Why are we just letting this continue? Charging MacMillan and other charities for office space. FFS.

Because they're parasites?

Because they're parasites?

quite, but some of where they’re getting money from is morally horrific! Charging the police and ambulance service to use some garages? How dare they bloody pretend to sympathise with ordinary people.

I can't believe we still have a royal family. The lot of them disgust me.

SamAylward · 30/06/2026 19:11

The royal family does NOT charge them rent.

It is the Crown Estate that is charging these rents NOT the royal family. They are two totally separate things and ALL profits from the Crown Estate go to the Treasury not to the royal family.

Go and google "The Crown Estate" for a full explanation.

Your post is based on totally false information.

Sadly you're wasting your time. The misunderstanding of how the royal family is funded is huge, clearly evidenced in this thread in every single post except yours. The modern royal family are doing their best to be open and transparent to stop the bullshit flying around but the anti-royalists are so blind to the truth, they dont even bother to check (or care) whether the crap they are posting about is true.

I always wonder how many of the posts on threads like these are by real people who live in the UK or elsewhere in the Commonwealth, and how many are Russian bots.

This. I think you need to do a bit more reading OP.

Also how many charities do you know that get free rent? Most will be paying market rates for their offices and shops....

SweepSqueaks · 30/06/2026 19:44

YANBU to question something that you don’t understand.

Darragon · 30/06/2026 19:44

Because when organisations and people use a building they don’t own, they pay rent to the owner. HTH.

BTW are you as faux outraged at all the landlords charging rent to all sorts of charities up and down the country? Thought not. It’s just the RF that gets this shite flung at them nonstop.

The Duchy of Cornwall profits go directly to Prince William though as far as I know. His income frim this was around £21 Million in 25/26. Part of that includes rent from schools and other government organisations. In the last week the Prince has given up his income he was getting from Dartmoor Prison which is empty due to safety issues with the building. The government had agreed a 37million pound lease over 25 years in 2022. Instead the 1.5million pound rent will go to good causes. The Ducy is also selling off a percentage of its land with again the profits being used for good causes. I believe the RF are aware that their huge wealth is being scrutinised.

Bunnyfuller1 · 30/06/2026 21:32

Publishing tax figures are meaningless unless balanced with what the original income was, and what 3xactly from that income hasn’t been counted for tax purposes.

Landlords aren’t royals spouting platitudes about charity whilst still charging the rent. They already have enough income to survive without having to work for hundreds of years to come. And not all duchy monies go into the treasury.

The post is from FB but is actually factual, it’s not some random, it’s a chap working with the Green Party.

Oh fuck me, the Green Party. Well in that case it must be right 😂

Anyway if you own something, you can rent it out HTH

JohnofWessex · 30/06/2026 21:37

There are two points worth making

Firstly a lot of the land held by the Crown is in trusts and as such they are obliged to get the best return

Secondly some of the land is leased under very favourable arrangements but because it is leased the tenant can control what is happening so for example the RNLI can control what goes on under its slipways

sittingonabeach · 30/06/2026 21:40

@mrshoho Expenses of the Duchy have to be covered by income. Capital income has to be reinvested into the Duchy.

I find it odd that people don’t think rent should be charged

OnTheBoardwalk · 30/06/2026 21:44

This OP makes my head hurt…

why should all charities, all prisons and all NHS sites get free rent from everyone in the UK who own the land?

Yeah but they get tax concessions though

I assume youre being sarcastic in equating truth with working for the green party 😂

Do you believe everything you hear on facebook, or just stuff from chaps working for the green party.

topcat2014 · 30/06/2026 21:54

You know that charities up and down the country don't get given offices and shops for free don't you?

PenelopeJoanSterling · 30/06/2026 22:00

@Bunnyfuller1 op its bollocks,

Bunnyfuller1 · 30/06/2026 22:03

Yetanotherone12 · 30/06/2026 22:08

Does that apply to anyone renting land or buildings to public services? Or is it just the crown estate you don’t feel should be paid?

Many, many buildings the police, nhs etc use now are PFI. We pay rent on all of those.

it’s the government selling buildings and renting from the private sector that’s the issue, not the crown.
