AIBU to wonder if coughing up blood means going to A&E?

If you cough up pure blood shoud you go a and e? About 10 tablespoons

Did you cough up the blood or vomit up the blood. Yak I know, I don't want to scare you but as a pp has said my husband too died after vomiting blood. But either way I don't think they should have sent you home. Go to your GP but if it happens again ring for ambulance.

coughed it up. It’s madness that I showed the doctor and he was like well it’s not a blood clot so we aren’t concerned ? Even tho I showed him the photo and had to wait 12 hours in a and e????? It’s scary :(

The 12 hours is just par for the course.

The important thing is whether the treatment/investigations were right.

Did you ask them what else might have caused it and whether you should follow up with GP? Try looking on NHS app ... their conclusions should be there so you can see what has gone to GP.

They said it wasn’t a blood clot and they wasn’t concerned :( which is madness
I showed them the photo of the blood and he was like ahhh yes a lot of
blood but the bloody clot test showed negative so no problem! I was thinking yes I’m glad it showed negative but surely there was. A huge reason why I coughed up so much red blood for it not to be anything ? :(

DD is in medicine and its been made clear that A & E in her hospital really does need to stand for Accident or Emergency.

Thats not to say that it isnt serious, but unless whatever is causing the patients issue is immediately life threatening, then send them home to see their GP. She and her colleagues hate it but they are being overwhelmed with people trying to get a GP appointment (or in many cases, not even trying) and showing up with issues that are not what A&E is for. I know a lot of people say "Oh wont bother trying to get an appointment, its quicker to just go to A&E", and her hospital are trying to discourage this.

@TheOpalFox what investigations did you get?
Was it just a D-dimer blood test? Were you given any physical examinations?
Did you have a scope to look at your oesophagus?

Did you have a chest xray? Blood tests for infection markers and white blood cells?

It is likely you have an esophageal lesion or an ulcer. If you are coughing up blood this can haemorrhage and it is absolutely a medical emergency. You need endoscopic test asap

My dad cough up over a pint of blood. He had throat cancer. It was terrifying at the time. He was lucky I found him when I did.
his gp had dismissed his symptoms (before the blood) as an infection and he was given antibiotics which obviously did eff all to help

It's rather off your symptom has been dismissed like that. Has any imaging been done? Blood tests for inflammation?
