010. He remained in Parliament for some years after that and was in the Shadow Cabinet. He has then had another elected office as Mayor of Greater Manchester. Now he's an MP again. It's not as if they've catapulted somebody in who's never had any political experience at all.

Edited

How could they not realise the importance of good PR though? It just seems so BASIC.

Not sure her ego is aware.

There is an old 70s song called ‘ the backstabbers’
Sums up most political issues well.

I was shocked when Louise Haigh told the BBC that they had been working with Burnham for over a year to execute this. There are three of them that had plenty of time on their hands to plot and perfect as they had had to step down from ministerial roles. This includes Haigh when her criminal conviction was exposed, Rayner for breaking the ministerial code and Josh Simons (the Makerfield MP) for the think tank he was involved in smearing journalists.

It's a bit daft when posters say that's the way it works in this country. Yes we know it is legal and constitutional but it is still plotting to seize power by stealth.

I know! Mumsnet is awash with people moaning that their elderly parents don't need the winter fuel payment and use it to pay for cruises or they donate it to charity. Now, MN may not be representative, but I think the stats do show that there are a lot of pensioners who are not struggling. What the government needed to do was to get that message out there and really push the availability of Pension Credit for the older people who do need it.

MrsGaryMcNumanface · 21/07/2026 17:39

The cabinet he has appointed looks like more of the same. Labour Friends of Israel. Drilling in the North Sea whilst the planet combusts. He's less soulless than Starmer but I'm not holding my breath to see any real changes any time soon.

SourdoughSally · 21/07/2026 17:41

It's because the entire media are right wing and therefore everything you read or watch will be slagging him off. And people believe it.

Dragonscaledaisy · 21/07/2026 17:47

Meckrel · 21/07/2026 10:14

The thing that frustrates me about this (and democracy perhaps?) is that Starmer was forced to step down because he was unpopular, not because he was doing a bad job. Most ordinary people who didn't like him can't say what it is he was doing wrong, they'd essentially been told by the right wing press machine they weren't supposed to like him.

People were sick of the fact that he was doing a terrible job. Added to that he was weak, spineless and lacking integrity. Nothing to do with the media. Starmer was the master of his own demise. Everything he got wrong has been listed time and time again.

How have they played him too early? if Andy Burnham is the messiah Labour is claiming him to be surely the sooner he was made PM the better to rescue the sorry mess left by Starmer. Or are you suggesting he'll be no better and when voters realise this well before the next GE, they've run out of options to fool the public?

BrandiedAromatics · 21/07/2026 17:53

Burnham has already caused confusion with his pledge of a VAT cut to electricity bills. I do think that we have to look very carefully at the wording of his government as to me the following is a cop out, without admitting a mistake over funding. It is a lot of words to not give an accurate account:

Downing Street has insisted Burnham’s plan to cut VAT from electricity bills for six months from October is "fully funded".

The government previously said the £1.8bn cost would be paid for by scrapping Keir Starmer's planned digital ID scheme - but Labour MP Darren Jones, newly sacked from the cabinet, says that programme was "unfunded".

When it's put to the PM's spokesperson that the cut is being funded through unidentified savings, he says: "Departments were going to have to fund the Digital ID programme through their existing budget reprioritisation.

"Departments will now direct these savings towards this. (BBC)

People want miracles, and they want them NOW. Boris Johnson was constantly promising miracles, and people loved him for it. And when he shit the bed with Partygate (and much more, to my mind), people pleaded “don’t get rid of him, he’s so funny!” As Burnham is not promising miracles, people are thinking “what is there to be excited about?”.

Make politics and politicians boring again.

There isn't that much negativity towards Burnham apart from those who hate Labour so much they actually want him to fail. He has an exceptionally high approval rating for a new PM, and had already seen working class support drift from Reform by 3.6 perventage points.
You need to remember that the people who are criticising him on SM are those highly motivated to portray him poorly. They are mainly ardent Conservatives or Reform voters who would prefer to see the country fail under Burnham to give their own party a chance than back him to succeed.
In the absence of evidence he is failing, given its day 2, they fall back on attacking his character, his clothes, accent, his wife's appearance, and their doom mongering predictions of what he'll do wrong.
There are also some within Labour who are unhappy Starmer has been replaced.

I'm sorry but I disagree with this. I voted Labour at the last election, have a great local Labour MP in a marginal seat but I would really struggle to vote for the party again because of the way that this was done. I think the saying is "it's just not cricket". It makes it difficult to trust those who did it with the important job of running the country. This may backfire for Labour in the long run.

I think it will depend entirely on whether people feel he has improved things for them. If they see things getting better, then that coupled with his people skills would ensure he stays popular.

Just watching the cabinet meeting with golden ticket imposter Burnham holding court. There's only Yvette cooper who doesn't seem to be that taken by the whole thing, giving him a bit of a steely side eye but I may be wrong.

God now Wes giving a speech as defence secretary it's all just toe curling.

I don't want miracles I just find the way he has gone from mayor to PM preposterous. It is surely a snap shot of his underhand ways. All his backstabbing posse in the media snaps Confused.
