To not understand showering before swimming?

I understand people should be clean before getting in a pool, but I don't understand what a poolside shower, a few seconds at most, is washing off? No one's washing the bits most likely to be dirty!

I'm just back from a swim session. I always do stand under the shower long enough to pook like I've been in, but more because I'm embarrassed not to than because I think there's a point. Most people don't even do that.

But it's the dingleberries that need to be removed . . .

I really had no idea! I'll be doing that this weekend!

This thread has taught me that I have much bigger cleanliness issues than showering before swimming 😳

Surely no one sleeps directly on a mattress anymore?! I have a really thick mattress topper that I wash regularly and replace when it’s old.

I always shower before I enter the pool. It’s to thoroughly wet my hair so it doesn’t absorb too much chlorine water.

I shower thoroughly and wash my hair before I get in, in the changing room showers.
Then after my swim, I just rinse off the chlorine.

I never have. I didn't know it was a thing.

I have a dedicated mattress vacuum, my topper is machine washable and so are the duvets. All done every 4 - 6 weeks roughly. Sheets, duvet cover and pillowcases every couple of weeks (which apparently is gross to not do it weekly)

Edited to add, it’s compulsory to shower naked, with the attendant monitoring how thoroughly you are washing

Standing under a shower in your costume for a few seconds is pretty pointless but showering properly in the changing room showers so you are naked and can get properly clean is far from pointless. This is the rule in my country and it keeps things much cleaner.

Now I know why I hate swimming, and glad I don't anymore. Too much faff altogether.

There was a poo at the bottom of my local pool recently 🫠🫠 hazard of having (I assume!) the kids section joined with the adults section!

Ahhh.... In the good old days, the swimming pool did not change it's water for decades, no-one showered before or after and I had "chlorine eyes" for hours after!

Yep, been to many a Northern European Council baths and the attendants sit in shower areas making sure you have a proper wash - head, pits and bits!

A mattress topper will stop the dust mites going onto the mattress but skin cells are tiny. You can shed 1 kg to 3 kg of dead skin cells a year!

That's why you wash a mattress tipper every month at least as it is caked in skin cells!!

If your mattress topper is a decent quality anti-allergy one then it should stop skin cells going through.

So it's generally good practice to vacuum a mattress.

People who don’t go under the shower are grim . You can smell their unwashed hair smell when they’re in the pool .
