AIBU to want the bathroom replaced in stages, not all at once?

Our bathroom needs to be replaced.
I’m of the opinion that we should do it in bits- sink and toilet ( which we’ve already purchased) done one day and then get the bath tub done another day or 2. Then tiling separately.
The tradespeople who do the tiling will be different anyway.
I really want to minimise the possibility of not having bathing facilities for a while. We’ve teen DC

DH wants it all done in one go and says we’ll manage with downstairs WC

Don’t drag it out, just rip the plaster off.

Mine took 3 days for a refit and floor to ceiling tiles. We managed without having another toilet.

We’re doing ours in 3 weeks, all in one go. Ripping out and putting bits in only takes 2 days. Speak to the plumber about priorities to it’s usable. Messing around with bits on didn’t days could mean a plumber ends up booking 2 jobs as there’s not enough for a full day and just means it takes longer overall.

Team DH here. When my neighbours had theirs done we let them use our shower, can you shower elsewhere ?

I think most fitters will make sure you have a functioning loo at the end of each day.

TBH, I would rather they just cracked on and got it done, but I hate having people in the house doing things, so want as short a time as possible of that. Also, you'll probably be paying them by the day, so it's better if they can work in the most efficient way for them - doing X when Y is drying or whatever.

they should always leave you with a working toilet and usually get that working as the very first job

Finding reliable tradespeople is difficult. They’ll do it to fit their schedule, not yours.

Having renovated 3 houses, absolutely do it all at the same time.

Get it done all at once. You don't really get your bathroom back by splitting it up.

everyone shower on day 1, if you have a downstairs loo/sink you can have a sink wash for a few days. That’s if you don’t have a neighbour/family member locally/friends/gym membership/swimming pool with showering facilities anywhere nearby. We’ve had people
round to shower for a few days when they’ve been without a bathroom, we certainly never minded. we also made the most of our gym membership when we did ours and went there daily.

Another vote for getting it all done at once.
You'll get a much better finish overall, if you let them crack on and do it rather than faffing about with bits here and there.
The last thing you want is some of your new fittings being damaged as they endeavour trying to rip out more old stuff.

Won't you have to have it done how and when the unicorn who is a tradesperson tells you? Which could be over several weeks, involving many false starts, disappearances for other jobs and tears of gratitude on your part when you have a flushing toilet by day 5?
Seriously, let them do it in the order they think fastest with you and your family out of the way as much as possible. If you can arrange to be on a short break while it's done, all the better.

Sorry to butt in on this but will they really leave you with a functioning toilet each day? I’m looking at having my bathroom done. At the moment I don’t know how long it would take? But it’s my only bathroom so was assuming I would have to move out for a couple of weeks! But perhaps not? Would really welcome peoples experiences! Hopefully getting prospective fitter’s round soon

They will need to use the toilet themselves so will have it working. Unless you are one of the people on MN who refuse to let tradespeople use their loo so they will never connect it

we had a total refit- walls, floor, moving the sink and towel rail around. 5 days total. Always with a working loo at the end of each day and one half day for some snagging.

Could you arrange to have it done whilst you go away for a few days/holiday for a week? I agree all in one go is better.

Yours sounds like a fairly simple job so probably a few days work. We’ve just had ours done. We were away on holiday for a fortnight and it took that whole time to get it done but was a big job. We’d have never coped for that long without a toilet and shower.

Although I had to wait 24 hours after they had finished before I could empty the bath of water and have a bath/shower. I wasn’t expecting that but wasn’t an issue

Plumbers are mega busy and will want to do all the plumbing at once, so I'd be amazed if they'd agree to doing it on different days as you suggest. Have you asked them about this as I think they'll set the timeline and you won't get much of a say tbh.

All at the same time. So much easier for the trades and therefore quicker.

Your post shows you have no idea how the works are sequenced. Do it all in one go.

Definitely all in one go, would be a major pain to string it out and doubt you’ll be able to find tradespeople who want to do it piecemeal.

YABU. Your DH is right; you are wrong. It'll be a shorter time of mess & chaos, rather than a drawn out period of mess & chaos.

Even if you do it bit by bit, you're not going to be able to use your bathroom anyway, and it's so much easier & you'll get a far better job just doing it all in one go.

It will cost more if you have trades coming in and out, not able to crack on and do their bits. If your not moving things around just replacing it could all be functioning again by the evening. Then it's just tiling and painting. A stand up wash with a flannel at the kitchen sink won't hurt anyone for one day.

It's hard to do it bit by bit. That makes it messy.

If you are going to re do a bathroom, you should really rip it all out and re do the waterproofing.

Agree with husband just get it done in one.

You can rent a chemical toilet if you have somewhere to put it.
