To block GBNews from my parent’s TV?

goslowly · 02/07/2026 09:03

My parents retired 4 years ago. They’re both in their 60s, healthy, happy, comfortable financially.

Since they’ve retired they have been sucked in by every single thing they say on there. They can spend an entire day sat in front of the TV getting angrier and angrier. It’s to the point that if Starmer comes on the TV, they shout about how he should be killed.

it’s genuinely starting to concern me. You can’t have a rational conversation with them about anything. I miss my parents, how they used to be before all the conspiracy and anger took over.

I’m genuinely tempted to block it from their tv using parental controls and just pretending it’s some weird fault in their telly. They’d not be able to fix it.

I don't think you can do that if they're of sound mind.

However, I think the people replying to you are either pro GB News agenda or don't understand what you're dealing with. There's a documentary you might be interested in from 2015 called The Brainwashing of My Dad (about Fox News).

MSDOUBTFIRE · 02/07/2026 09:46

Yes do it, and then watch for any changes.

I've reduced contact with some of my ILS because they believe everything they hear on GB News. They're in their 50s and still working, so I don't think it's a retirement thing. I'm 70, retired and still an anti-racist lefty, like my parents before me!

My local Stand Up To Racism group organised coaches to go to the anti-racist march in London earlier this year. The age profile was mainly middle-aged and older, included lots of pensioners, and a fair proportion of teens/early 20s. People in their 30s and 40s appeared to be under-represented.

People in their 30s and 40s probably had young kids to look after and work to go to. Glad to hear there was a good spread of ages though.

They sit in front of the TV all day and call for the murder of the Prime Minister and left wing people?

They sit in front of it just ranting and raving away

Think this site needs some new acronyms. WALOB would be a start

Unpaidworkmakestheeconomytick · 02/07/2026 09:48

I’m with the 40% who agree with you. Having listened to endless conspiracy drivel from elderly friends, I would say John Lewis and their ilk should block gb news as a favour to every retired customer they sell a tv to.

Cathandkin · 02/07/2026 09:48

godmum56 · 02/07/2026 09:46

fuck off with the ageism.

Quite. I'm 66, retired and still as left wing as I was in my 20s.

Larrythecatforpm · 02/07/2026 09:14

It’s definitely a retirement thing, my retired parents love GBnews too. I call it the daily hate news. 😁

and again fuck off with your ageist views

They've been radicalised. If you are genuinely worried for them, report them to Prevent.

But I would absolutely accidentally remove the channel from their sight.

Prevent was meant to prevent terrorist atrocities in the UK mainly from radical Islam. Now you are advocating using the resources of the State to censor ‘wrong think’ from two harmless OAP’s?

So you think those under the retirement age are not right wing or susceptible?

I wish I could block bbc so my parents don’t get indoctrinated by leftist BS propaganda

You'll be aware that the BBC is highly regulated, unlike GB News. No doubt you are communicating your concerns in the prescribed way to get this propaganda dealt with.

cannibalfish · 02/07/2026 09:49

It’s tough but you can’t change them and I don’t think blocking the channel would undo the damage. I personally just wouldn’t see them again, I couldn’t be around it.

ThatSourGobstopper · 02/07/2026 09:50

You must be joking? Your parents are in their 60s and are perfectly entitled to watch what they want the same as you can watch what you want. The cheek of you!

Calling for people to be killed because you don't agree with something they've said or done is not harmless.

goslowly · 02/07/2026 09:51

Cathandkin · 02/07/2026 09:50

Starmer, lefties in general, they want the “boats sunk”

Dear lord. So this kind of attitude is new? Definitely something else going on.

Calling for people to be killed because you don't agree with something they've said or done is not harmless.

Plenty of Left wing people call for Trump and Farage to be killed.
Should they also be dealt with by Prevent?

How much control do you want the Government to have over our lives, your view is very dystopian.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 02/07/2026 09:53

It’s massively controlling to block your parents from watching GB news. You may not agree with it but they are adults, it’s their life and their free choice.

Fuck me, there are some stupidly bigoted people on this thread.

BridgetJonesV2 · 02/07/2026 09:55

It's more worrying OP that they're young for retirement and are spending all day in front of the TV, I'd be having a chat about finding some hobbies or a new project round the house.

Distract them.

goslowly · 02/07/2026 09:55

Cathandkin · 02/07/2026 09:53

Dear lord. So this kind of attitude is new? Definitely something else going on.

They’ve always been fairly right wing. Tory voters etc., but since retirement and having more time on their hands they’ve just been sucked down this rabbit hole. It definitely started during Covid, but it’s just gone insane since watching GBNews

OP posts:
elastamum · 02/07/2026 09:56

Do you have children? If so I would have a conversation with them about how you can't leave the children with them if they are going to express such extremist views and that if the children repeated those views in school it might raise safeguarding concerns. I would also call them out whenever they do it. Do not just let it go.

What ageist rubbish. Racists are racists, no matter what age they are. Ditto homophobes, mysogynists and so on and so on. The common denominatorwhen it comes to vulnerability is more lilely to be (lack of) education and social class than age, IMO

And it's also a dangerous road to go down. The Brritish government is considering making social media companies prioritise 'trusted', by which it means BBC and Channel 4, news sources. And yet the BBC is mired in controversy over it's selective editing...
