To block GBNews from my parent’s TV?

My parents retired 4 years ago. They’re both in their 60s, healthy, happy, comfortable financially.

Since they’ve retired they have been sucked in by every single thing they say on there. They can spend an entire day sat in front of the TV getting angrier and angrier. It’s to the point that if Starmer comes on the TV, they shout about how he should be killed.

it’s genuinely starting to concern me. You can’t have a rational conversation with them about anything. I miss my parents, how they used to be before all the conspiracy and anger took over.

I’m genuinely tempted to block it from their tv using parental controls and just pretending it’s some weird fault in their telly. They’d not be able to fix it.

You don't have to agree with their views but to block it from their TV is outrageous.

It’s not about their views, it’s about the fact they sit in front of it all day and get so increasingly angry that they start yelling about how “lefties” should be killed.

It’s just getting to the point it’s getting concerning.

You can’t block it. All you can do is see them less, especially if you don’t agree with their views.

Winefride · 02/07/2026 09:09

I do believe you're overstepping in many ways, OP. I am concerned about people watching the BBC, or any news really, but I wouldn't presume to be arbiter of their views and television sets! The world has gone mad!

RoseField1 · 02/07/2026 09:09

They are adults, don't be ridiculous. That would be beyond controlling.

MurunBuchstansangursCousinRossiter · 02/07/2026 09:09

Do it. It’s no different to installing parental controls on a child’s devices.

Miyagi99 · 02/07/2026 09:09

I would, sounds like it’s akin to being radicalised. Also can’t be nice to live your retirement years full of hate, they need hobbies!

northernballer · 02/07/2026 09:10

I hate GB news as much as the next person but you can't block it no more than someone can block the Guardian. Free speech is free speech.

graceinspace999 · 02/07/2026 09:10

There must be newer ways to signal your virtue than becoming horribly coercive and controlling?

No?

Try tolerating other people’s opinions, likes and dislikes.

If you do that maybe you won’t be so angry at them as to try to control their television.

It is, because, and I shouldn't have to explain this, they're not children!

If it is genuinely that extreme, then perhaps something else is happening. Are they showing other signs which concern you, or is it just their political views which bother you?

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 02/07/2026 09:12

They actually say they should be killed? Not just thrown out (of office) but actually killed? That's a very concerning extremist mindset.

There are certain politicians that I want nowhere in any position of power and influence, and at least one whom I believe should have been sent to prison rather than given a knighthood; but I still wouldn't dream of wanting any of them to actually be killed.

TallSturdyGirls · 02/07/2026 09:12

Personally, I actually think, though it's really wrong to do, it's the lesser of two evils.

GB news and the Daily Mail have completely ruined my parents in law. They just sit in their at now, spewing hate, whilst being angry and scared at the world.

There's nothing positive to come out of it. It's like they've entered a cult and being radicalised.

TooOrangey · 02/07/2026 09:13

Don’t be ridiculous.

If they're calling for the murder of left-wing people, they were always like this. For some reason you haven't noticed it.

Either way, don't be a control freak. It's not your TV.

Yes, that's off the scale.

Larrythecatforpm · 02/07/2026 09:14

It’s definitely a retirement thing, my retired parents love GBnews too. I call it the daily hate news. 😁

Aside from this they’re completely fine. They just can’t handle something even vaguely political. My dad is awaiting a very routine hospital appointment. Nothing urgent, it’s ENT. He wholeheartedly believes he has been pushed to the back of the queue because he’s a white man. I’ve tried explaining urgency to him, but he thinks this. When you discuss it with him, he rants about it being a “leftie” view and some thing that should get people shot.

I wouldn’t watch GB News either. But you are being absolutely ridiculous! They are not children, who do you think you are to control what they watch??

MeanwhileinGilead · 02/07/2026 09:17

Are GB news presenters or guests really saying that Starmer and "lefties" should be killed? It seems to me that you may be looking for someone external to blame when your parents themselves are the real issue. If what is happening is a result of cognitive decline, you have some hard work ahead of you and postponing or avoiding it will only worsen things. If it's genuinely a reflection of considered views then removing their current default source won't help; there are plenty more out there for someone who's looking for them and acting as you propose also runs the risk of radicalising them further as they begin to complain that their television viewing is being manipulated.

Abhannmor · 02/07/2026 09:17

Oh God , I've often fantasised about this in the case of my sister. The sad part is how frightened it makes people? If you believed the constant drum beat of scare stories you'd probably never leave the house. GBH News I call it. Still free speech innit. Just have to trust the good sense of the majority. Pox News in the USA is going through a bit of a wobble. How to disentangle themselves from the rotting corpse of MAGA. GBH News will shortly face the same tricky problem here.

goslowly · 02/07/2026 09:17

It’s absolutely not anything cognitive. They’re just so wrapped up in this nonsense from GB News. They believe it’s some great conspiracy against them

Yes! They get worried whenever I leave the house

"Nothing urgent" may reassure you, but he's probably got anxiety about it. Hospital procedures are very anxiety inducing.
I'm not a fan of GB news myself, but I don't think they'd be allowed to broadcast such obvious hate as "killing lefties". That's very extreme.
