I think the USA team had the chance to do the right thing, by putting the player on the bench and they didn't. They knew it was wrong but they were willing to benefit from it, so I don't have a huge amount of sympathy for the USA players here to be honest.

The players can’t make that decision though, that’s down to their manager.

I agree. But did you see the American FA publicly thanking Trump at a press conference yesterday? They had no intention of doing the right thing. Absolutely no shame.

I see the player involved had a word with the Belgium manager and he told him that it wasn't his fault and they didn't blame him, they blamed FIFA.

I'm not sure why we are surprised by this terrible behaviour from FIFA. It is proven to be corrupt from the top to the bottom.

It’s just time to move on, otherwise we’re as bad as he is. I feel sorry for American people and fans who don’t support all the ugliness they’ve had put upon them

No it isn't time to move on. America cheated. They are a disgrace.

99bottlesofkombucha · Yesterday 11:45

It is both right and just.

MrsAvocet · Yesterday 11:47

I also feel a bit sorry for the US players. I would guess that for most of them, playing in a home World Cup will be the pinnacle of their careers and it's now going to be remembered for all the wrong reasons. And they were going to look bad whatever happened in this match. Ridiculed for losing but a win, especially if the not banned player had scored, would have been attributed to cheating. Presumably the actual players had no real say about what happened in this debacle.
That said, I was still extremely happy to see the score. I'm glad that not only did Belgium win, but comprehensively. I don't think there can be any comments about suspect referees or anything, the far better team won fair and square. It's the right outcome and anything that puts Trump down is fine by me!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Yesterday 12:16

Must say I felt a bit sorry for the US team.. All the controversy stirred up by Trump’s unbelievably stupid intervention, and the cooperation of ever-corrupt FIFA, was not their fault. As a result, the issue incensed Belgium (along with so many others) and ‘fired them up’ as they put it.

I dare say they’d probably have won anyway, but….

MirrorMirror1247 · Yesterday 12:23

Can you imagine if USA had ended up winning the whole tournament? Trump would have claimed it was all down to him!

Aha, I had wondered who the man smirking and looking as smug as fuck just over Trumps shoulder was. Think you've just explained it.

Overtheatlantic · Yesterday 12:30

I was glad to read that the player, Fabian, spoke to the Belgian team; even though it wasn’t his fault it still took courage. There’s lots of ashamed Americans today.

useless and cheating USA team has left World Cup

The team, the manager, and their star striker haven't done anything wrong.

The team is not a cheating team.

This is a Trump issue. No more, no less

Lins77 · Yesterday 14:05

From now on, every team that has a player sent off or a goal disallowed or a penalty not given should get their head of state to write to FIFA asking to get it overturned. See how they like that.

Maybe we can get the King to protest Quansah's red card 😄

And a FIFA issue. And a USA FA issue.

Theres still matches left in the tournament so it’s actually time to move on😉😂 And they were a disgrace since they broke the actual world by denying climate change, going back on environmental issues, kept wars going and started more- the World Cup is nothing at all compared to what Trump and Vance have done

Doingtheboxerbeat · Yesterday 15:39

The entire internet is absolutely clowning on the US 🤭

It wasn't the team. It was just the idiot Trump. But, yes, I’m glad they’re out now. Sorted. ✔️

Exactly what I think, they're not innocent bystanders in all this...I'm ecstatic Belgium won!

They could have said NO, this is wrong, it goes against the rules but they didn't

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 16:23

@BravasPatatas So what was Pochettino supposed to do? Anger his employers and the president? The USA team is not over blessed with strikers so he was more or less forced to play him.

It’s Folarin Balogun by the way. Raised in the uk and was eligible for England. Played for under 21s and was on Arsenal’s books.

Lins77 · Yesterday 16:41

I get what people mean, but it's a knockout round of the World Cup. They kind of have a duty to field the best team possible, not least for the fans, many of whom have paid a lot of money for tickets.

The right result, anyway, thank goodness.

TheDogsMother · Yesterday 16:54

Look out. 1000% tariffs on Belgian Chocs.

Yes I agree. Glad they're out. Not smug though, because we may be next! 😬

deeahgwitch · Yesterday 17:12

Bad things happen because good people say nothing.
OPTIONS
The Belgians could have refused to play.
The USA could have not picked Folarin Balogun.
Folarin Balogun could have said No to playing.
The remaining teams in the tournament could have refused to play.

Eh? Was that aimed at someone else? I didn’t say he was supposed to do anything. Someone said that the team shouldn’t have fielded him. I said it wasn’t the team’s decision. They have no say over who is fielded. The manager is the only person who can make that decision.
And I know who the player is…
