How can people not care for their animals?

We have a new neighbour who moved in a few months ago who has a guinea pig. I get on well with the neighbour and we have socialised. However, she doesn’t look after the guinea pig. I can see it from my garden and it’s never fed nor cleaned out. I’ve hinted at it and she says she doesn’t care about it 😔 she’s basically waiting for it to die! I offered to look after it myself and she skirted around it.

I said again how we would love a guinea pig shall we take it for you and she just kind of ignored me!

However, over the last two weeks it hasn’t been cleaned out and I hear it squealing. When I know she’s gone out to work (she works in a care home and leaves the same time every day) I sneak in and feed it! However I only give it greens and veggies etc.

I’ve now noticed its food bowl of pellets is empty and it has no hay at all either and hasn’t for days. I then went and got some hay and food and have been sneaking that in too! I feel so sorry for it as I’d give it a lovely home and let it run on the grass etc.. this one never comes out at all.

I don’t know what else I can do though? I know he has some annual leave soon so won’t be leaving at the same time for me to sneak in the garden! What would you do?! I genuinely feel so upset for the poor baby!

Me too, or just take it and say nothing. Mine lived until 8 yrs old when kept indoors. Maybe get him/her a little friend and if any squeaking is heard, you can show her the photo of just your one piggie. Please rescue this one, I hate any type of cruelty to animals

So there would be people doing checks? Or are are we going to rely on people like the OP? If the former, who is going to pay these people? What is going to happen to the animal when the licence has been removed? Where will it be taken? Who will care for it?

Sorry but my belief is we will never stop animal cruelty while one animal continues to dominate this planet. Not that I am saying we should not try to limit it but I can't see how a licence is going to help with that.

The RSPCA are useless. They are only interested in headlines. One Guinea pig won’t interest them at all.

Nobody is blackening the name of the RSPCA. It's done that to itself.

They get so many donations because people think they actually do stuff but they barely do.

Only if they can get in the papers, on the news or have a tv crew following them only the worst of the worst will they bother with.

So save your donations for the small charity’s that actually give a fuck 👍🏻

I wish they actually did stuff for the random one animal. But making people think oh call the rspca and the animal will be saved is the stuff of fairy tales in most cases.

How about you tell her that you will need to take in your friend/cousins guinea pig for some plausible reason, but are worried about it being lonely, so could she please help you out by letting her piggy stay over to keep it company?

If she agrees you will need to source a second guinea pig for your cover story, but you probably would have anyway, as they shouldn't live alone.

No, I can't understand either how some people can be so uncaring and neglect their pets. In this case I would have to say, look it's upsetting me to see your guinea pig neglected, just let me have it!

Every minute you are dithering, that poor, starving creature is suffering. I could definitely not watch that happening and not intervene.

If she doesn't feed it, she won't notice if it's missing...

They shouldn't be eating commercial food anyway. They need mostly hay, and a small amount of fresh veg (a strip of red pepper every day is a good source of vitamin C, and they love it).

And make sure you don't keep them on wood shavings/sawdust, it can cause respiratory and liver issues. We used hemp horse bedding for our rescued guinea pigs.

Please OP, people are rightly very concerned. Please update us. You can't delay, this innocent life needs you.

I actually saw her cleaning him out and feeding him the other day which made me happy. I’ve then been creeping in when she isn’t home and adding more hay and food and greens. I know I should report but I don’t think they’ll do anything if say they visited when he’s been fed and also she will know it’s me, so the repercussions for my son at school wouldn’t be ideal!

I will continue for now and ask again when I see her if she wants us to have him as I think she may have a holiday planned soon! So it’s the ideal time!!
