It could be bleeding varisces. That's a category A emergency for my health board, ie you would need to be in theatre in under an hour if that's what's going on.

I coughed up far less than that and it was a blood clot on my lung. I should have gone to hospital the first time it happened but I was away from home and didn't realise how potentially serious it was. (Note: pulmonary embolism doesn't always present with the additional red flag symptoms it says on Google.) I was fortunate and survived it sitting in my lung for 10 weeks before being detected but something awful like 1/3 of lung clots are discovered post mortem.

Has the bleeding stopped? Did they suggest any next steps or any other reasons why it might have happened?

Was it a one off thing? Has it happened before? It must have been terrifying

They have established that the most dangerous thing is not there - phew! - and now you need to see your GP to follow up and discuss whether there needs to be further investigations to establish the cause.

Ok can you phone your GP tomorrow and try to ask if further tests should have been run? Or dial 111?

Have you been confused since the 18th? If you have a pulse oximeter at home, check your SpO2. If you haven't got one but do have a fitness tracker, wear it overnight and check your SpO2 a few hours after you get up.

Or ... <hopeful> ... had you eaten a lot of beetroot on the day you coughed up blood??

No more blood but i showed the doctor the photo of the blood. Grim I know but it was like they didn’t take me serious :(
