AIBU to ask whether you own a Bible?

Just idle curiosity, really.

We often hear right-wingers insisting "This is a Christian country", whether we're in UK, Oz or the US etc.

So I'm wondering how many of us actually own Bibles, and whether we ever read them. I did read assorted bits of it in my youth, but don't currently own a Bible.

YABU: Whether Mumsnetters own Bibles or not is none of your business.

YANBU: It's a vaguely interesting question.

I think Jonah is funny, him going around Jerusalem preaching about God, then God showing up and telling him the gig is too easy and he should head off to the north east and preach in Nineveh and Jonah responding by turning south west and hopping on a boat for Spain, then preaching to the sailors who all convert, but then chuck him overboard when God indicates his displeasure, then getting eaten by a sea monster that suffers horrible indigestion and barfs him up again . . . .

Great fun all round.

I know I'm weird but I also smile at the bit of the New Testament where people are trying to find out if John the Baptist is the Messiah. They keep on and on asking him and he just keeps on repeating 'No - I am NOT!' I don't know why, but that tickles me as very Monty Pythonish.

sanityisamyth · Today 18:03

Definitely not.

It doesn't matter though, whether they think it counts - whether we're a culturally Christian country is a matter of fact, not a matter of opinion.

Our whole calendar, Bank Hols, festivals etc are related to Christianity.

And our values system too.

TheWytch · Today 18:22

We have DH's huge antique family bible somewhere which will probably end up in a village museum due to the names recorded in it.

That is probably it.

Snoff · Today 18:27

No, I don't own a bible, and have no interest in reading one.

11AndCounting · Today 18:28

No, don't own one, though did read parts of it when I was younger.

I do sometimes watch summaries of bits of it, online, and do find it fascinatingly grim (the Old Testament is pretty horrible).

Pllystyrene · Today 18:29

I think there's probably around 4 in our house. Children's illustrated one I got as a child, one I got given when I left highschool and my children got given one each in Primary.

Love Jordan Petersons thoughts on religion

Does he really have "thoughts" though? Isn't it more knee-jerk emotional/resentful stuff, and quite shallow?

I have a Gideon’s bible that I keep in the drawer of a bedside table in the spare room for a laugh. I’m showing my age because I don’t think it’s even a thing any more.

8TinyToeBeans · Today 18:37

Nope, I’m pagan and I have no interest in the bible. I did own ones in my youth cause my auntie is very religious and seemed to think she was saving my soul. 😂
We will at some point inherit my husband’s families bible. But that’s a family heirloom. Nobody actually goes believes it. His sister has baggsied the emergency last rights kit!

AlexFurbison · Today 18:53

I'm an atheist and I have one. I studied it as part of an English Lit degree and kept it, alongside the other works we studied.

CurlewKate · Today 18:55

Yes. Several. And other Holy Books too. I am a lifelong atheist.

LittleSoo · Today 19:00

Lol no. I remember getting a little red on in high school and ones of the lads starting eating the pages from his.

Monty36 · Today 19:00

We do. And read it at times, yes.

ToffeeCrabApple · Today 19:03

Ive got a childrens illustrated bible story book, it was a childhood gift from a religious uncle. I've only still got it because I dont really ever throw books away, im not christian myself.

fatimashortbread · Today 19:05

3 - a family bible, a King James Version and the Good news version. I have read the Good News one in its entirety- I do not believe

Tryonemoretime · Today 19:07

We have a number of bibles on our house ( including some different versions) and read them regularly. Love reading them.

Unfortunately it still is... we get them left in the holiday cottage at times.

They get thrown out.

Indeed. Mainstream Christianity is not opposed to science.
One example is the Vatican Observatory
founded in 1891 by Pope Leo XIII it was one of the first astronomical research institutes in the world.

Mainstream Christianity is not opposed to science because it has largely given up that fight, after being put in its place by the emergence of a modern Western civilisation that values science and reason more than tatty old superstitions.

It was either swim with the flow or sink. Until recently, only a few fundamentalist sects still tried to challenge science, largely in the US, but now sadly we face a resurgence of all kinds of anti-science and irrational codswallop (flat Earth, anti-vaxxers etc.) due to the weakening of the education system and the influence of the wackier corners of the internet.

Yes, several. My nan was a very devout Christian and we have her old ones, with her handwritten notes on cards still within. My DH is an RE teacher and did a Theology degree so he has some (although he is not religious). On this basis, we do also have a Quran so I'm not sure if this helps your original point 😂

And did steal said Gideon Bible?
No I've not picked up a bible since Sunday School or perhaps RE at secondary school which was decades ago.
