To think this detention timing is ridiculous?

DS4 got a detention at school today.
It has been arranged for the 4th September.

Nope. It just says what type of detention it is, which teacher gave it and when it is.

I have emailed and asked in the past. Or he tells me. He is adamant he doesn't know what it's for this time.

He does get quite a few detentions, mostly for talking in class. He's autistic and has an ADHD assessment coming later this year.

I don't believe that he doesn't know what he did.

It’s not about convenience, it’s about timing. Whatever he did is either serious enough to be dealt with immediately, or it’s not really , in which case what’s the point giving it 5 weeks later?

Definitely email in and find out what it is. Depending on what he actually did , I’d argue for an immediate one or cancelling altogether.

It obviously isnt working anyway if he is getting repeat detentions so its a moot point anyway.

That does seem weird, what did he do? A detention in September for something minor like uniform or missing homework seems odd. Dc may have even forgotten what the detention was for by then, the school may not even remember either rendering it pointless. If it was something a little more serious, then surely it’s better to get the punishment out the way and have a clean slate for September. It does seem like a weird move from the school.

That’s bizarre that you don’t get a reason for the detentions, my dc’s school doesn’t give specific details but will use generic terms like “missing homework” without saying what subject it was for but it’s enough and we can email for more info. It’s not an amazing system but sounds better than what you have. I would be contacting them before the end of term to find out what the detention was for.

With that update I actually do think September would be the better time. They can remind him what it was he did that resulted in the detention and encourage him to change his behaviour going into the new school year. If he does the detention now, it sounds like he will have forgotten about it by the time schools go back.

Perhaps you could focus on why your child got a detention at all, or did you want teachers to give up their break to supervise a detention?

If he did something that’s worthy of a detention then it is better that it is given even though it’s the end of term than not at all. Consistency is important.

At this time of year there may not have been staff available to supervise detention. Everyone is busy getting ready for next year. Detentions aren’t supposed to be conveniently timed for the recipients and their parents.

As a teacher this is stupid. It should be this week. Not start of September. New school year should be a fresh start!

We don’t do detentions. Absolutely ridiculous concept. Just tell them he won’t be there. There’s nothing they can do to enforce it.

Might focus the teachers mind on what’s important is chatting in class really worthy of detaining somebody 🙄

How old is he? I see not 4, but presumably at least 12 if he’s remaining at the same school and getting detentions?

Idk my DS aged 12 also has ADHD but if he were to get a detention he would tell me why as he couldn’t help himself!

I always say to my two that detentions are between them and the school - unless there’s so really outrageous circumstance. All they have to do is go to the detention and then it’s done - they’re not real that onerous!

It won't be just chatting. It will be chatting when supposed to be listening, distracting others, disrupting the learning. And yes, that is worthy of detention.

I’d be furious with my child not the school. If they can’t do it this term, tough on your son.

The OP has at no point suggested he shouldn't do the detention merely expressed how ridiculous it is to have it hanging over him for over a month.

Of course it isn’t, especially since he gets them quite frequently.
If they were that terrifying he might try harder to avoid them.

And don't they have to give a week's notice in some schools? Presumably for appointments etc, or if parents need to rearrange collections/afterschool care (which some still use at high school).

Every child should start the new year with a clean slate. I wouldn’t be happy with this at all.
