I was genuinely worried when I looked for the result this morning. I still haven't got over the shock of waking up and hearing Trump had been elected President when he won the election for his first term in office.
But Belgium did us proud.
Well done to them.

Danhausenrocks · Yesterday 08:41

I do find it hilarious that FIFA cheated to get both Ronaldo playing in the tournament and also the USA team and both got kicked out on the same night.

That's karma for ya

Agree. It is trump and FIFA who are at fault here, not the individual players.

But I am very glad Belgium won so decisively.

I think the USA team had the chance to do the right thing, by putting the player on the bench and they didn't. They knew it was wrong but they were willing to benefit from it, so I don't have a huge amount of sympathy for the USA players here to be honest.

Strawberriesandcaviar · Yesterday 08:43

It's outrageous that FIFA capitulated to Trump but yes, I'm glad they're out because of that.

I disagree. Of course that would have been the right thing but if trump can exert that level of pressure on FIFA what hope do you think the team had of standing up to him?

Feetballislife · Yesterday 08:46

Hey, it’s not over yet! FIFA still has time to reverse the score to 4-1 to the USA, Trump’s not doubt already made the call!

Feetballislife · Yesterday 08:47

Belgium should thank Trump for the giving the ultimate motivational team talk yesterday… Belgium had the entire world cheering them on as a result.

Danhausenrocks · Yesterday 08:48

I see your point @Sweetsalad but it still remains they were happy to benefit from cheating.

I did read a low stakes conspiracy on Reddit, someone joking that the USA team threw the game because they didn't want to benefit from his involvement.... 😂😂

Strawberriesandcaviar · Yesterday 08:51

He is attacking Moroni of Italy now. Or he was before he left for the NATO meeting in Turkey.

His TRUTH attached. Need click to see it all.

I do feel a bit sorry for the US team, they got massively outplayed by a better team and would have anyway, but their fantastic tournament has been tainted by something out of their control. Especially the player who got suspended who is a birthright citizen and probably has views about trump anyway. Hopefully the head of feifa gets sacked and the world survives the rest of trumps term

I feel excatly the same. I bet none of the individual Team USA players were asking for a phone call to Fifa. Balogun conducted himself well after the original (possibly harsh) red card. Their performance in the World Cup, and fans experience in individual cities, has done a lot to increase national unity, show the contributions of immigrants and birthright citizens, and improve their image in the eyes of the world.

But, of course, their president had to mess it all up for them because everything he touches turns to shit. And also Fifa, who just when you thought they couldn't get any more corrupt, finds a way to lower the bar.

Lindy2 · Yesterday 08:53

I'm very pleased Belgium won and that is was a solid result.

Trump and FIFA's behaviour is disgusting. If there's no integrity in a sport all credibility is lost. Unfortunately cheating is just a way of life for Trump and FIFA sadly aren't fit for purpose.

Balogun should have sat out of the game. He is now tainted by this forever.

That's a decision for the manager, though, not the players.

The Belgian manager said (reinstated player) Balogun had come to speak with him after the game and he respected that and had told him it wasn't his fault.

The Belgian manager said (reinstated player) Balogun had come to speak with him after the game and he respected that and had told him it wasn't his fault.

That's a nice sporting touch and huge respect to him for that.

The question now, is who actually needs FIFA? They've proven to be ruining the game beyond belief.

Why can't EUFA, CONMEBOL, Concacaf, CAF and the rest of them just say "bollocks to this, let's just do our own tournament like we do with the Euros, African cup etc"

Because now we are genuinely at the stage where Fifa's corruption has been so outright it's affected the integrity of the game

Kokonimater · Yesterday 09:18

It wasn’t actually the US team’s fault. STrump humiliated them by his stupid actions. And that poor player will struggle to live this down.

But they made a huge mistake by putting him on the pitch. Shame on them for that

BeasKnee · Yesterday 09:26

All criticism should be aimed at FIFA. We all know what Trump is like so his actions shouldn't be a surprise and are hardly the worst thing he's ever done. He was Trump being Trump.

The USA team and Balogun aren't to blame for this. Any other team would field their best players if able and there should be no shame in starting him when the ban was removed. There are lots of players who haven't been punished with cards over the years who should have been. Should their teams have taken the high ground and said their players should have had red cards and been banned so then benched them voluntarily for subsequent matches? Of course not. The only thing the USA team should regret is how they played last night.

Balogun's comments after the red card (before ban lifted) about shaking the ref's hand despite not agreeing it was a red make me think well of him. He seems a respectful young man and I'd hate this to follow him around forever.

FIFA though, they should be ashamed.

Getbackinthebox · Yesterday 09:32

I am glad the USA lost with their ‘star’ player still in the team because otherwise we would never have heard the end of it from Trump saying they were robbed of a victory because of a pesky red card! He shouldn’t have been playing though but at least they can’t use his absence as an excuse. They should have graciously accepted the red card expulsion like other teams have done as now the USA just looks like a bunch of corrupt cheaters. Everyone knows the USA isn’t strong at football anyway and they would have looked much better (and had a more empathetic reaction) if they had just held their hands up and accepted their fate graciously. I think the world would have been much more supportive then of the USA’s growing interest and enthusiasm for football. They have just put themselves down in all football fans’ estimations by trying to bend the rules. They are deservedly out of the world cup. Yay!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 09:36

Why does anyone think the team cheated? They didn’t ask for this? Play him and they were wrong, not play him and their progress might stall. The point is, the issue should never have arisen. It’s political interference with the rules and fifa allowed it to happen. Neither Poch or the team asked for this.

Lins77 · Yesterday 10:06

Agree that the team are not to blame for this, and it's a shame that they, and particularly Balogun, have been tarnished because the president doesn't know how to conduct himself and FIFA are idiots.

I agree about the team.

But I disagree with the idea that because we already know Trump is a cunt, he’s therefore immune from criticism, and that “all criticism” should be aimed at FIFA.
FIFA should absolutely be roundly criticised, as they have been. But so should Trump. I appreciate he doesn’t care, and yes it’s not the worst thing he’s done. But he’s in the wrong, and should be criticised.

BeasKnee · Yesterday 10:18

Yeah, you're right. It's not like I don't absolutely despise Trump. But it's so entirely in keeping with his character that it just seems a pretty minor thing to be annoyed with him about. There is literally nothing he won't talk shit about and pretend he knows best. Everyone knows that, even the people who stand behind him at press conferences grinning inanely.

I guess that I was just trying to say that in the grand scheme of everything he does it's pretty meaningless and that it's the capitulating to his every whim that's the problem here. FIFA should be better than this, but I guess it's not at all surprising that they aren't.

I think Trump thinks he is some kind of king of the world cup because the US is co-hosting.

Fifa absolutely should have told him to fuck off! The pettiness in me hopes all other countries should start appealing any red cards given so far.

The Belgians are epic.
