AIBU to be so angry about the hosepipe bans and the situation we find ourselves in?!

If we keep having these heatwaves AND hosepipe bans the future is going to become utterly unbearable.

I read somewhere that it's not even about us running out of water this year! The water companies are just worried about having to supply what we need because it will impact their environmental targets (they want to reduce water use per capita).

If they don't hit these targets it could reduce their bonuses and/or they might be fined.

These bans will have enormous adverse impacts on nature and ecosystems.

If we can't water our gardens, plants and parks wildlife will suffer. Pollinators especially. I think it's appalling.

Are you ready for the hosepipe ban?

Have you taken any measures (buying water butts, filling up pools) to mitigate the impact this will have on your normal routine/enjoyment of your home/garden/life?

Most importantly: are you going to comply?

Use a watering can, use bath water, only water important (to you) plants, forget about annual flowers unless you just have a small border. And make sure you have water butts for when it does rain.

Not so easy with certain disabilities though. I use a sprinkler and a hosepipe and having had my ( very small) garden remodelled over the last 2 years I'm now loath to let my subsequent hard work (and money) go to waste. If Thames Water want my compliance then they should have spent their huge profits on fixing existing leaks.

So just to be clear, do you understand that the more water we take from the environment and the more water we have to treat, the more damage we do to the environment? And do you understand that and then still think you should be able to take an unlimited amount of a finite resource just because you paid for it? Because that's fucking stupid. We already use more water per person than any other European countries many of which are drier than ours. People need to understand it will run out. It is a finite resource. And we don't need as much we're using, people are wasting it.

Data centres often use environmental water not treated drinking quality water because that would be wasting a finite resource. I agree that data centres use an abhorrent amount of water but if you turn them off most industries would be fucked. We can't run a society without them anymore. But people can use less water, because the rest of Europe is already using less water than us and they're absolutely fine.

Data centres require pure, clean water. Many rely on potable (drinking) water.

Please make sure you look up things you say before saying them to make sure you're not talking out of your arse.

And 1976 was when phrases like 'save water bath with a friend' came from.😀 During that drought the water companies reduced the mains pressure, we had pretty much zero water pressure so running a hose was impossible anyway only a trickle out of the taps! They were incompetent then too, no one cared because it was just a job and they got paid whether they did a good job or not.

Also most people didn't shower once or twice a day back then.

In our area you can use a drip system even with the ban. I've just tested it as I've not used it for a while and it's in need of TLC so it looks like I shall be using the watering can.

Common sense needs to prevail, ive got a hosepipe with a gun attachment - so im not wasting any water by watering my plants with a hosepipe over a watering can.

We are having solar panels installed this month, because we can finally afford to. We will be unlikely to make our money back, but its not about that - we are doing it because its good for the environment not to save a shedload of money

I agree about making changes where we can. I use public transport when I can. Our solar panels have paid for themselves, But I drink milk and eat cheese, so shoot me.

I can't water my patio garden or terrace without the hose. Not at the moment anyway as I pulled my back out. I mean I could use a 4 pint milk carton but it would take dozens of movement from bathroom to outside.

But the hose is attached to garden tap which we hoisted up so it can do up and downstairs at the same time.

I would forgo a shower myself before I'd let my plants die.

You do realise for around 3 months this year we were in a drought situation? I think water for drinking is more important than water for someones lawn.

Plants are important. All my neighbours have large wonderful gardens full of fruit trees, shrubs etc which supports the wild life. We need to give our gardens alive. I don’t have grass really. I have meadow so will keep watering as it’s full of little creatures which depends on it.

What counts as diagnosed? The GP referred me to podiatrist for plantar and arthritis which stop me marching about with many watering cans. Does that count.

I think so. I’ve declared myself as needing the priority service last night , I do have a diagnosed physical condition which affects all my connective tissue so affects mobility. Water company emailed me this morning saying I’m now on the register.

followed by an email to all ten minutes later saying there’s now a hosepipe ban and that anyone registered with the priority service doesn’t have to comply!

Watering cans are fine, it's these idiots who obsessively water grass; absolutely no need.

Out of interest, and this is a genuine question not a criticism. A farm by us this morning was pumping water out of the canal to irrigate a field, is that a standard thing?

Whose canal is it? Some farms dig their own irrigation channels specifically for this reason.

If they are pumping out of the Grand Union, I'd check with the Canal & Rivers Trust (if in England and Wales)
