Car insurance for new driver

Any tips on getting this down a bit? It’s a fiat 500 and new driver. Currently quotes are £1200. Got it down by £900 by changing from unemployed to student also added myself and made the insurance not start until two weeks time. Just checking in case anyone has any further tips before I pay this ridiculous amount!

Because first quote was £2200!

Pa she is actually a student just on summer break so didn’t know if I could say she was a student

I don't think that is unreasonable.

She is inexperienced and in charge of something that has the power to kill people and damage property.

When you look at it like that it is quite a bargain

Missellie6 · 13/07/2026 08:35

That sounds fairly reasonable, on the same car first year was £1800 (no black box)just about to renew for 2nd year and quotes are about £850.

I know people managed to get quotes by delaying starting by several months after passing (but obviously can’t then drive during that time), insurance in parents name or via black box

Dontgetstuckinthepast · 13/07/2026 08:39

£1200 sounds perfectly normal for a new driver.
I paid £1900 for DS in his first year. £1100 in his second.

You can only insure the child’s car in the parents name and adding the child as a named driver is fronting and is illegal.

Edited as my comment should read to insure….

Sunshineclouds11 · 13/07/2026 09:39

It seems reasonable for a new driver tbh.

Isobel201 · 13/07/2026 09:39

I add my parents onto my insurance, it makes it cheaper. But I don't think £1200 is that bad for a first timer.

pointythings · 13/07/2026 09:43

That's quite reasonable. DD is paying just over £1k for black.box on my car, which is a 1.6 litre estate so quite powerful. She's capped at 20k miles a year, which is plenty. In a year's time she plans to get her own small car, by which point her insurance should be quite a bit lower. She's a good driver, hitting 100% scores.

helpmyclean · 13/07/2026 09:45

i paid £1000 about 8 years ago as a new driver, so your price sounds what I’d expect to be honest!

I did find I had the best price by adding 3 named drivers on though. I had both my grandmothers as they had clean licences that they’d held for a long time, they were both under 70 at the time though so if hers are over that age it probably wouldn’t bring it down! I think I also then added my dad too. I just remember 3 extra drivers being the magic number for the best price

Cosyblankets · 13/07/2026 09:47

It's a reasonable quote

Bryonyberries · 13/07/2026 10:07

As pp have said - experienced named drivers. Also handy if you need anyone else to drive the car at some point!

Also check the mileage that’s being put down to ensure it’s realistic. If it is a black box quote it is better to put a little higher than you need as they charge a lot to add extra miles mid policy.

Unfortunately you’re unlikely to get anything below £1k for a new driver. It’s one of the reasons I’ve tried to get mine driving young, so their wages can all go to the car before they have living costs.

Proteinpudding · 13/07/2026 10:48

That's a very reasonable quote. I paid £2500 on a 1l car in my thirties as a new driver, due to living in a city centre. Even if I had moved to the suburbs, due to the location and needing to drive at rush hour it was still £1200. Friends are typically paying £1500-2000 for their kids in my area. It's just what insurance costs!

PoliteSquid · 13/07/2026 10:52

18yo DS owns his car. Insured in his name. DH and I are named drivers on it which made a big difference. And he has a black box. First year of insurance was £850. That’s on a Fiat Panda - having a less desirable car helps!!

Possiblynever · 13/07/2026 10:56

I was delighted at getting mine insured for £1200 at 17 recently. Some of his friends paid double that. We picked the car/insurance group etc carefully, are in a low crime area and have private parking. Adding myself helped too. Black box of course. I really don't think you'd get any cheaper at this age.

SquashPenguin · 13/07/2026 11:00

That’s a very reasonable amount.

weaselyeyes · 13/07/2026 11:02

Yes, I agree it sounds standard. Like PPs, I also got a quote of about £850 for the second year. As my daughter's a student, though, it still felt a lot as she wouldn't be here using the car all the time. I took her off the insurance, but add her on with PAYG insurance via Veygo when she needs to drive it. Over the course of a year it works out cheaper for me.

Interested to see lots of you go the black box route. I can see it makes quotes cheaper, but I feel unreasonably irritated by the thought of it, even though (as far as I know!) I don't do anything untoward. Does it feel intrusive at all?

Onlywayisrainham · 13/07/2026 11:04

I’m guessing this quote has some kind of black box monitoring with curfews and restrictions? If so, the devil is the detail.

Superscientist · 13/07/2026 11:05

If you can push back the start date to 3 weeks time that would potentially save you a little bit more but that's a fairly typical price unfortunately.

Check the mileage is a low as is sensible - not less than you will do just a realistic amount

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/07/2026 11:08

That sounds pretty standard on that car. They’re very popular with young drivers which doesn’t help.

we paid just under £900 for ds’s first policy on a Peugeot 208, with both parents as additional drivers and a black box that monitors his driving but with no restrictions on when he can drive. That’s with Hastings direct.

aliceyyyy2654 · 13/07/2026 11:12

Ignore the poster who said about putting insurance in parents name, it’s called fronting and is illegal.

£900 sounds very good for a first year new driver.

DaisyChain505 · 13/07/2026 11:25

I wasn’t suggesting this but lots of families do share cars so don’t necessarily have a main driver. For the people I am aware of who have done this the new driver will not be the predominant user as still at school - the car owner also doesn’t have to be the main driver

That’s correct, but insurance companies will ask who the main driver will be. If you say you are but it’s actually the child that is fronting and can invalidate the insurance.
