Being told that as a size 18 I can’t wear certain clothes

I do appreciate that when posting canvassing for opinions on outfits etc., you will get all sorts of responses.

But I have been told a few times now that as a size 18, I should cover up and not expose too much skin, basically purely because of my size.

AIBU to think this isn’t okay? I have as much a right to get my shoulders out as any other size!

chat GPT is good to see hair colours and styles but it does change / edit your body type considerably..

It really does depend on your build.

I have broad shoulders and a wide ribcage. Even at my lowest weight (clinically underweight) I couldn’t fit into smaller than a size 14 for most things. Due to my bones, not my fat - which at the time was pretty much nonexistent.

This is the picture that people are commenting that the model is overweight.

There are some items of clothing only very slim and often young women can get away with. I’m thinking crop tops and hot pants sort of thing. Yes some bigger women wear those but it isn’t a good look.

I mean it’s from the Curve /plus size range so I would be more surprised if she wasn’t overweight

the only person saying overweight women can’t look good is you. The only person saying a clearly over weight woman isn’t is you. The only person pretending to be smaller than you are by posting clearly edited images is you,

yes, everyone looks better a healthy weight than over or under weight, in most people’s opinions, and so they should, a healthy weight is called that for a reason, being under or over is unhealthy, and the further away you stray the more unhealthy it gets.

OP I always loved a halterneck when I was young, smooth & toned: my shoulder shape & back always really suited it, & even better if also a higher neck (small of boob & don't suit a low neckline). BUT I wouldn't chose that shape now 30 years later as my arms have changed: I'm much older & wear a different size (12/14 rather than 8/10). Both things - age & size- are important for me now as the skin looks really different. I do need to find the time & routine to tone my 54 year old body up, but even then I wouldn't wear a halter dress to a wedding. I do think they're best left to the beautifully toned & smooth.

That's MY opinion, & I've approached this question with how I would feel in such a dress- self-concious & uncomfortable. This is probably why PPs are upsetting you, as they are writing how THEY would feel. If YOU want to wear it, great. If you wouldn't feel self-concious, brilliant, I applaud you. Just trying to show why PPs feel differently.

If it's about heat, you can get lovely dresses with short/floaty sleeves that are cool, if you would like. I'm also going to a wedding reception next week & have ordered a dress with sleeves that is still cool (in both heat & style, I think).

I think if you ask on the internet you are unfortunately going to get some nasty replies. There will always be people who hide behind their screens who wouldn’t dare say anything like that in person. You should wear whatever you like! I think you look great in the brown dress. Yes ChatGPT tidies things up a bit but it’s not made that much of a difference.

Are people really saying that the model in the brown dress on the website is overweight/obese or have I got it wrong? It states on the website that she is wearing a size 8. She’s clearly not overweight!

Please read the thread, yes you’re wrong, it’s the colourful dress, and yes the images are heavily edited from the op, she may not have realised it, but it is clearly visible in terms of arms etc from the spotty dress to the brown one. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t or won’t look lovely. She just won’t look like the ai image,

If you don't like people expressing opinions then hanging out on a site created for women to exchange ideas and express opinions is probably not the best place to be.

Wear what you like OP but people have eyes and aren’t going to join in with the madness. It doesn’t help anyone to lie about weight and pretend slimmed down photos are an accurate representation.

Mumsnet is absolutely wild. People saying that the model is overweight. The website says she is a size 8, she absolutely is not overweight at all and wouldn't be even if she was a couple of sizes bigger.

OP, I'm a similar size to you and I think the white spotty dress might look less casual with a steam (appreciate you have just popped it on and I'm not picky for every day wear). The brown char gpt one would convince me to order if I thought I could solve the bra situation.

People on here are so judgy, it's very difficult living your day to day life knowing that there are so many toxic people judging external appearance over absolutely everything else about a person

I think in the 00s there was a massive trend to ‘dress for your shape’. Shows such as Trinny and Susannah etc all talked about minimising large busts, hiding tummies and making big hips look slimmer. There has definitely been a pushback against this: we shouldn’t have to disguise our physical features to make them more palatable. Personally I still feel better if I’m wearing something that shows off my nicer features, maybe it’s social conditioning. I also like to cover as much skin as possible.

I get a weird second hand discomfort from seeing people wearing clothes that look ill-fitting or weather inappropriate. It’s not about size at all, though as someone who suffers from horrible thigh chafing and hates not wearing a bra I often wonder how others aren’t suffering as I do.
