To not understand showering before swimming?

Shewas · 16/07/2026 16:01

I understand people should be clean before getting in a pool, but I don't understand what a poolside shower, a few seconds at most, is washing off? No one's washing the bits most likely to be dirty!

I'm just back from a swim session. I always do stand under the shower long enough to pook like I've been in, but more because I'm embarrassed not to than because I think there's a point. Most people don't even do that.

Apart from the hygiene reasons above, I've read that if your hair is saturated with water before you get in the pool, the chlorine and other chemicals are less able to penetrate it so it's better for your hair.

My hairdresser told me this this morning! Apparently to do with dry hair being more porous and absorbing the chlorine. She said for extra protection you can run a little conditioner through the hair after wetting, although I’m not sure I’d feel good getting in the pool and having that leach out!

Never noticed any dust mites

They're microscopic. Not seeing them doesn't mean they're not there.

I've been in some swimming pools overseas where there's a fierce-looking attendant whose job is to sit in the shower area between changing room and pools, and there are infographic posters showing human figures with clouds of soap bubbles around each armpit, groin and foot and if the attendant doesn't see you vigorously generating an appropriate cloud of lather in each place they make you go back and try again before you can go through to the pool.

JFC that’s crazy! What if you don’t believe in soaping your muff?!!!

When we’re living in a global drought will you be glad you did that?

I'm not sure it's .necessary to remove sweat unless you've come straight from a gym session (not talking holiday pools here).

If they are so fussy about sweat, lotions etc why aren't they more fussy about wearing swimming hats? The drains must get so blocked.

BillieWiper · 16/07/2026 18:51

Surely it's to wash off residual dust and dirt the person has accidentally accumulated. Then afterwards it washes the chemicals off you.

Would you rather people just went in a shared giant bath covered in dust?

gil890 · 16/07/2026 18:51

everyone needs to shower to wash off hair products, deodorants, perfumes. I hate having to swim through these smells in the water .

I’d be happy to get in this pool!

Most people have awful personal hygiene. It's really the least they could do.

Sherararara · 16/07/2026 20:46

SunnyRedSnail · 16/07/2026 17:14

Yes! You're supposed to every month!

You shed millions of skin cells which then means you get dust mites living in your mattress!!

If you've never done it, go do it! Bet its super gross if you have a baileys vacuum!!

Eewwwww! You mean you don’t have a mattress protector that you take off and wash? Gross!

Sherararara · 16/07/2026 20:47

WerewolfOfLoudon · 16/07/2026 18:10

I have a dedicated mattress vacuum, my topper is machine washable and so are the duvets. All done every 4 - 6 weeks roughly. Sheets, duvet cover and pillowcases every couple of weeks (which apparently is gross to not do it weekly)

I may have a problem 😳

You think.

Sherararara · 16/07/2026 20:51

I wet vacuum my mattress every day before making my bed.

I also vaccum myself and the children all over before entering the pool.

Never can be too sure.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/07/2026 20:56

HostaCentral · 16/07/2026 17:15

No. I don't sleep directly on my mattress!

I have a mattress cover and a sheet......

I also don't wash my duvet very often, once a year, and it's over twenty years old......

Edited

I wash my duvets once per season. I vacuum my mattress from time to time, basically only if vacuuming day coincides with sheet changing day. It's important for me because I'm allergic to dust mites. If you don't have such an allergy, it's less important.

My mattress is a few years old now so full of the faecal matter of dust mites anyway by virtue of being old.

I sleep standing up, naked. It's fine in this heat, not sure what I'll do in Winter, probably go to Southern Hemisphere or something.

Swimming hats are compulsory in some countries.

SunnyRedSnail · 16/07/2026 16:08

Let me guess... you don't vacuum your mattress either?

Its removing dead skin cells, hair etc...

No I don’t.

I shower in the morning (unless I’m going swimming in the morning, then yes I’ll give it a miss, so shoot me). I’ll then shower after swimming to wash chlorine off. I’m not showering a 3rd time. My skins dry enough thanks.

LotusMandala · 16/07/2026 21:04

Can someone please explain the logistics of hoovering my mattress with an upright hoover? Do I stand on the bed with the hoover?

This is revolutionary stuff and I’m off to ask my mum why I was never shown this absolute peak batshittery.

idril · 16/07/2026 21:08

Partly acclimatisation for me but mainly to saturate my hair with water to stop it absorbing so much chlorine (I also add conditioner so not really in the spirit of removing lotions!).

goldtrap · 16/07/2026 16:47

😱Soooo happy I have my own pool (piss-free zone).

I also have a Ool because there’s no P in it

They're microscopic. Not seeing them doesn't mean they're not there.

But why does it matter if they are there if they don't affect you

whirlyhead · 16/07/2026 21:19

I have a pool which I look after myself, so I’m aware that i need to shower before going in mainly to wash off sunscreen. The water quality deteriorates really quickly if you don’t, and having just spent 3 weeks pouring chemicals in my pool to get over an algae issue, I’m not risking anything to undo my hard work! Anyone who wants to use my pool is definitely having a shower before they get in it.

We always throw a few tennis balls in after the children have been in with sun scream residue on. Pressure wash the filter and a fast dose of extra chlorine for overnight.

Who said I don't?

I will rephrase: what's the point for those of us who have no allergies

I use an upright vacuum- but it’s cordless and can be ‘reclined’ back a really long way so I just pop it on the mattress and stand next to the bed. Our bed is particularly low which helps. I only do it a couple of times a year. Also have mattress protector which gets washed every few months, and sheets washed weekly. Similar to what PP said- if I happen to be hoovering and changing the mattress protector on the same day, then the mattress gets a hoovering.

I never wash my duvet, so once a year is a lot to me.

Many years ago, I was a lifeguard in a pool that was not deck level. One of the tasks was cleaning the scum line from the pool walls. That is why people should shower before going in.
