Any tips on getting this down a bit? It’s a fiat 500 and new driver. Currently quotes are £1200. Got it down by £900 by changing from unemployed to student also added myself and made the insurance not start until two weeks time. Just checking in case anyone has any further tips before I pay this ridiculous amount!

When dd passed her test she was about to start uni so she didn’t need a car. She would take out temporary insurance at Xmas/ Easter/ summer, it might be £50 a week so expensive but less because it was for a handful of weeks a year. When she took out a years insurance at 22 it was around £700

That’s correct, but insurance companies will ask who the main driver will be. If you say you are but it’s actually the child that is fronting and can invalidate the insurance.

How would the insurance company know ?
if you’re a named driver you are insured to drive it,how would they prove you were the main driver and not just using it on the day a claim was made
obviously without someone getting guilty and holding their hands up ?

In the event of a claim they can do various checks including checking previous quotes to see if quotes were given for the young driver as the main driver then changed to a parent. They can access all sorts of databases. If a black box is fitted they can check the data.
It’s really not worth taking the risk apart from invalidating your insurance, it means we all pay higher premiums because of fraud.
