How can people not care for their animals?

We have a new neighbour who moved in a few months ago who has a guinea pig. I get on well with the neighbour and we have socialised. However, she doesn’t look after the guinea pig. I can see it from my garden and it’s never fed nor cleaned out. I’ve hinted at it and she says she doesn’t care about it 😔 she’s basically waiting for it to die! I offered to look after it myself and she skirted around it.

I said again how we would love a guinea pig shall we take it for you and she just kind of ignored me!

However, over the last two weeks it hasn’t been cleaned out and I hear it squealing. When I know she’s gone out to work (she works in a care home and leaves the same time every day) I sneak in and feed it! However I only give it greens and veggies etc.

I’ve now noticed its food bowl of pellets is empty and it has no hay at all either and hasn’t for days. I then went and got some hay and food and have been sneaking that in too! I feel so sorry for it as I’d give it a lovely home and let it run on the grass etc.. this one never comes out at all.

I don’t know what else I can do though? I know he has some annual leave soon so won’t be leaving at the same time for me to sneak in the garden! What would you do?! I genuinely feel so upset for the poor baby!

I'd report to the RSPCA, that's beyond cruel! They'll visit, as I reported an acquaintance who had a dog and wasn't looking after it properly. It was anonymous, they visited the property, and the advice needed was given to them which saved the dog from suffering.

Word it as though she is doing you a favour – you've always wanted a guinea pig and you've fallen in love with her's and could you please buy it off her? She can visit as often as she likes...

People really need to stop banging on about the RSPCA. They are really are no better than a chocolate teapot when it comes to animal cruelty.

I think take the poor GP if you can OP or talk to your neighbour and make it clear you are not taking no for an answer. Good on you btw. Good to hear you care and are taking action in the world where 'not my circus, not my monkeys' seem to be how most people think.

When I reported an acquaintance, I did it without giving my name and they still visited the property.

I think people like yourself and other posters should stop bad mouthing the RSPCA.

Unless you can suggest other organisations to report animal cruelty too then discouraging people to report to the RSPCA is beyond irresponsible.

And advocating that people resort to stealing is down right wrong.

Other animal welfare charities that can do actual outreach on the ground work are usually area dependent, so there’s no point randomly suggesting any when we don’t know OP’s location.

In my experience the RSPCA are awful. I'm with you on that.

Yeh just nick him, if she asks just say you got your own guinea pig, it’s not a lie! He’s yours now! How can she not feed him and walk past? So cruel. I’d be fuming.

I agree, make it look like a fox got to it. Then just hide it when the son comes round. You don't know how old it is I presume? They don't live that long so you may not have it for years anyhow.

I couldn’t stand by and watch any animal being abused . Id tell the owner straight to either relinquish its care to me or I’ll call the RSPCA and put it all over Facebook to shame them .

Thank you for reporting the animal. The fact that they followed up your report shows that they do indeed focus on helping animals.

I think it’s about 3-4 and given the other one died as they were from the same litter, who knows how long this one has left. Knowing my luck I’d rescue it and give the poor thing a heart attack!

In the circumstances I’d have no interest in not upsetting someone who neglects an animal. Offer to take the guinea pig and give it a home, but make it clear if she refuses the offer you will be reporting her to the RSCPA. Hopefully she’ll do the right thing.

I am not joining in the argument but RSPCA and Blue Cross the ones at the top have the money and they are often loathe to do what they should.
We used to have a guinea pig rescue is there one near you? To let this creature starve to death is awful. Kidnap it and let the poor thing have a decent life

Put a wine box on its side in the cage and it will run in - then you can lift it out carefully. Wine boxes are just the right size and shape for a guinea pig hidey 😂

Ask around about small animal charities local to you and then steal it and hand it over to them.

Because I see her every day like 2-3 times and our sons are in the same year at school. I don’t want to fall out with her. My DH thinks I’m being weird worrying about it so much although agrees it’s cruel!

Yes just take it , keep.it as an indoor piggy and deny all knowledge

Two choices, either steal it and rehome elsewhere or offer her money for it. Be upfront and direct and tell her you will buy it from her.

But maybe the better choice is to steal and rehome and I would do so quickly. Poor creature.
