I was in two minds about starting this thread as was a bit worried it might come over a bit ‘not like other girls’ (although am hardly a girl) but I wonder from time to time if I’m the only one who just can’t stand these things? Necklaces, earrings and bracelets just irritate the shit out of me; sunglasses rub my face and I can’t see and bags slip off your shoulder and you have to rummage through them. Obviously when my children were babies and even now the youngest is three I do need a bag with wipes, change of clothes etc but if I can get away with it I do.

I think they look really nice and sometimes even buy them but then never use them!

OK then...

Hoardasurass · 01/07/2026 08:03

You're clearly using the wrong type of bags and if you cant see through sunglasses then either you need prescription sunglasses or to not wear them at night, indoors or when overcast.
Jewelery is personal wear it if you like or not

Ineedanewsofa · 01/07/2026 08:03

I get it @hatsnstuff, I wear minimal jewellery because I don’t like the feel of it moving next to my skin (how do people run etc with necklaces flapping about?!) and I hardly wear my rings because I hate them trapping moisture under them. I love bags but can’t wear shoulder bags because they slip off and I’m constantly hoicking them back up (have always assumed my shoulders are the ‘wrong’ shape) and glasses have to be carefully chosen because I cannot cope with one that slip (but am completely blind without them!).
Hats also piss me off as my head immediately starts to sweat as soon as I go near a hat. Basically I’m not meant for accessories 😂

Loulou4022 · 01/07/2026 08:05

Yoi don’t like those things and that’s fine, I love those things and that’s fine too. You are you and I am me and we’re all different so no one is unreasonable to like or not like.

Honeyhonayboo · 01/07/2026 08:06

Nope, love necklaces and sunglasses. Bags I hate when they fall off your arm and start flapping around so I usually take the bare minimum with me anywhere.

OvernightBloats · 01/07/2026 08:08

Sunglasses are for protecting your eyes - you are foolish not to wear them in strong sunlight. Also sunglasses stop you from squinting so help prevent deep wrinkles!

hatsnstuff · 01/07/2026 08:11

I know what they are for! I might be awkward but I’m not stupid 😂

Buy bags with inner pockets for your phone and purse etc (and be regimented about always putting each back in the same one so you know where it is), and use a make-up bag inside the bag to contain any odds and ends. Then you don’t have to rummage. Sunglasses can be about finding the right fit for your face and vision. You don’t have to go mega expensive but it’s absolutely worth investing in a pair that fits to protect your eyes in the sun.

I don’t tend to wear a lot of jewellery except for special occasions as I also often find it irritating-feeling on my neck or wrists. That one is completely optional though.

hatsnstuff · 01/07/2026 08:16

But you do have to rummage - you still have to get your phone out and in and your bag slips off and annoys you.

It isn’t about cost with sunglasses. They look nice but I just don’t like the world shaded out.

Sorry, my last comment came across as stating the obvious! 😂What I was trying to say is that wearing sunglasses is non-negotiable. The older you will thank you for it!

Try on a ton of sunglasses and you will find a pair that will be comfortable to wear.

You want a satchel or handbag with a strap that goes across your body so that it doesn't fall off when you're getting stuff out or putting it back in.
Any bag that just sits on 1 shoulder without going across your body will slip from your shoulder and is easy to steal.

Honestly I never find this with bags - maybe it’s just practice being a London commuter and having to locate my card to tap through barriers whilst walking briskly at the same time, usually whilst also carrying a laptop case and a cup of coffee, I can just dip my hand into my bag without taking it off my shoulder and retrieve what I’m looking for! Sturdy straps that grip, or a crossbody bag might work better.

If sunglasses aren’t for you then I guess that’s just how it is, it’s totally your choice really. But I put them in the same category as not really liking sunscreen because it makes me feel a bit greasy - my body will thank me for both.

I’m 46 - I am a bit beyond non negotiables. Sorry, it was meant as a light hearted thread but that comment has rather grated.

I only wear sunglasses when I need sunglasses but I wouldn't like to be without them when I do.

I don't hate jewellery but I'm not good at choosing it so often don't bother, and I do find dress jewellery can irritate. Not enough to make my skin sore, but itchy.

I can't be doing with bags unless I really need one and then it will either be a back pack or a small cross body bag. Mostly I wear things with pockets or put my bank card and lip balm in my bra!

DidYeAye16 · 01/07/2026 08:29

I don't have a day to day bag I always carry. Il take a bag if I'm going on a night or day out to an event or if going actual shopping trip (rarely do as I hate shopping). Otherwise I don't use one. I have a work provided bag for laptop and things etc. If I'm just nipping to the supermarket or family/friends, out with the kids I don't bother and just throw my phone in a pocket. Also use it to pay for anything.

Sunglasses I have two prescription pairs I keep one in the car and will be wearing a pair if its sunny. They don't bother me.

Not a huge jewellery person. Only wear my wedding, engagement and eternity ring day to day. Never wear earrings as one holes closed up and I don't like them on me, I just don't think they suit me. Both my daughters always wear earrings. Il wear a necklace and bangle/bracelet if going to an event or night out. Usually need to buy new ones because by the time I am, one of my daughters have acquired the last one I bought.

You do need to protect your eyes though - cataract.

hatsnstuff · 01/07/2026 08:34

I think this is where I do worry there’s a massive gulf between me and others as people say things like oh me too and I only wear my wedding ring where I can’t even hear that, or only have a cross body bag which I also find really irritating

I did try to wear sunglasses yesterday but they really bother me - I don’t like seeing everything darker and they rub under my eyes and ears. I must be very sensory!

OP posts:
frecklejuice · 01/07/2026 16:06

This is me! I don’t wear any jewellery except my wedding and engagement rings, I can’t stand earrings or bracelets or necklaces because I’m just really aware of them on me and they drive me mad. Sunglasses I can’t stand earrings tolerate but I also need them as my eyes are so sensitive to the sun! Bags I’ll only wear a cross the body bag because holding them on my shoulder is annoying.

When it’s hot I don’t even wear my wedding and engagement rings because they irritate me and I’m really aware of them!

Its not just you!

BuildbyNumbere · 01/07/2026 16:38

Point of this thread? If you don’t like it, don’t wear it … not sure what you are arguing with people over?!?
Yes, I wear sunglasses as I don’t want to damage my eyes, carry a bag so I don’t lose my things and wear some jewellery … you don’t, so what?

thingisimhere · 01/07/2026 17:52

YANBU. I do not love the feeling of jewellery and only wear my thin wedding band. I find wearing glasses incredibly uncomfortable and use contacts, never sun glasses, they make me dizzy. I do carry a small Longchamp backpack but it's hardly fashionista territory. I don't wear a watch nor earring, scarf, hat, ever.

thingisimhere · 01/07/2026 17:53

And I dislike gloves.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 01/07/2026 18:06

Sunglasses are worth getting used to, they're not just a fashion accessory. Maybe you've tried ones that are too small/big if they're hurting your face.

Bags can obviously be very useful. I couldn't securely carry all the things I need in pockets. I don't like big, one-section bags because I hate digging through to find things. So I use bags with sections.

Jewellery - not useful at all, so if you hate the way it looks and feels then I wouldn't bother trying to convince myself otherwise.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 01/07/2026 20:17

Sunglases I have no issues with but then I wear glasses anyway so I’m used to it. I’m not a big fan of jewellery generally and rarely take a bag out. I actively seek trousers with pockets deep enough for my phone and keys so I don’t need to take a bag (I don’t wear skirts or dresses much either!)

Point of the thread is wondering if it’s just me. And I think it might be as a lot of people reply saying oh me too … I only wear … I can’t even stand one ring or whatever.

My mum never went out without her handbag, always wore a necklace and rings and a small watch. She also had glasses!

oh and I can’t stand hair bobbles either.

Polarising sunglasses preserve more of the colour in the world.

Look at Mia Tui bags, pocket for phones, light coloured interiors so no digging around in a black inner. Accessible back zips for tickets/purse etc. As others have said, small cross body bags are easier to dig into.

I'd look at ADHD indicators in mid life women, you may feel more at home!
