To feel dismissed by this Dr. DD PMS

DD15.5 has been experiencing lots of ups and downs since last year: low moods, anxiety, insecurity, sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, irritability. She sees a Therapist.

I have been tracking her for the last few months and I realised they are linked to her period, and I am convinced she is suffering from PMS. Her period started at 12 but it took about 2 years to become more regular,

I took her to the Dr last week and all she said is to keep track of it; and analyse /think why she is having those feelings/feeling this way, reasons why she is feeling low, anxious and discuss with therapist. 😒 Maybe sleep better and eat better before her period. Coming from a female Dr, think her response is ridiculous. I asked her if she could take evening primrose or calcium and she said there is no evidence that It can help.

I shall see another dr.

Any advice from PMS sufferers out there. Any apps she can use to track period; Anything she can do/take to improve. We started well teen her and omega in the meantime and I am keeping an eye, also I lavender oil in her pulse to help with sleep.

What did you want from the doc?

Contraryjane · 12/07/2026 07:40

Another doctor will say the same thing.

GoonDDyougotthis · 12/07/2026 07:46

Surely there are things out there that can help? Vitamins, contraceptive pills, lifestyle changes. If it is impacting your day to day life? It is not just impacting her one or two days before her period.

If you are suffering from menopause and is impacting your day you day life would you be happy with this response?

The contraceptive pill might help. Vitamins and lifestyle changes dont have any solid evidence base which is why the doctors won’t recommend them.

your Dd needs to track her periods and learn to recognise her moods and how to manage them. There is no magic pill to fix this.

GoonDDyougotthis · 12/07/2026 07:49

Menopause was impacting me and I was feeling lots of anxiety. If I go to the dr and they tell me analyse why you are feeling so anxious? 😬 now I am taking menopace, omega 3, magnesium, and I feel better and don’t have to spend thousands on therapy.

But you’re not a teenage girl. The doctor is right.

GoonDDyougotthis · 12/07/2026 07:52

I have read other threads where gynaecologists have recommended calcium and evening primrose oil and it has made a difference. Just wanted to know if DD15 can take them. I guess we shall experiment ourselves.

What did the Dr think when you mentioned trying the contraceptive pill if you didn’t think therapy was helpful?

We didn’t mention contraceptive pill; was hoping the dr would mention it

I didn’t say therapy wasn’t helpful but I thought there are other things out there that can help with this.

How bad is it, PMDD level or nowhere near as extreme?

I think it definitely impacts her more than other people. Eg myself when I had my period and DD1. I am not sure if it is PMDD but I have suspected PCOS.

I would go back and ask for the contraceptive pill. My daughter was the same and no amount of therapy helped. The mini pill was a miracle and she no longer suffers with depression, it has completely changed her moods.

Thank you. Which contraceptive pill your daughter take and how? How old is your daughter?

I think I will ask for this if nothing else help as GCSE are approaching and she needs to feel her best.

Perhaps the Dr knowing you had therapy ongoing though that was a good route at this stage based on what you shared with her.

Why did you not ask yourself if that is what you were hoping for?

I would go back to the Dr and tell them what you would like to consider to see if they would advise at this stage.

I found Evening primrose oil really useful from late teens for pms, i would just take it myself from holland and barrett. i have to take it consistently and it takes a couple of months constant taking it to feel better but definitely reduces my PMS and boob pain.. 1000 mg of cold pressed EPO worked at that age. Now im a perimenapausal lady it takes about 4000 to have the same effect.

she said a lot

and all very sensible

You sound like you wanted to walk of there with a prescription of a medication that you think will be a magic pill

Floatingdownriver · 12/07/2026 08:56

Have you looked at PMDD?

Werhere · 12/07/2026 08:56

You sound like you want an alternative practitioner as it sounds that’s what you want

Clarsh · 12/07/2026 08:59

Why didn't you ask about the pill if that's what you wanted? I know it's not for everyone but after awful periods in my teens, I went on it at maybe 16 and have only every come off when TTC. I literally never think about my cycle and am amazed by how periods rule the lives of so many of my colleagues and friends. They just don't even feature on my radar.

She’s 15. If she wants to try the pill then ask for it. Doctor isn’t psychic. Also vitamins etc… you don’t need a GP to advise those. Check if they’re safe for her age and crack on. Calcium certainly is safe at 15.

Same, I don’t get them. My best mate talks about hers every single time she’s on (which seems to be constant). I don’t really understand why she doesn’t take something when it seems to rule her life.

No she wanted to walk out with free vitamin prescriptions for DD so she doesn’t have to buy them herself from the shops where they’re easily available. Remember <18 prescriptions are free.

I wasn’t sure as they never agreed with me; but will certainly ask another dr. I also know they can make some people symptoms worse. There are lots out there too so not sure what to ask or look for.

Also, is it safe to start those so young?

I will speak to another doctor

I didn’t want a prescription fir vitamins I wanted to know if it was safe yo take calcium and evening primrose at 15 and which one to buy and the quantity. But she dismissed this straight away
