How late is to late to cut the grass during school holidays?

Is 8.30pm too late to cut the grass during school holidays? I'm in NI where the schools have already finished for the summer. I'm thinking of going to cut the grass now (after I got home, tidied up and had dinner) but is it too late? It really needs done.

My answer depends on the size of your garden and the type of mower?

WishYou · Yesterday 20:00

No its fine especially mid week when people will still be going about their business and kids for the most part wont be in bed yet!

BlueMum16 · Yesterday 20:01

I think week night as long as it's done and finished before 9pm that's fine.

Weekend I would hope people do in the day.

Kingdomofsleep · Yesterday 20:03

It is not fine imo, I'd say children under 5yo are in bed by then.

after I got home, tidied up and had dinner

Do those in a different order. Get home, mow the lawn, have dinner, tidy up. Surely

10pm

I’d say children under 8 are in bed asleep by then! But weirdly for me, I’d rather you did it at 9 as once DD is asleep nothing wakes her! But any excuse not to go…

are there children in the neighbouring houses?

Meadowfinch · Yesterday 20:15

I do mine at 9pm when it is a little cooler. Usually done by 10, then shower and fall into bed with all the windows open. Blissful. 😊

Trumpisacunt · Yesterday 20:21

Being school holidays is irrelevant...lots of working parents will still be putting their children to bed at the usual time as they still need to drop at day care at the same time they normally would

9pm

My next door neighbour just woke up my 2 year old using a chainsaw next door. Don’t do it. It can wait a day!

idontknow54789 · Yesterday 20:59

Of course it’s fine! Mumsnet is a crazy world. My kids will be out on the trampoline until 9. Round here it’s way to hot to be doing it during the day anyway.

Parcelpass · Yesterday 21:02

It wouldn't bother me. Doing the lawn in your own garden is fine. I imagine you will be finished by 10pm. Its not that noisy surely.

mylittleworld563 · Yesterday 21:04

As another NI resident 8pm is perfectly fine. Pretty much every evening I can hear lawnmowers, strimmers and hedge trimmers until 9:30.

I think there's understanding that our weather doesn't really allow us to be too precious about later yard work. So far we have had rain pretty much everyday of June and July so far. When it's dry do what you need too.

I love that the OP isn’t responding as busy cutting the grass 🤣.
School holidays here in Scotland too and someone is out doing theirs now.

WerewolfOfLoudon · Yesterday 21:08

Half the neighbourhood was out mowing lawns here this evening after 8pm, they are all but one of them finished now. Perfectly normal and acceptable, respectfully no one would start after 9pm here.

Wonder if your neighbour that's still out is the same one as mine 🤣

Thanks everyone, grass is cut and everything tidied up. About to have a shower before getting into bed to read for a bit. Success!

Also just after I finished my front garden, my neighbour across the road came out to cut theirs, just before 9pm. I like to think I’m a trendsetter

Haha no you’re right, they were trimming the hedges and it’s likely louder than a mower. I also wasn’t particularly angry because I get that it’s a juggle - mildly annoyed at having to resettle that’s all!

Actually I have really fond memories of being in bed as a child in summer and hearing the lawn mowers outside. Felt soothing and summery 🥰

hahabahbag · Yesterday 22:51

9/10pm is fine. Those of us with jobs often do maintenance in the evenings
