To have thought we'd get some sleep at a festival! I think ive made a mistake booking

Was not expecting a great sleep. Official party/dance music carried on to about 3/3.30 which is as i thought and I was assuming we'd sleep after then/this morning. But one tent of people is still outside drinking and are really loud and talking nonesense/shouting. They aren't even young.

This was a treat for my teen but he won't cope with zero sleep. I think ive made a big mistake. 4 more nights.

When you say teen, what age exactly is your DC? I’m assuming you wouldn’t have to worry about a 16 - 19 yo, they’ll know it’s all part of the festival experience. Under 16 yo, they can be grumps with lack of sleep, I probably wouldn’t have taken festival camping for 5 nights tbh.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 02/07/2026 08:03

DD went to Leeds festival after GCSE’s. Did early bird so Wednesday- Monday. Camped in the ‘quieter’ bit.
She had a great time. But on the Monday when she come back and showered she was just sitting on her bed, silent tears streaming down her face. I panicked thinking ‘what the hell has happened to her’ but she said ‘I’m
just so tired!’
😂😂

Davidroseswoollyjumpers · 02/07/2026 08:07

The general noise and music didn't bother me. The quietness after with one group being loud was more annoying. They weren't even chatting or playing music. one was shouting random words and laughing for 2 hours. I know i sound grumpy but honestly young people partying wouldn't have been as annoying.

I was expecting bad sleep but I had mis judged my tolerance for no sleep.

I can live with being tired though, its more that im feeling bad for mis judging things for my son.

@DidYeAye16 I did T in the Park 30 years ago! Sleep was not on my radar back then.

We are at Rock Werchter. Hopefully the music will make up for the tiredness for my son.

There's always at least one group of dickheads going headfirst into the drugs on the first night, you just happen to be next to them. Boutique camping can be worse because it's people that don't know the score.

Hopefully they've burned themselves out, good eyemasks, excellent silicone earplugs and a Valium for emergencies. And lots of coffee. You'll get into the swing of it, the first night can be a bit of a shock.

ToffeeCrabApple · 02/07/2026 08:14

All the people off their faces on drugs behaving like this are why I dont go to festivals. Its supremely selfish, they might be having a great time but they are ruining it for others.

QuintadosMalvados · 02/07/2026 08:14

It's easy to forget the downsides of things but nevertheless yabu.

You wouldn't find me at any of these festivals precisely because it's uncomfortable, noisy and I'm going to be surrounded by drunk/drugged up people which will stop me sleeping.
Oh and I'm unlikely to keep myself as clean as I'd like to be.

It's not as if you're tucked up at home in bed and your neighbour has an all night party, is it?
You've deliberately chosen it!!

Sasha07 · 02/07/2026 08:18

My friends son and his gf had someone threaten to give them a wake up call of setting their tent on fire through night...
All because the ferals hadn't used their camping site (just abit of tarp, not even a tent there) for days and so security had reallocated their space to friends son + gf. This was in Quiet Camping at Download but I don't understand how people can use earplugs and block the world out when there's so many drugs/drunks/bellends about.

It was the two teens first festival, being told their tent will be set alight on their first night while they slept... I don't know how people cope at Festivals, clearly the good outweighs the bad but... I'd be on constant high alert, I think. Not for moi.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 02/07/2026 08:26

@Sasha07 DD and boyfriend had this scenario at Reading years ago too! Setting fire to tents rumours are rife and DD didn’t go again. BF had his boots nicked too. Who wants “fun” when this is what happens? I’m surprised any festival gets a licence to 3.30 in the morning either!

PenelopeJoanSterling · 02/07/2026 08:28

have you considered download festival ?

TheYorkshirePudding · 02/07/2026 08:45

In my teens/20s we went to loads of festivals and we wanted to see all the music, try new foods, drink plenty of alcohol and then sleep because we wanted to do it all again the next day(s)! We were usually head down by about 1am but there were always some middle aged lot who’d taken took much coke to sleep and it was fairly annoying but also embarrassing. They kept everyone up and then missed the next day. Only hope is that there is some kind of security who tells them to pipe down.

bigsoftcocks · 02/07/2026 08:49

Why would you take a teen who cannot cope with little sleep to a festival for 5 nights !?

mine wouldn’t manage and so I’d not do this until they were more robust !

I mean people do a lot of drugs and alcohol at festivals. It’s to be expected that they’ll act fucked up. Festivals are generally adult spaces unless they’re a specified family friendly more low key event.

Thecows · 02/07/2026 08:54

5 nights is a lot....

Gratitupe · 02/07/2026 08:56

Yeah, that’s how festivals are, although I’m a heavy sleeper so generally had no issue, especially if I was drunk and knackered.

twilightermummy · 02/07/2026 09:10

I remember going to Leeds fest as a teen (one of the best weekends of my life) and I literally fell asleep in the booming dance tent - I was that tired!

Jealous of those at F1. Hope I can take my lot next year 😊

Ginseng1 · 02/07/2026 09:15

This is why I stopped going to festivals at 50, used to go to one every year, a 3 nighter tho. But even in the 'quiet' camping area I just couldn't sleep between noise n the hard ground. Last one I was in bits for a week after. I miss it tho - I'd go if I had a nice camper van to go in so maybe I will again

I have friends who book a hotel near to the festival each night

A van is definitely the way forward...

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 02/07/2026 09:20

I would definitely have told that group to shut up!

I was once that obnoxious person at a campsite. Was in Australia, we'd been drinking, me and a friend were singing disney show tunes at 2am. A bloke yelled at us to shut up. It suddenly occurred to us that we were being absolute arseholes and went to bed.

crackofdoom · 02/07/2026 09:20

waterrat · 02/07/2026 07:31

hey Op Im a veteran of many festivals - been to so many different ones from glasto to smaller ones and actually this would also annoy me.

However you have to plan where you camp to avoid this. It only takes one group of drunks to ruin things - I moved my tent at Shindig festival one year because a group of 'stag's were singing loudly until about - I kid you not - 11am from 3am onwards.

Best is familiy camping or quiet camping - however family camping - kids get up at crack of dawn!

there are usually quieter spots. Pre erected tents can sometimes by noisy as people who don't usually camp may be worse behaved!

Could not agree more. I had to leave Boomtown early a couple of years ago- there were even some quieter fields further away from the centre of things where I would have been OK, but I had a free ticket and was obliged to put my stupidly big and difficult to move tent in a specific crew camping thar was on the hillside above all the main stages and sound systems, with the wind blowing from them towards us, and discovered that the official switch off time for all the stages was four am 😱

ElizaSchuyler · 02/07/2026 09:23

cuckoolodger · 02/07/2026 07:33

Currently at the formula 1 and we’re are in an accessible electric area. Was very noisy until about 2am and none of us slept particularly well but that’s to be expected as its the first night, unusual beds AND then add on the noise etc. honestly tonight will be better.

Dd camped at Zaandvoort last year and she said it was noisy (often due to the entertainment) but she did sleep and peope were quiet from a certain time onwards.

Not sure I would cope with a proper festiva!

Taggiesbeefdaube · 02/07/2026 09:25

waterrat · 02/07/2026 07:32

@Taggiesbeefdaube it's all about where you sleep. Stay in glamping/ quieter camping or off site.

I would not camp in general camping ever again. Honestly it's al ottery and you could be next to a group of teens on drugs or adult men on the piss with no manners.

I'm hoping I'm worrying over nothing. It's the big feastival so not exactly glastonbury. Its a pre pitched tent but still in the general area I think.

Honestly thinking about backing out..

lifeisgoodrightnow · 02/07/2026 09:25

Is it Lytham ? Looks such a great line up my cousins and my best mate are all there. Very jealous.

echt · 02/07/2026 09:26

And this is why I pay top dollar to camp in a shipping container. In a gated part of the festivals I go to in Australia.
I must say though that the sheer noise from the stage means you don't sleep much. Meh.

QuintadosMalvados · 02/07/2026 09:27

When you go to something like this, you've got to have a live and let live attitude.
Also, trying to relive youth is misguided as the 23-year-old you is not the same as the 50-year-old you.

I honestly think that at certain festivals people over 30 should be banned.
For their sake as much as anyone else's.

Of course the snag is that some places are so expensive only older people can afford the tickets.
If my suggestion was carried out, I'd most definitely be banned. I'm not an 18-year-old having a go at the oldies. 😁

That's OK. I don't want to be lying in a tent at 3am kicking myself for having made a stupid decision thinking I'm the same person I was at 23.
